Altar Evo reminds me of old school story driven games like Deadly Premonition and Shenmue. It’s a game heavily focused on story, with the developer's personal quirks and personality woven into the experience. That gives it a unique charm that a lot of modern games are missing. It feels like one of those strange cult classic games from the PS2 era where the atmosphere, characters, and awkwardness somehow make the experience even more memorable. It plays well and, so far, has been a fun linear experience. I recommend it if you’re looking for a good story game to play!
The Alter Evo experience feels like performing an occult ritual with a bunch of friends as a joke just for fun and realizing halfway through that it was not a joke. You can also describe it as an artistic equivalent of getting sprayed with a flamethrower directly into your face. The first thing that manifests is the tone. It's a gestalt of surreal weirdness, humor, horror and schizo vibes. It's serious, it's unserious, and it never stops. Never mind stopping, it doesn't even slow down. There are a lot of plotlines and allegories. Its story flows smoothly but is actually very complex and cryptic. It will take me a while to even partially decipher what it all means. It's like three novels of three different genres stacked on top of each other worth of mystery. But the themes are not that cryptic. I think the themes land and shine through just fine. The game is good at communicating the framing and the core emotions of its messages. I found myself exactly where the game wanted me to be, time and time again. The action is solid enough. And I saw it do at least a couple of very clever things as a horror game that I haven't really seen any other horror game do. But the themes, the raw human emotion, the raw artistry. Unforgettable. How can something be this sweet and this dark at the same time?
What it lacks in polish and finesse, it compensates in creativity and authenticity. It's a game someone made regardless of skills and means, not to make "easy money", but because they wanted to make a cool game and nothing managed to stop them from shipping it. It's amateurish in every way you can think of, yet has plenty of charm and something hard to put a finger on that you don't feel in games all that often these days.
If I had to describe this game in two words they'd be "fever dream". Seriously, this felt like a surreal nightmare for its entire run, and I mean that in the best way possible. It feels like it was written by a fifteen year old who woke up the day after getting high on cough syrup and then binging Silent Hill 1, Half-Life 2, and then got dumped by his girlfriend. Does the story make any sense? No, not in the slightest. Is it interesting as all hell? Yes, just don't expect any explanations for the weird stuff. The actual gameplay is janky and, frankly, kinda boring. Stiff third person shooting and tedious back and forth driving over an empty map. But it all feeds into the surreal feeling of the game. It's mercifully short, probably not even three hours. If you're in the mood for a game that genuinely leaves you asking "What the ♥♥♥♥ just happened?" pick it up.
Very interesting game and story, although ending left me questioning what happened :D story line and buildup was nice, i really liked variety of voiceovers. There is also tinny lag in game, at start but that did not interrupted me to enjoy game :) it takes around 5h to beat game

I have a habit of seeking things out, merely out of morbid curiosity. This game shattered any and all expectations. Honestly this might be my game of the year for 2026 at this point. It's sincere, it's surreal, it has like a top 10 video game car I've ever driven. The entire game feels like a fever dream in the best possible way. Do not go in expecting something particularly scary. But know that you are about to experience probably the best successor to Deadly Premonition I could've imagined. I will likely buy copies for multiple friends. I need people to see this. I need people to understand what I mean. I read every memo. I watched every dream. I do not know what happened. I could not tell you what happened. In terms of gameplay, shooting was solid, driving was incredible, and the conversations with other characters were perfect. There were mini-games. A lot of them. But they broke up gameplay well and added to the general surrealism. The audio design was really, REALLY good. One of the enemies in particular had a very good death sound effect. Honestly might've been the most disconcerting thing in the game. 10/10, I look forward to seeing what this guy makes in the future. PLEASE MAKE MORE GAMES!!!!!!
