this is not Obsidian's magnum opus.
If you can get by how bugy this game is & if you don't handicap yourself like i did with skills, it's a fun game, I did complete Pacifist & least detection run & Menace Run aswell, You need to mod the game to make it more enjoyable, The branching choices are pretty good & culminate on final mission It's made by obsidian so it has 4 dialogue options, Suave/Agressive/Professional/Special, & you can piss off factions & individuals & the consequences play out well, On Vanilla i don't reccomend this jankbugfest game, The most fun fact is characters in the game commenting on how you did your job, oh you didn't kill anyone & stayed undetected, Characters Congrats you vs Your a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ reckless menace of a murderer dialogue, I reccomend alpha protocol revived on nexus mods & you can find all the fixes in steam guides if you need them. 5/10 game.
The game is Ok. It aged fine besides few quirks with controls.
Little disclaimer, an ex family member of mine (Travis Stout) was on the creative design team and was also a writer for this game, though I have not spoken with him in many years and really has no effect on my enjoyment of the game. I think Alpha Protocol really rises above the jank to be something wholly unique and special, but it definitely takes a little perseverance for it to pick up. The gameplay is simply put, pretty bad, but in a way can be a lot of fun interacting with it's more broken elements. The AI is mostly awful and reacts like shooting gallery targets most of the game, the animations and cover system are wildly buggy and can result in some crazy animations, and the PC port, even with the updated 2024 GOG patch (if you have the Steam version, look up how to install it, it cuts the jank by at least half), is super rough. You will basically NEED a gamepad for this, mouse and keyboard is basically unplayable. There are also a few minor graphical glitches. My biggest issue was that there is no functional support for 4k or ultrawide, so HUD elements are messed up unless running on 1080p, despite resolutions higher than that being available. There is also no anti-aliasing, and attempting to inject it through your graphics card panel will result in some really odd texture issues, so the game will be abundant with jaggies on a large, high resolution screen. Some technical issues are to be expected with 15 year old PC games, but it is clear most of these are the result of a poor PC port, especially the controls. Beyond that though, the scope of ridiculously overpowered abilities you have, especially in the stealth and pistol trees can make this game a fun power trip simulator. You are basically Jason Bourne/ John Wick/ 007, nobody is a match for you. The story is also pretty good, super relevant to this day and hyper critical of capitalism and war profiteering. The way information is slowly revealed to you (or not, if you are a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ spy) is super satisfying, and deciding who is worthy of your trust and adding onto your entourage and who is an enemy, in a world full of deception is the best part of the game bar none. I honestly can't think of another game where every single dialogue option has such an immediate and dynamic impact on not only the story but the gameplay. It's such a great mechanic and it's a shame there isn't really any other games that utilize this system. I seen a lot of comparisons to Mass Effect, calling Alpha Protocol "Diet Mass Effect" and I think that is totally backwards. Mass Effect definitely has superior gameplay, visuals and dialogue writing, but as far as choices being impactful to the game, Mass Effect only ever has a few that actually matter to the long term plot of the game, but almost every dialogue choice in Alpha Protocol leaves a lasting impact to both the story and the game, so if that is the through-line of the comparison, I would say Mass Effect is the diet beverage in this example. The music and variety of locales you visit is great as well, I do think the romance could have been handled a little better, you don't really have the option of developing an in-depth relationship with any one character, rather either being a playboy or not at all, but the romance is also so insignificant to the core story it's hard to knock it, and is fittingly cliche of the spy thriller genre regardless. I admit this game took me a few tries to stick over the years. I had gone through the introductory sequence 2 or 3 times in the past, feeling like Alpha Protocol SHOULD be a game that I would love based off everything I knew about it, but the jank deterred me. The jank is quickly remedied with the purchase of a silencer and a level up or 2 to give you some equipment to work with, but it is a rough introduction none-the-less. Also, the ending totally nails it. Satisfying as hell, leaves as many loose ends open as you left open, and ties up the loose ends you decided to tie up. If you decide to go the route of vengeance... yeah.... it's satisfying. How's the saying go? "Prick had it coming"? When you take Metal Gear Solid out of the equation (which I think only loosely qualifies anyways), this is THE spy thriller videogame. It's not just an aesthetic, it's the DNA of Alpha Protocol, and if that seems like something up your alley way you should definitely give it a try, it's worth sticking with to the end.
Worth playing in 2026, however be aware of the bad/outdated mechanics. ;)
simply the greatest 6/10 ever made, desperately want Obsidian and Sega to give us more in this game world
One of the extremely few games I bothered to replay
If you were looking for a game where you got to sneak around and act like James Bond, forget it. This is possibly the single worst stealth game of all time. You get spotted without any modicum of warning in 0 seconds flat, no Metal Gear Solid "Is somebody over there?" no Dishonored detection meter, just "oh ♥♥♥♥, there's a guy there, let's all shoot at him right now." And then you're thrust into combat. Where guns don't work until you get into melee range. They are so horrifically innacurate it boggles my mind. This game strongly advertises itself as a sweet ass stealth game of military espionage and RPG mechanics, but instead you get no stealth, ♥♥♥♥♥♥ action, and honestly, half-decent RPG mechanics, but again, they're bogged down by everything else being abysmal ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
Okay so, this game has some jank you could expect from a 2010 game i completed the game on the hardest difficulty as recruit loading back a save each time ive been spotted or checking diffrent dialogue options so if you just not do that you could complete the game much faster than me but boy did i die a lot but i made it and here is what i think. Stealth. not always possible some bosses even immune to stealth attacks but it will get you past throughout most of the levels without issue. there is some jank in it like there is no warning before a enemy spots you and trust me they pull a gun on you faster than a wild west gunslinger. sure there is a perk to give you invisibility for a few seconds basicly a free pass to throat slam a dude or two if you have it on mastery hell i managed to knock out four at one moment during that brief invisibility. Gunfights. you will be in one either you like it or not so you should spec in a weapons skill it will save you a headache, i chose assault rifles becouse ammo is everywhere and you can sling it reasonably. i made the mistakes of specing in a gun skill in like the middle of the game and it was a struggle but after getting four levels into the rifles gunfights actually became somewhat fun. the bad of gunfights. if you are face to face with an enemy and they have a gun you will die well at least i did, 95% of the time they put two in my skull and that's it. lack of cover is unforgiving during boss battles especially because all of them use guns chambered in ♥♥♥♥ you and and they installed the latest aimbot, so stay in cover and when you have to move ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ RUN because a butterfly knife wielding cocaine addict will rock your ♥♥♥♥ if you let him get close (just my point of view i was hopless in hand to hand the entire game). So yeah it's rough so i took every chance for stealth i could even after putting skill points into gun skills, more of a gameplay choice by that point becouse npc's were complimenting me on how good i was at it Story! I fairly enjoyed it, even when i didnt understand what they were yapping about and there surely are some memorable characters like a certain cocaine addict. As one could expect it there is a lot of spy ♥♥♥♥ in the game plenty of twists. not much to elaborate here cant really do that without talking about the game story so yuh Final thoughts! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Remake this game. Sega! you just made yakuza kiwami 3, take a break and get obsidian to remake this game with you, not like they made any good games recently no i did not play outerworlds 2 im still recovering from 1, yeesh. Okay so i give the game 7/10 yup that's it. TLDR. GAME NOT BAD. BARK FOR MINA. THANK GOD FOR NAPALM.
