Schizophrenia-inducing. You cannot solve this. Good way to start wikipedia holes on esoteric stuff though. I don't even 100% want to put this down, because it has made me learn some sort of interesting fundamentals about alchemy, history, and other things like that, but it's extremely lateral, esoteric, and unspecific. I do not recommend it. If you do play it, try to see if you can get a friend who has a lot of puzzle experience. Do not ask LLMs for help because they are really very bad at this.
Alchemia is difficult to classify as a game, because, well, it's not really. At least, not a video game. This software shows you a book that you can flip through, each page has a number of difficult cryptographic puzzles that you can solve. All of which could have been satisfied by putting the pages up on the web... so... why is someone trying to charge cash money for this on Steam? That's not okay... it's a disservice to actual game developers. Regardless of how curious the puzzles themselves might be... we have to put this in the context of the video game store it's being sold on, as a video game, when that's not what this is. For starters, this has no gameplay loops and no real plot or anything, you just solve the puzzles and then you get an achievement (and you can just google it if you want the cheevo). Does this exist only to give people an achievement, then? Why isn't this just a webpage? Alchemia didn't appeal much to the people who own a copy of the game, either. It has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the game didn't really capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for finishing the puzzles, trivial to get (just google), but less than 17 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the game. Hardly a success story, gamers just weren't all that interested in the game. Alchemia is relatively cheap at $2 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. If you're interested in cryptography and cipher style puzzles, there's hundreds of free ones on the web. Taking them and trying to make them into a paid product on Steam isn't okay.

Alchemia, developed and published by Matthew Brown, is less a conventional game and more an intellectual challenge presented in interactive form. It deliberately strips away most of the familiar structures associated with video games—clear objectives, guided progression, and feedback systems—and replaces them with a single, dense artifact: a mysterious alchemical manuscript filled with symbols, diagrams, and cryptic clues. The experience asks players not just to play, but to interpret, research, and uncover meaning in ways that extend far beyond the boundaries of the screen. At its core, Alchemia offers no traditional gameplay loop. There are no levels to complete, no visible progression systems, and no tutorial to ease players into its logic. Instead, it presents a collection of pages inspired by historical alchemical texts, each filled with encoded information that must be deciphered. The player’s role becomes that of an investigator, piecing together connections between symbols, language, and external knowledge. Progress is entirely self-driven, and success is measured not by in-game rewards but by moments of understanding—those rare instances when a pattern clicks or a hidden meaning reveals itself. What makes the experience particularly unique is its reliance on knowledge outside the game itself. Many of the puzzles cannot be solved through observation alone and instead require players to engage in research, drawing from history, cryptography, and esoteric symbolism. This transforms the act of play into a hybrid of puzzle-solving and academic inquiry. It is not unusual for players to take notes, experiment with theories, or consult external resources in order to make progress. In this sense, the game extends into the real world, blurring the line between digital interaction and intellectual exploration. This design philosophy is both the game’s greatest strength and its most significant barrier. For players who enjoy deep, open-ended challenges, Alchemia offers a rare kind of satisfaction. Solving even a small part of its mystery can feel genuinely rewarding, as it requires persistence, creativity, and a willingness to think beyond conventional patterns. However, the lack of guidance or feedback can also make the experience feel opaque and directionless. Without any indication of whether one is on the right track, it is easy to become stuck or uncertain, which may lead to frustration rather than engagement. Visually, the game is intentionally minimalistic. The manuscript is presented clearly, with an emphasis on readability and detail rather than visual flair. There are no elaborate animations or environments—just the pages themselves, filled with carefully designed symbols and text. This simplicity reinforces the game’s focus, ensuring that attention remains on the puzzles rather than on presentation. At the same time, it contributes to a sense of austerity, making the experience feel more like studying an artifact than playing a traditional game. The absence of a strong audio component further emphasizes this tone. With little to no music or sound design to guide the player’s emotions, the experience becomes quiet and introspective. This can enhance concentration, allowing players to fully immerse themselves in the process of deciphering clues, but it can also make the experience feel isolated and stark, particularly during extended sessions. One of the most striking aspects of Alchemia is how it redefines player engagement. Instead of offering constant feedback or incremental rewards, it demands patience and self-motivation. The game does not adapt to the player; the player must adapt to the game. This creates a sense of authenticity in its challenge, as solutions feel genuinely earned rather than guided. However, it also means that the experience is highly dependent on the player’s mindset—those willing to embrace uncertainty and persistence will find value, while others may find it inaccessible. Ultimately, Alchemia stands as a bold experiment in puzzle design, one that challenges traditional expectations of what a game should be. It removes structure and replaces it with ambiguity, asking players to find their own path through a dense and often inscrutable web of clues. While this approach limits its appeal to a niche audience, it also gives the game a distinct identity that sets it apart from more conventional titles. In the end, Alchemia is best appreciated as an intellectual exercise rather than a traditional game. It offers a deeply engaging experience for those who enjoy cryptic challenges and are willing to invest time and effort into understanding its systems. For that audience, it provides a unique and memorable journey—one defined not by progression or completion, but by the process of discovery itself. Rating: 8/10

Trudno nazwać to grą i rozgrywką, to raczej pewne doświadczenie i próba stworzenia złudzenia obcowania z TAJEMNICĄ i ZAKAZANĄ WIEDZĄ. Nie ukrywam, nie porwało mnie to za bardzo, choć lubię gry oparte na poszukiwaniu informacji (np. Ahnayro czy The Black Watchman). Tu jednak za mało było interakcji, a za dużo wszystkiego innego... Ale biorąc pod uwagę cenę - warto spróbować...
