bestest chillest game ever
One of the best games ever made into which I poured countess hours on the CD-ROM. This playthrough I conquered the Valley of Wonders via the Cult of Storms. I was perhaps more in awe of how well this game was made after seeing it hold up shocking well 25+ years later. As someone who revisits a lot of older games, the UI and control system surpasses any game of its era (even rivaling some modern ones!). Combine that with the artwork, storyline, and immense attention to detail -- this game still holds up. Cons: Had some crashing issues that I never experienced with the original two and a half decades ago, but were resolved simply by restarting the game or, on very rare occasions, restarting the computer. I didn't want to download any of the modern patches/fixes as to avoid any risk of malware. [Additionally (with no affect on gameplay), introductory movie wouldn't play. Pulled it up on YouTube for a refresher.]
Getting it to run is slightly tricky, requiring you to mess around in the file directory for a few minutes and download a small file off github, however once you get the game running you will find it is absolutely dripping with charm. The art style is a classic example of retro fantasy aesthetics and it has a number of small touches that give the game an air of goofiness. The menu in-game has a dragon that reacts to your cursor as it navigates the settings, the in-game models are delightful little guys, Julia has nipples on her chest armour, and the goblins have suicide bombers. Gameplay wise the game feels a little on the insane side. You can flood tiles, summon impassable mountains around enemy armies, create unstoppable armies of flying boats, do chemical warfare, the list goes on. It rewards creativity and allows the player to live out their dreams of being a crazy powerful wizard. Coupled with a fun soundtrack and again, that retro fantasy art style, and you'll feel like you're playing out a rule of cool D&D campaign. Speaking of the campaign, it's surprisingly in depth. You are faced with a series of choices that will affect the outcome of the game, making it feel like a bit of a grand strategy. I haven't played enough to know to what extent the choices affect the course of the story but an example would be how when you start a new level you can bring over equipment, resources, and units. OR, picking one mission over the other will affect what races you have access too. Overall I'd recommend the game. It's not going to break your wallet and it's charming enough to get some fun time out of it.
fun but dated
By God what a game. I know the later entries get even better, but what's here is still incredible. The mechanics are quite simple, they're not hard to understand, but the way they interact with each other is what really makes the experience. All the races feel distinct from each other and have their own style. A lot of them parallel each other, like the Highmen and Undead, the High and Dark Elves, Frostlings and Azracs, Goblins and Dwarves. I had a lot of fun trying all of them out, seeing the differences in strategy the subtle variations between the units bring. Ultimately, my favourite ones ended up being Highmen and Orcs. And the campaign does a great job introducing you to them and teaching, and later on testing you on, how to play the game. Some of the later maps in the campaign are no joke and had me sweating bullets. They thoroughly tested my understanding of the game and felt great to beat. The story, while told mostly through text, surprised me with how good it was. The text was well written and really got across the emotions and mood it wanted it to. Be it the cheerful celebration with the halflings, the resentment your character feels towards their faction leaders, if certain choices were taken, the suffering from horrendous nightmares, or the very touching ending for the good path. If i had to say something negative, that would be the stupidity of the AI. I played on Emperor exclusively, once i got good enough at the game to be able to, and even still the AI didn't push me to the extent i feel it could have, were it smarter. It does way too many odd and illogical strategical and tactical choices that i sometimes find hard not to laugh at. It's not particularly bright and feels very unfocused. Though this is on Normal behaviour settings, from the little i tested, depending on what you want from it, it can actually be a bit better at times, but not by much. The other problem i have is, paradoxically, the small number of scenarios to choose from. The ones that are included are really good and most of my playtime was squeezed from them, but there's not much. Though this little issue can be resolved by downloading new scenarios online. Overall, a fantastic game, one i thoroughly recommend. It's hard to believe that the subsequent games are even better, when the bar for quality is set so high. Thanks for reading this review, i hope you have a great day
It says my time is 58 minutes but I had this thing on cd back when you had to actually go to a store to purchase a video game. Probably logged over 100 hours in it. This company made some of the best turn based strategy games ever made right up until Paradox bought them and turned them into a DLC farm. You probably don't want to get the steam copy though, the last time I tried to get this thing to work on a new pc I had to use the GOG verison.
Absolute classic - keep coming back to this
