Casual playthrough ~6 hours Played on a Steamdeck @MatureContent
Comparing this to the Ben 10 game from 2017, this feels more ambitious in what it tries to accomplish and while it does do better in terms of story telling and fighting, it still feels pretty empty and like it is only partially finished. The story is about Ben and his family (his sister and grandpa) on a vacation trip to some stereotypical european city that looks like somewhere in the middle of Austria or Switzerland. Their vacation is interrupted by an evil magician that opens up some strange crystal gateways that summon monsters. At the same time this evil magician also attacks Bens omnitrix which causes it to lose the monsters within it. You as Ben, will have to find the missing monsters to put them back into the omnitrix and destroy all the crystal portal things to save the town. The level design in terms of fun, is definitely better than that other Ben 10 game. It is open world with 3 different regions, the forest, the city and the mountain. To traverse the map you have access to a Ben 10 scooter which you can cruise around on. I also like the fighting in this game better than the other game, the combos are just cooler and the fighting feels more fluid, though still very simple. There are also different collectables like records, trinkets and some weird concert mini levels scattered across the map. As you play you also get these power up / skill point items which you can use to increase your toughness, power and luck. Toughness is your health, power your strength and luck is a mix of a better chance of doing crit damage and a better chance to get more loot, which in this game is just more power ups to level up with. Each passive effect can be leveled up 20 times. Where is game drops it is with the very simple and slightly boring map, where most areas feel empty and oversimplified. Most of the map is empty with a few scattered rocks, trees and bushes that are all just copies of each other. The few npcs in the town also just stand there looking like inanimate objects. The whole map and visual design just lack personality. While I like this game more than the other Ben 10 game here on Steam, the 30 bucks they ask for it, is still way too much for a game that takes like 6 hours to complete and is as simple as this is. So, I won't recommend it based on that alone. However, if you can get one of the cheap keys, then why not try it out. ————————————————————————————— Help me out by following my Curator, I’d really appreciate it!!
this is just fetch quests with a side of story
I don't recommend it unless it's 90% off due to the numerous bugs and lack of polish. Missions are short and repetitive, rewards are genuinely pointless (e.g. 25 gold for a mission when I could have just killed 2-3 enemies instead). They re-used the same boss fight 3 times and there's hardly any enemy variety. The mini-map just doesn't work, and and some collectibles aren't shown on the world map (vinyl in city park, trinket on eastern bridge) even after buying the upgrades to reveal them. Sometimes the quest markers don't update, and I had an issue where a gate button wouldn't trigger to progress the main story until I managed to activate it through a wall. Also there's a collectible on a boat which you use the grapple to access, but then there's no way to grapple back onto land so you're just stuck forever... Like everything else published by Outright Games, it's a mess.
This game reminds me of a ps2 platformer. Fun gameplay, good controls and switching between heroes is fun. Graphics are fine for what they are. Very casual game with a couple of flaws. The world is simply too big. PITA going from place to place and having to go to the camper to fast travel was incovenient. I think most of my time playing was just spent traveling the map. Scooter simulator- one step above a walking simulator. The other thing was I lost some progress cause NPCs wouldn't spawn for a quest. I don't think it's unreasonable to say that this bug should have been fixed by now. Otherwise, exploring the world is kinda fun, just wish the world was smaller or there was more stuff to do. The missions also get repetitive after awhile. Overall, I'd give this game a 7/10. Pretty short game so get it on sale.
actually funny how terrible this is. also, don’t bother making a ben 10 if you’re not going to include at least 10 aliens
