About
ON A GOOD DAY, ONLY 2.5 MILLION PEOPLE WILL DIE.
As vast alien mining cities suck the power and minerals from every major metropolis on Earth simultaneously, time is of the essence as millions of civilians are expiring by the second.
Using your stealth parachute and the now infamous 'Zooming' head-mounted sniper-weapon, your task is to slip in undetected from the sky, seek out and remove the alien leader by any means.
MDK gives you awesome super smooth 3D gameplay.
Plus, with the most advanced weapons ever created in a video game, you can 'take' out an alien's eye from five miles away or just neatly carve your name in his forehead!
Pros:
✅ The compatibility on modern PC's, on Windows 11, is surprisingly good. I played the 3DFX version, which runs smoothly and looks great even today, though it’s possible the original version could cause some problems. ✅ The story is almost non-existent, though there are a few logical plot points that give you enough understanding what and why are you doing the things you do in game. ✅ The soundtrack is quite nice and fits the action perfectly. It could be clearer, but considering the game’s age, it still holds up surprisingly well. ✅ The graphics are nice for their time, featuring stylish environments and creative level design that give the game a unique personality even today.
Cons:
❌ Short game. I finished it in under three hours. ❌ The price is too high for a game released in 1997. ❌ The controls are bad, but with some customization, they can become decent enough.
MDK is the sort thing that isn’t well captured in words. One can describe it in such terms as would make it appear entertaining if ultimately unexceptional. Perhaps the best description would be something like 3D Contra, with Contra’s mixture of platforming and non-stop movement and action, only without the variety of power-ups and such. Instead you get a variety of expendable items and, as perhaps more befits its fully 3D environment, some sort of sniper riffle with several types of ammo. There’s even the constant spawning of enemies at some points, and some stages end with imposing bosses. The game is far easier than Contra would be, indeed it is hardly challenging by any stretch of imagination. It is also over all too soon. What this can hardly communicate to you is just how good it feels to actually play this thing, how satisfying every aspect of it is. How well designed and paced each stage is, how distinct they are, how there is almost always something new happening in every portion of every stage. And what is downright impossible to communicate is the game’s art direction and its overall feel. This is something else, alright, and it really could’ve been made only at this point in time, by this particular developer. Think some sort of collaboration between Looney Tunes and H.R. Giger. Or a particularly gonzo comic from the pages of Heavy Metal/Metal Hurlant magazine. This doesn’t help much, of course, but really nothing can. One thing that ought be mentioned is that this Steam release is as lazy as one expects from Interplay’s animated corpse. There is however an all-in-one patch for the steam version that includes both all that is needed for running it on modern PCs and all the inexplicably excised content, so there’s that.
Not sure why this has so many positive reviews, this port is straight up garbage. It's almost impossible to get this game working properly without experiencing bugs and crashes. The "fan patch" doesn't even work. Great game, Horrible port.
If it wasn't for nostalgia clouding my judgement and making me buy this in 2023 with the hopes of it working as intended at launch i would have stayed away from this game. While i had fun in the 2000s with this, today is not enjoyable at all to play.
The game is incredible, both the CD version (the original one that I played) and the Steam version works very well! I'll be completing the game soon! 9.5/10 Edit: I completed the game the last stages are very difficult to the extreme... and I haven't died yet! Detail: After completing the final boss, there will be a "surprise" and there is no way to skip it, just be patient and watch! but it was cool! I feel satisfied! I'll go to MDK 2 someday!
Steam version is broken and even with the glide patch the game constantly crashes. I cannot pass the corridor on the fifth level. So disappointing.
8/10 - I played it on the Playstation 1 back then and I still really like it. It's a shame that the series never got so much attention and only got one sequel. The controls are a bit odd today, but you quickly get used to it. You can remap all the buttons in the game - modern WASD controls were no problem. You should definitely download and install the patch first. It will restore the video at the end of the game: Unfortunately, I only realized after playing the game that you can also change the resolution. Simply start nglide_config.exe in the game folder and select the Glide version when starting the game. Here is a short guide:
Back in the days when most shooters were all shades of brown and the mouse was a weird device, this was a cool game with unique enemy designs, levels and almost James Bond-esque music. Today we have an aged game that you can play after reading the guides, installing patches and breaking your fingers to satisfy the controls. Even considering the nominal price, too little effort has been put into making the game playable by the current owner of the game. Looks like trying to milk a dead cow... game itself is good, state of game is disasterous
As of 2024, this game comes with the nGlide software attached which allows it to run properly on modern systems. Therefore, it is now fully playable. It runs letterboxed with lower-res textures (256x256). There are fixes online which allow to run it in close to widescreen ratio and higher-res textures (512x512), though it is little bit of a hassle to install them and personally I had no luck in making them work. Outside of dated graphics (obviously), little bit dated controls (which are editable, however), and missing ending cutscene (which can be modded in), the game shows its great strengths even after almost three decades since it was made. The gameplay is fun and varied, the atmosphere is gloomy and scary, but at the same time it also has hilarious and comedic parts. Designs and overall artistic direction on some of the levels are beyond genius and unmatched by any other action/shooter game ever made. Music also plays a big role in building the atmosphere. If there ever was a hot candidate for a remaster, it is this almost forgotten gem.
