A classic fantasy strategy gem that still holds up Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic is one of those fantasy strategy games that feels surprisingly alive even today. It blends turn-based empire building with detailed tactical battles on hex maps, and when it all comes together it scratches that “just one more turn” itch perfectly. The real strength is variety. There are many races, units and spells, and each faction plays differently enough that trying out new builds and combinations actually feels fresh. The world itself has a great atmosphere too: classic high fantasy without being overly serious, helped by solid music and charming old-school visuals. Tactical battles are where the game shines. Positioning, terrain, flying units, ranged attacks and spell support all matter, and even small skirmishes can be interesting instead of just auto-resolve filler. Add in the map and scenario editor and there’s a lot of replay value if you enjoy tinkering. Of course, it shows its age. The interface is clunky by modern standards, information is not always surfaced clearly, and the pacing can drag a bit on larger maps. The AI is decent but not brilliant, and some balance quirks mean a few spells and unit types stand out as clearly stronger than others. Still, despite those rough edges, Shadow Magic remains a very enjoyable fantasy strategy title. If you like turn-based tactics, building up cities and armies, and experimenting with different magical playstyles, this is a classic that comfortably earns a solid “really good but not perfect” verdict.
This game has a state-of-the-art magic system. You can flood the world or enchant your heroes, summon angels, dragons or frogs if you want. You can feel your power changing the world, you can burn armies alive or surprise your enemies with a tornado. You can dig for treasure in the underworld or travel through the shadows. Great replayability, cute graphics, great music, an unbeatable idea and complexity. I still play this masterpiece from time to time because with the scenario editor you can create games that tell stories of swords and magic of the old days. Just the way I like it. I highly recommend this game (no other version of Age of Wonders has such... wonders).
Oldie but goodie, highly suggested!
Came back to play this after playing the newer Age of Wonders games. I miss the wizard kings, wizard towers and the campaigne.
