If you are a fan of the Early Modern era (cannons, massive forts, muskets, naval broadsides, etc.) then I highly recommend this iteration of AoE. The Definitive Edition really makes the game shine with updated graphics. The nations are great, the maps are big and varied, and there is a load of customizability with the Home City decks. The huge, late-game battles can get absolutely crazy. They are wildly intense, chaotic in the best way possible, and pulling off a win feels unbelievably satisfying. However, there are some issues. The game occasionally goes out of sync, suffers from memory leaks (multiple lag spikes), and the overall networking side clearly isn't great. It works, but it can be a bit (sometimes a lot tbh) frustrating. In multiplayer, it is sometimes quite hard to find a game suited to your skill level. You'll either get kicked from lobbies (because your nation level is too high) or get absolutely destroyed by veterans. That balanced "in-between" experience is rare. Also, players sometimes decide to quit or go AFK in the middle of a long NR60 match, which is extremely frustrating.
Played the crap out of this game back in the day. This edition is a very welcome one. Improving in every way yet still retains its original charm. Definitely a must buy if you have played in the past or are getting into RTS games
tiny maps contrived asset limits in game obnoxiously obvious agendas for eternal drm & microtransation rigged gameplay dreams get it if its free to laugh at how old age of empire 1-2 is better or if wanting something that you can forget contrived limits in age of mythology ORIGINAL instead
