Agari is a very simple, basic even from the point of view of a player, mahjong riichi game. There's nothing spectacular about it and that's exactly the best thing about it. Just mahjong and nothing else. A lot like Tenhou, except you can't play with randoms but can play with CPU or 1-3 friends online (CPU will fill the remaining seats). Also, if you exit an offline match, you can continue it later. It has the same standard rules we all know by heart already and - although it doesn't offer a tutorial for complete newcomers - it does have a handy list of yaku and rules for those who already can play but are still learning. The dev seems to know his code as much as his yaku: the game is just a bit over 100MB, my CPU and GPU barely notice its existence when running, menus are well-made, interactions with tiles and UI elements smooth, you can resize the window however you like, no crashes, no bugs, a lot of customisation options, native Windows, Linux and Mac versions... If anything, I personally like to see the wall physically there on the table instead of just the number of remaining tiles. An option to change that would nice. In that case the dora indicator in top-left wouldn't be needed any more and maybe honba could be stuffed into the middle, so the whole top-left UI could be removed. Also, how about more action time limit options? 10-30, 20-60 or even an option to turn it off completely? This could help those trying to teach mahjong to others using the game. Maybe custom riichi songs? Sure, I can convert my .mp3 into .ogg and swap it with one of the default tracks, but it would be easier with native support. Still, as it is, it's already pretty much a perfect way to play digital mahjong.
Objectively:
9/10
Lacks the presentation of Sega NET MJ, the single-player structure of Dirtbag Mahjong, the ruleset customization of Riichi City, the frictionless multiplayer of Riichi Advanced (free), the strong incumbent playerbase of Tenhou, the UI polish of Maru-Jan, and the AI strength of Mattari (free, from 2008!). Like...it's proficient. For $7, in the highly specific field of "fully-offline PC-native riichi", you could do worse. But there's a pervasive AI-assisted carelessness from menus to manual to mat; it doesn't do anything well, just barely well enough, and even that judgement requires a fair amount of mercy. New players will find no teaching tools or tutorials—not even a rules leaflet—and long-time players will be bored by the weak AI, which seems incapable of building value and opts for senseless damaten from miles behind. Even when playing fast and careless, my average placement is 1.6 and my average deal-in value is 1300. If you don't have a play group willing to drop a combined $28 on worst-in-class presentation, Agari is effectively a subpar console game—the kind you've been able to play since the SNES (and can still play today). I'm not sure why the store page spends 13 paragraphs and two bulleted lists talking up the most bare-bones client currently available.
First off: ♥♥♥♥ the creepy gooner riichi apps out there. Solid riichi game. Love it. Just riichi, no frills -- if this ends up having an online queue to play with randoms (as opposed to just online w/ friends) it'll probably be the best riichi game barring tenhou for english-speakers.
Promising riichi mahjong client that is refreshingly focused on just the board game. Game plays well and almost entirely how one would expect. I just wish that there were sound effects in addition to the voices for chii/pon/kan and ron/tsumo calls, and that there was an option for right-click tile discard.
Having played virtually every riichi mahjong client on Steam, Agari has become my go-to for offline play after only a couple hours. I really appreciate the no-frills presentation and how snappy everything is. It just feels good to play. It's got all the customization and stat-tracking options you could want, as well. And the dev is incredibly attentive and responds quickly to bug reports and feature requests. I asked if it was possible to add a fullscreen toggle and within 12 hours it had been added. If you're looking for a riichi mahjong client to play against the CPU or online against friends, this is the one.
Despite a few oddities, such as the game seemingly re-starting in the options menu at random and strict lines on round winds, cannot force a west-round due to insufficient points (30,000); the game plays well enough but bless the dev, I can turn-off Red-Fives! While it is missing the feature that draws most people into the gacha games to begin with, auto match-making, it plays well. The AI does not feel cheap and is reasonably strong enough for beginners to practice on. It would be nice to see something like Mortal for game reviews. I always love to yell at both Maka and Mortal. Another thing that is great to see from a game that has great potential for evolution, the developer seems responsive to community feedback. (They pushed an update that removed the AI generated voices.) I hope to see more from this game going forward.
One of the better offline clients out there. I've been constantly looking for a riichi client to play with bots at own pace, most of the clients are either abandoned and no longer supported (or recieve no new features, only bugfixes), or packed with weak bots. According to roadmap (https://agari.app/roadmap/), dev is focusing on bringing difficult bots, which will make this client a must-buy. Better than Kemono Mahjong: client is smoother, pc focused Better than Mahjong Nagomi: from every perspective Current bots are OK, feels like they know how to fold, etc. Would be cool to get in the future: - Replays - Ability to turn off automatic riichi highlight - Ability to review the table after the deal - something else
Recently started my riichi journey and I can tell I'm going to sink a lot of hours into this game. I share most, if not all, the same sentiments as the developer. The game is already really nicely polished and you can tell the developer really cares about riichi mahjong and making a quality product that is backed by a solid foundation. Can't wait for what lies ahead for this game!
A fantastic & minimalist Riichi Mahjong game ever, it reminds me Mafia-like in East Asia (Can't mention game name) mini-game Mahjong design. It has neat basic UI and has some customization table & tiles etc. There are few nice to have features or more ideas to share that some other Riichi Mahjong clients have (not all of them):

Add a controller support & proper navigation UI for it (Like showing what button does)
Add keyboard users to bind keys to control discard one of 14 tiles, for example using row numbers (E.g: ~ to =) or let us customize our own keys, including to other binds for pon, kan, chi, riichi and ron/tsumo & ignore etc.
Add top view table option, sort of like 2D game to view tiles better, especially on smaller screen like handheld.
More customization for table or upload my own picture background, including tiles.
Have peer to peer or server browser to show list of online or LAN players with password for invite only
Steam Deck Verified (It combines with the first list I mentioned) but scaling UI to be able to see a small screen.
Other than that, the game is awesome, keep it up! It's rarely to see a very good quality Riichi Mahjong game on this platform. :)
Agari is a mahjong client that has quickly become my go-to for non-ranked play. It has no fluff or fat attached. The ui is simple and clean and the whole game runs extremely fast. Its a mahjong client i could actually use without having to worry about people looking over my shoulder. The bots are not exceptionally strong but are still fun to play against and provide a challenge at an intermediate level. Ive read that the developer intends to add stronger bots in the future so im excited to see how that goes. The daily wall mode is a niche ive not seen elsewhere and provides a fun way to compete with friends. The only thing I am really missing here is a mobile version. This style of offline, lightweight, safe for work mahjong would be great as a phone app. Other mahjong clients tend to be a bit bloated and, even more importantly, are covered in scantily clad anime girls that would get me labeled as a pervert if seen over my shoulder (and seriously, who wants these gacha mechanics in a mahjong game??? Why are they so popular? Do people have no shame?)
