About
"
Aethernaut is a first person puzzle game set in an open steampunk world. Guided by the voice of Cornell, a scientist who claims to want to help you, you are tasked with solving various puzzles to progress and reach the deeper areas of the Construct.
Choose how the story unfolds based on your answers to Cornell’s philosophical questions, as he seeks to better understand your nature and personality. Would you rather be remembered forever as an evil tyrant, or be completely forgotten? Is happiness or usefulness a more important purpose in life? When we fall in love, do we love the real person or just our idea of that person?
Through your answers, you will discover yourself and learn more about your past, and how you are able to survive the deadly aether.
But there is more to the story. As you delve deeper into the abandoned Construct, an unseen entity tries to make contact with you, and begs for your help. Who will you trust? Who are you, really?
Solve puzzle rooms using light, sensors, portals and time travel to gather the aether vials and access the core of the Construct.
Discover hidden secrets within the Construct. Jump, climb, and use the portals to reach new areas.
How will you answer Cornell’s questions? His increasingly personal queries will prompt you to reveal your personality, which will in turn shape the story around you. With 6 possible endings, depending on your answers and how you solve the puzzles (or if you do at all!) Aethernaut will unlock the depths of your soul.
Nearly 4 areas in, out of an unknown length. Thus far little difficulty. Puzzles are often clunky, unclear, or tedious. Tutorials are nondescript text in the upper left that I almost missed. Game stutters and has unseemly loading transitions. Once required me to reload a save for a door to function. Accessibility options are just changing some colors and a jump aid. No option for adjusting mouse sensitivity. If you mute the awful dialogue and ignore the do-nothing story, then you have, at best, an okay puzzle game. Not quite worth full price, but makes for an alright time-killer if you've run out of alternatives.
Ok this is not a terrible game and originally I planned to give it a tentative thumbs up, but I will get into how I ended up leaving this as a negative review. Ok I finished just under 40 puzzles out of the 94. According to steam I had 7 hours on record to get to that point. But on that playthrough I got bored and frustrated with the puzzles, but the story was building a nice intrigue, so I told myself I would come back and find the ending. Well, I came back. The puzzles got frustrating faster than last time and sometimes it is hard to tell if it is a bug or that you were meant to do something or found an exploit or maybe you're just dumb. One puzzle I just jumped to the left without using a single item, so I would think that is not how it was supposed to happen, but cool, thinking outside the box to be rewarded, I guess. One puzzle that lets you into the next main area I did, but the door would not open. Turns out, it was a bug. Reset the puzzle, did the exact same thing, door opened. But some puzzles do have that nice little "ah-ha!" moment, which is nice. The time travel puzzles are the worst. You make a little light clone of yourself that moves at the exact same time you moved during the process, neat idea. You can fast forward your little light self to save time, but it is frustrating to try again and again just to have yourself get locked in a room to start over. Mini note, it would have been nice to have a reason why only the main game items can push switches. I'm standing there struggling with a puzzle surrounded by 20 items that could push a button. The game has a similar enough aesthetic to compare it to BioShock, a watery comparison though it may be (slight pun). The feel of the areas is like a discount BioShock, but the areas are bare and the game still somehow makes my PC suffer, the fan was cranking at all times. Music is chill. It cuts very sharply in changing locations, but jarring, but still not bad. One thing that felt weird throughout most of the game is that it feels like I am missing steps, like the game was intending to only let me pass into an area after having done enough, but that is only true for the first two sections. So I would end up in this weird situation where I would teach myself what to do, then three puzzles or a whole area later have the game tutorialize it. So back to my coming back to the game to figure out what happens in the story. After I was wearing out of the puzzles and could feel my interest waning and realizing I would never come back. I used the complete puzzle option for each puzzle, felt like a huge cheater, but I committed to it. Even just walking to the puzzle started feeling like a chore and that was before the map started messing with me. If you need to go back to find a puzzle, good luck; each area is somewhat different from the last but the areas themselves are very samey. The game offers dots with distance on them to show you vaguely where a puzzle is, but doesn't show a path, so if it's 3m away but it's above you, figuring out how to get there is on you. That is without mentioning that areas will relock themselves (reset puzzle will typically fix this, but why do I need to do this to reset the bridge I already made). I get to the end to find out you need all the items to get what I assume is the good ending. I tried going back for the bad ending, but even with a previous save the game still told me I had all the items so nothing would happen (honestly, maybe I did the last step wrong, but at that point I was over it). So I finally walk up to the final area, frustrated as heck from wandering around now bittered saying to myself the game better have a satisfying ending for this to have been worth it. But the ending was basically... nothing? The game starts to make you think there is a deep secret and that maybe you are being Atlas'ed (BioShock) and maybe you're something more or main voice guy's evil or the voices are evil, maybe you're part of the voices. In the end that game basically goes "eh everyone is kinda cool and you'll never know who you are". So I would say that the story let me down that was the nail in the thumbs down coffin.
If you like puzzle games like Portal and Talos Principle, you'll probably like this game too. They aren't just in the game description for the SEO. The puzzles have been fun and challenging so far, and I love the steampunk style. The background music is pretty cool too. Similar to Talos Principle, you don't have to solve every single puzzle in an area, so if one puzzle totally stumps you, you can move on and only come back later if you want to. Visuals and voice acting are a bit rough around the edges, but for a one man developer it definitely exceeds expectations. So far, I've only encountered one bug where the last door of a room didn't open automatically. Reloading my save fixed it, but if it didn't the menu option to open doors most likely would have.
Listen, This game isn't awful. A new mic for the voice actor that doesnt peak and actually filters out white noise wouldn't hurt, and the puzzle mechanics need to be explained more but I think I may have started to get them after 40 minutes of guessing. The real problem though is that this game seems to run at 40 or less fps constantly with severe lag spikes throughout. I do not have a bad computer by ANY stretch of the imagination and greater games than this one have had no issues. Why does it run so poorly? Makes the game miserably unplayable when I freeze at least every minute or so to load the next area. I love puzzle games, and those people comparing this to Talos or Portal are not far off. However, the voice acting quality really does ruin some of that immersion and the lack of clarity in puzzle mechanics take this from a well done puzzle game to more of a poorly made knockoff. To elaborate on "lack of clarity" in the puzzle mechanics, I never seem to know the end point of a puzzle until I get there, so sometimes I get stuck trying to open a door that isn't even relevent to the solution. The door opening mechanics are inconsistent. I get that shadow door lock things need the shadow box light stuff to open and the regular light ones need regular light, but sometimes they don't need light on them at all? And sometimes they stay open even after the light is removed and sometimes they don't? Sometimes certain doors that seemingly have no lock thing by them are connected to other doors previous in the puzzle even though they show no connection to those doors so How Was I Supposed to Know??? The items you can interact with and the items you can't are so similar to each other that I often go around spamming my mouse to see if there are clickable things hidden. Sure, this doesn't happen often, but It's happened enough to frustrate me!! The tutorial isn't clear enough either, and even now, after I think I finally have a shaky grasp on the mechanics, I absolutely do not understand how I got the final tutorial doors to open. I spammed everything I could think of and somehow got lucky and it opened by me setting the light post thing in a corner of the room by nothing else relevent???? This game has serious potential. I wish it was able to deliver in all the ways it tried.
There is no ability to reset individual puzzles and I got stuck in an unwinnable situation.
Quite good if you like first person puzzles like talos principal.
Aethernaut is visually very interesting. If you like The Talos Principle, you will love this. It is definitely a spiritual successor to that and Portal, if not a worthy sequel. If there is anything I would suggest, it's that the voice acting needs to be revisited. I especially like the use of light and lighting in the game. Great work, everyone.
Really loving this game so far, one of the best 3D puzzle games I've played in a while! It has some Portal vibes (cubes, portals) but combined with new mechanics (light cubes, time travel, and freezing mechanics). The puzzles are logical and challenging. I've played the demo as well, so looking forward to seeing how complex some of the puzzles will get!
TL;DR: Game becomes progressively tedious, no clear tutorials, achievments broken

So, I should have listened to that one prevous review where game was dropped after 7 hours, if so, I would have had a more positive impression. It was fun until time portal was introducted, then puzzles become so tedious and there was no clear explanation that, for example, you can spawn a dozen of copies of yourself to do some tasks. Okay, I struggled through it, completed almost all of them, went to another area and POOF another concept (dimension portal) with no explanation whatsoever. That was a boiling point to me, but I completed enough puzzles to get an proper ending, so skip right to it... and there was no achievments. I did every one of four true endings - no one is awarded me an achievment, although it should. My recommendation - only at sale, and drop game at least after "Excavation" location, but better before.
