Very sweet, can I take it to Lapland with me?
My parasocial friend Chris O'Neill told me about this game, it makes me so happy I click my heels together while I spill birthday cake ice cream all over myself and squee in delight. Seriously though, this game is a well thought out and designed platformer with a lot of wacky power-ups and a LIGHT-hearted story. The only downside is it seems to be going by too fast as I'm just about 2 hours in and have half the map cleared but maybe that's just me EDIT: there's more to this game than I thought, after the first wave of bosses the story progresses and new stages open up

It's not bad but it's not great. I had a lot of hope for this early on because the float mechanic was really interesting and well done. It's started out really fun. Sadly my excitement disappeared when some of the bad design choices started becoming evident. For example, the hit detection isn't great. The enemies and the level design are pretty bland. The bosses are serviceable but it's very easy for them to get locked into a pattern that won't let you attack for a minute or two, maybe more. There's a lot of tedium that comes from an under polished game here. There's a lot of padding near the end of the game, probably because you breeze through everything else pretty quickly. There's not many levels and while you're incentived slightly to return there's really not much reason to unless you just like playing the same thing over again. And the story, while chuckle worthy at first, really overstays its welcome. Characters ramble on forever. You have to press a button to advance the text and to speed it up. And even if you're pressing the button repeatedly to skip everything some dialogue will take a couple minutes or more. It's mostly just random or dumb things happening too. It's rarely interesting. It feels like it's there to stretch playtime out. I do like the guy who gives you powers though.

"Adventures of Chris" is a handheld (Nintendo Switch)/console game that's also been put on Steam as a bit of an afterthought, as it's very much designed for the handheld/console gaming audience. It's yet another of literally thousands of 2D retro platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. This one is genuinely made, however, it doesn't feature garbage pixel "art", nor is it an asset flip. This does not, however, mean it's a fantastic game. On the upside, the game does feature customisable controls and resolution, so at least some of the basic, minimum requirements have been met. Unfortunately there's a number of other technical defects and shortcomings which contribute to the game being difficult to recommend to gamers. The first thing gamers will notice when trying to play this is the absolutely terrible hitbox design. I think this may have been caused with issues with the hand drawn art sprite mapping or something, but the cause isn't as important as the effect... this terrible hitboxing combined with somewhat loose control handling makes for an un-fun gaming experience. The game is comprised of somewhat mediocre hand drawn 2D illustrations instead of professional looking 3D game assets. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget to arrange someone who can create graphical assets properly, or lack of talent. Regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is very low, beneath what PC gamers have come to expect in this era of cutting edge photorealistic 3D graphics. At least it's not pixel "art", but if you're looking for contemporary, immersive visuals, this game is a fail. While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals. Because this is designed for handheld/portable gaming appliances, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the low power handheld gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the mobile game developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for low power handhelds forces upon a game. While this might run well on a Steam Deck, we must remember the vast majority of gamers here are gaming on PC. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 12 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? "Adventures of Chris" has the laughable price of $15 USD, for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. For comparison, the $15 asking price for this game could get you games like "The Elder Scrolls Online", "Mirror's Edge" or "Deep Rock Galactic". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.

Adventures of Chris is a solid platformer with very interesting mechanics relating to the main character being a balloon. Consequently, there is good variety to mechanics, which is refreshing in a genre where the mechanics always boil down to having a double jump, getting an air dash, and some wall breaking thing. There's more to this one, where you get variations on how to control being a balloon. I like this. that's good. The boss fights are great and can be challenging, but they're rewarding when you approach them right and get their patterns down. The story's great with good dialogue and humor. There's interesting lore to the game, but it can easily be bypassed without missing anything. The main character is likable all throughout, and you can really put yourself in their shoes. The enemies are well thought out and interesting as characters. Overall, the game is great and I would highly recommend it. The developer does good work, and the next game they have in the pipeline also promises to be a banger.
