Action Commando 2 is extremely rushed. I wouldn't mind "more of the same" if there was at least some attempt to make it seem like the next chapter... but there isn't. The only area that looks different is, deceptively enough, the start so you're lead to believe that at least the aesthetics are different. But no such luck. Very soon we're back to the same old underground corridors that look exactly like in the previous game. Oh you like that cool background with asteroids and space ships? Well, better take a good look because that's the only time you'll see it! It gets so bad that the final level literally reuses areas from Town of Machine and our big payoff for finishing the game is... Nothing! I mean it, there's not even a text at the end. You just press a button and that's it, credits roll. Not to mention it's even shorter than AC1. This game costs almost nothing and yet I still feel ripped off. I guess if you get it in a bundle with Town of Machine and Action Commando 1 you might as well play it because the content that's there is not bad. But this was clearly pushed out of the door before it was anywhere near completion. It feels like a half of what it should have been, even for a bite-sized game.
This is more of a Neutral case than a real recommend. While this game generally falls short of expectations, it is still enjoyable, the gameplay is solid, the game itself is stable. I still had fun. Yet, read on and weigh whether it will be worth it for you. Let's start with the negative to balance out that this is a Recommend review. - Very short. I beat it on normal in about 2.25 hours, and that's with some messing around wasting time. The first game took me about 3.5. (Note: I was already used to the gameplay having played Town of Machine ((the superior of the three)), so the time difference between the Action Commando games was not due to getting more used to the style). - The already minimal story seems to be entirely abandoned soon after the halfway point and there is no conclusion at the end, just cut to the choice of NG+ or return to menu. - This one is just personal preference: on the last level, no indication that the last save you reach will leave no chance of going back and using any upgrade materials you've been saving. Beat the game with a lot unused. - The last floor re-uses some areas from Town of Machine. That would be fine if it had (1) a narrative at that point to give this reuse some context and (2) it wasn't so short. Some original creative areas after those reused ones (a full floor or two, depending on their size) would have aided a great deal. Some positives: + The game is still fun. If you like your first playthrough enough, replayability can come in different difficulties or NG+, as well as in looking for some hard-to-find secrets (only found 1; I HOPE there are more; I know I didn't find one gun). + The controls are solid and functional; combat felt smooth and satisfying. It's action-packed, cartoon-gory and wild. + I encountered no glitches while playing. + It's cheap. If you like the first one, you can decide if this one will be worth the cost knowing that you WILL get less (about 1/3 less). Maybe wait for a sale if not. After playing the first one, I rushed to buy this one hoping for a sequel that raises the bar. Having played this one, I wouldn't rush to get a third unless I knew that it was a step forward rather than a step backwards. To scale my feelings on this series, if Town of Machine was 5/5, then Action Commando was 4/5 and Action Commando 2 was 3/5. I don't feel that this game should be avoided; I liked it. But I do think the creator should take to heart the criticisms this game has and will receive.
So, this review is meant to encompass both AC games as a whole. In AC1, we already got some changes - along with the notion of the game itself being a sequel to Town of Machine. The Inventory's been done away with, in favor of just having every weapon to be obtained automatically assigned to a specified hotkey spot (still miss being able to assign the shotgun to Hotkey 2). Also, we get the "Dash" ability right from the start of the game; but, in AC2, we don't have as many (not an issue IMO, since I barely use it). Another change I enjoyed was how the start forces you to actually use the melee weapon, before you actually get your first gun. Honestly, I think that's a nice call, since it forces you to learn how to actually use it, instead of letting it gather dust in your "inventory" - and it makes for an incentive to learn how to deflect the projectiles back at the enemy (LOVED this feature, because it's such an "eye for an eye" treatment for the enemies that use the tracking projectiles -- which annoyed the hell outta me). The biggest Up for both games, however: callbacks! Almost every change/difference between Action Commando 1 & 2 is some kind of callback to previous games. Town of Machine already did this with its Black Casino Chips (really hoping Dimension Drifter gets worked on again). I've seen people complain about the "sameness" of the layouts after the first part; but to me, I think that just adds to the "Drifter universe" aspect: almost every one of these games is connected to each other, in some form or fashion (i.e. Quantum Physics, as Doc explains). Spoilers for this next part:
At the end of Action Commando 2, The Fool (from Town of Machine) makes a return as the Final Boss; but, it actually turns out to be an Abyss Watcher: the strongest enemy from UNLOVED's infamous Abyss difficulty.
(This particular callback would only make sense for those who played UNLOVED long enough to actually know what I'm talking about.) One other thing: yes, almost every weapon/upgrade in this game is easily missable; but, that's because the same reason we're forced to find the keycards necessary to progress in Doom-likes should be the same reason why we need to find every weapon/upgrade that we can possibly get: you know for a fact that the game's going to get very hard (even on easy difficulties), so you really should take every opportunity you can get to find the secrets, and get everything you can get to stay ahead of the game. One last thing: despite the lack of an 'ending' (as everyone complains about) for AC2, keep in mind that it's basically the same with UNLOVED: you strive through the level; you get the end rewards; and that's your lot -- even on Abyss difficulty, even IF you managed to get an Abyss chest (because damn, those Abyss Watchers are difficult), there's not much after that. No endgame hurrah, or nothing. Everything lore-based in UNLOVED was to be found in the "Memories" you unlock.
This one is not as good as Action Commando 1 but it's got almost all of the same ingredients. It's a short game, took me 5 hours on brutal mode, I don't think this is good value for the money, and the game was actually a little bit boring, because the level arrangements and Monster fights are kind of lazily assembled. If you are thinking between this and the original, get the original. Only buy this if you fall in love and need a second experience.
You should definitely play the first one, as this continues the story. It's not a massive improvement over the original, but it's not any worse either. If you like the first one you will like this. If you haven't bought the first one go do that now.
o jogo é bom recomendo
Dont have much to say really. it's a decent solid and full of fun game that resembles doom and other old school shooting game, only it's with over-the-top view. The control's smooth, responsive, and accurate with almost no flaw. The system's reasonable and brings the game reasonable difficulty increase throughout the play through. I'll recommend it to players that love old school shooters and a light-weight fun shooting experience.
