BEST. GAME. EVER.
Great game! I enjoyed the cinematics a lot. Music was great. Good story. Fun gameplay. I expected a boring "get into plane, shoot at other planes type of game" with the gameplay being the sole element, but very happy that there is a lot more to it than that. Definitely hyped for Ace Combat 8 now. :D
fly fighter planes and be the Ace that u always wanted to be... but beware of nasty motion sickness
this game turned me into a plane autist. 10/10 would fox2 again

I really want to recommend this game, but it has severe issues which should have been fixed by now, especially given that this game's price hasn't decreased since lauch. Firstly, I can't write about the multiplayer experience. I've been playing the campaign, and I probably won't play much multiplayer when I'm done because of the issues mentioned below. I love the campaign to death. The mission design and power fantasy this game gives me carries the entire, flawed experience for me. I love the superweapons and the epic, final duel that the story is building to. If I feel differently at the end of the game, I'll update this review. At this juncture, though, it's virtually impossible for this game to flip my final verdict. The graphics are also pretty good. The planes and their animations look great. Explosions are phenomenal, aside from a few which fall under the "ball of light" category. Character faces, on the other hand, are horrendous. The majority of the characters in every cutscene look uncanny. I suppose it's better than not seeing them, though. On the other hand. Voice acting isn't half bad, but the writing suffers severely from "anime-isms." When the writers translated the dialogue from Japanese to English, they weren't given enough creative license to make it sound natural. Virtually every cutscene, briefing, mission, etc. has at least one line that feels stilted or wrong. (Often times, it's most lines.) Additionally, the names of cities, polities, etc. in this setting are terrible. Three of the major names end in "sea," and it took me about 10 missions to tell them apart. Lastly, giving a penal unit aircraft is hilarious, and the story never quite justified the desperation that this decision would have required. The key issue that holds this game back, though, is the control setup. It's horrendous. I'm a veteran of Battlefield 4, and I got quite good at flying the jets and helicopters in that game. I also have a bit less experience with War Thunder and Everspace 2, both of which had better control schemes. Ultimately, the planes feel twitchy and hard to control. Using thumbsticks for all three control axes and bumpers for weaponry gives you far more control over your aircraft, but this game doesn't let you remap your gamepad. In conclusion, a premium-priced, AAA game with microtransactions shouldn't have any of the aforementioned issues, especially the shocking control layout. On the other hand, I've been having fun despite these foibles, and I don't regret spending $15 on this game. I can't say conclusively whether you should starve or buy a cheeseburger, but I don't think you should fork over $60 for this. I'd say $20 is a fair price right now. This game does make me excited to try Project Wingman and Nuclear Option, though, so I'll probably update this review once I've played through those I'm optimistic for AC8, too, but seeing how ILCA butchered Pokemon BDSP puts a bit of a damper on my mood.
