No controller support, no saves, instadeath. This game is truly awful, and I suspect it was done at least in part to hide the small amount of content. I'm often searching the sub-$1 section of steam sales looking for undiscovered gems, but I can assure you this one deserves to stay obscure. The core idea is solid: explore a maze of corridors in an abandoned hospital finding the key items that unlock doors. The level design and graphics are decent. But it's so easy to die, often by mistake because the controls are so bad, making it way too easy to jump wildly around the room and then fall to your death because the one time you need to jump you couldn't. FYi the steam input controller support is decent if you turn down sensitivity to 20%, but you'll have to mess with key bindings too, and honestly this game just isn't remotely worth it.
First-person indie horror and parkour game where you run, find keys, and escape nightmares in an abandoned hospital ✅Horror atmosphere ✅Simple controls ✅Good audiovisual style that adds tension to the game ✅The graphics are decent considering the small studio with a low budget ❌Unclear plot; you start the game and have no idea what's going on ❌Repetitive sequences, few unique mechanics ❌I can buy better games for this price ❌❌Verdict: [strike] Very Bad [/strike] , [strike] Bad [/strike] , [b] Average [/b] , [strike] Decent [/strike] , [strike] Good [/strike] , [strike] Very Good [/strike] (Rating scale for tested games) If you have any questions about my reviews, feel free to ask. I'm not really sure if Acanthoceras is an asset flip. Some elements of this game certainly make it seem like the developer put some effort into assembling some kind of original here. On the other hand, a lot of the game assets don't seem like they were created by the developer, but they haven't credited any asset creators for supplying assets, which might be a case of plagiarism. There's no evidence, so we need to give the benefit of the doubt... regardless, asset flip or not, the quality here is indistinguishable from many asset flip/cash grab scams, and that's a problem in itself. Certainly, just like most asset flips, this game is really unpolished, clunky, and buggy. Some things just don't work when they should, and this is bad because this first person horror adventure features parkour elements that, surprise surprise, sometimes just don't work. You also just sort of die randomly from time to time... there's no tutorial or explanation for what's going on, they just didn't bother. I mean, they knew what they thought the game was supposed to be, so that should be enough for everyone, right? The true horror behind Acanthoceras is that someone genuinely thought it would be okay to launch a game in such a terrible state on Steam. And even worse, charge money for it. The game is very simplistic, small and limited in scope and ambition. This feels more like a tech demo, proof of concept or student homework assignment rather than a fully fledged product designed for PC gamers. As such it doesn't offer any real value as a serious PC game. Taking this shovelware seriously as if it was a genuine attempt to make a game, it doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The game assets are fairly mediocre/low quality which fits with the idea they weren't developed by the game creator... they look like they're "just reasonable enough" to go on sale as part of an asset pack. The issue of asset flipping aside, ultimately the quality of these assets is low and low quality always makes for a less than optimal gaming experience. The game assets are far from bleeding edge, with lowish polygon counts and somewhat low resolution textures, making this look like it's at least 10 years old. It's unclear why the developers weren't able to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets for the game, and also irrelevant... what matters is that this looks poor in comparison to more professionally produced games as a result of their decisions. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 2 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? Acanthoceras is relatively cheap at $2 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. This is also competing with over 11,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
[h1] Blurry, claustrophobic like experience. Run around corridors while doing wall runs and front flips but watch out for the monsters. Clunky gameplay, it needs more polish. Collect blood bags to restore health because you're a vampire (shock). Don't fall into pits and avoid hot steam. Overall plays like a fever dream. [/h1]
Definitely a little rough around the edges, some of the props don't have collision and the ai pathing can be a little funky at times, and it could definitely use some spell-checking. But aside from that, very solid foundation for a parkour type game. For a dollar I would definitely recommend it if you enjoy parkour-style games in similar to maybe mirror's edge. It takes a minute to get used to the controls, since you don't jump till you release the spacebar, but once you get used to it the movement feels very rewarding and it's fun to transition through the stage. Can't wait to see where this goes! Normal playthrough: https://youtu.be/UDzzlR_xggk Speedrun: https://youtu.be/J-sei_HwbHc
I wanted to give this game a try, i cant really speak on how good the story is because i couldn't really play for much more than a few minutes before getting motion sickness from all the rolling i was doing on accident by double tapping which direction i wanted to walk.
Everything in this game is broken: jump with delay, wallruns work in less than 25% times, you can walk on dead zones and not die, to use heal and to hit enemy acquire one sequence of actions. Futhermore with all with problems death is a premadeath.
Concept is great. I was looking for another game with parkour, like Die Young or Dying Light game. Fortuitously I don't have to worry about losing hours of my life to a computer and enjoyment here. I wish the developer much success in all future endeavors. Keyboard and mouse is really difficult so the game must be designed for controller. Thumbs up for idea behind this game. Thumbs down for fun or any chance of playing it.
It is short as a game, the view bobbing from strafing are kinda nauseating. but you could probaly run the game in around 10 mins if you know how !
i tried to communicate in the community hub, you don't react so i will refund care hard input lag in this game
