Overview
Abyssal Blade is a boss rush inspired by MMO raid encounters, with bosses that utilize difficult attack patterns. The only path to victory lies in learning about these encounters and solving their puzzles while dealing enough damage to our enemies. There are no health bars here, nor do we need other roles such as healing or tanking.

Story
Somehow you have encountered the Abyssal Blade. You have been plunged into the five stages of Grief. Despair remembers you. Anger simply wants to burn everything. Bargain is looking to buy the way out. Depression looms in light and dark. And Grief guards the very blade. Succeed, and you shall wield it or destroy it…
Gameplay
Our character has only four tools at our disposal, besides basic movement. Dash allows us to quickly move aside to avoid incoming danger but does not give invulnerability. As for attacks, we got the basic slash, a faster weak attack, and cleave, a slow but powerful attack. When we deal enough damage we charge our ultimate ability, the Surge, a quick and powerful version of slash, and our best damage per second move. We may charge it when not attacking the boss once the encounter has started.
Graphics & Audio
When you start the game, an animated pixelated, epic background welcomes us. The ambience on every stage and its background are very detailed as well. Whenever a boss uses abyssal surge, the background becomes even more intense. Every stage has its own soundtrack attached to it (which you can play again in the lobby), fitting with the boss's own stage of grief. They are synchronized as the encounter progresses further to let the adrenaline pump your reflexes.
Pros & Cons
Pros Epic boss rush fights that let you play MMO raid mechanics in single-player. Straightforward mechanics, only one type of role needed. Banger soundtrack. Epic graphics for a small game. Rewarding journey in its own. Cons Sometimes very unforgiving. Rating: 9/10 Do you have what it takes to join the 0% club?
Pretty decent boss rush game inspired by MMO boss mechanics, but there are some important caveats. A lot of times when people bring up "quality of life" features they really mean difficulty reduction or an entirely different design, but this game does actually lack some pretty important QOL features for a difficult boss rush game, no instant restart being probably the worst example. I think on the whole it's maybe slightly too punishing. Not difficult execution-wise, but punishing. A lot of patterns you're basically guaranteed to die to your first time seeing but on subsequent tries will present no problem at all. This isn't inherently a problem, but it can lead to situations where you spend most of your time repeating the early phases of a boss which present no challenge whatsoever and only a very small percentage of your playtime encountering or overcoming new scenarios/mechanics, which I don't think is ideal. In a situation like that the greater challenge can become just overcoming the tedium of executing something you have completely down without getting too annoyed or bored that you start making mistakes—which is a skill, to be sure, but maybe not the most fun to be tested on. Even worse is when patterns that present no challenge once you know the trick also don't allow an opportunity to damage the boss. Functionally these serve as knowledge checks with a mandatory waiting time attached, which also isn't very fun. There's a bar you can charge up during these moments to do more damage later, but if it's already full then you have nothing productive to do but wait, and the bar is even removed in the higher difficulty mode. I'd like to see more games like this, but I think Abyssal Blade could've taken some design cues from something like Furi, with a carefully considered lives system which increases the amount of time spent on new challenges, and which basically always allows the player the opportunity to be taking some kind of action which helps defeat the boss.
It delivers what it promises and ups the difficulty by forcing you to master fights and deal damage more optimally rather than throw more at you.

[th]The Good[/th]

Good warmup for DPS uptime
Challenging enough for how short it is
Music is fine
Makes a good excuse to PvP friends for kill times

[th]The Bad[/th]

It's very short

Depression was a nostalgically fun fight, it died before I saw all mechanics even on Abyss.

I wish Abyss Mode had new mechanics instead of just limitations

Needs ultimate difficulty...
As someone who is starved for raiding activity and doesn't want to play anything too committal; this was a great game for what I needed. If there are any updates in the future for new bosses, mechanics, or any challenges to try in the future then by all means I'd come back and play more. But if not, this was a nice and short challenge to play... too bad I suck at DPSing. Finishing deathless normal makes me wish I stuck around Lost Ark to try deathless hell mode... where's the deathless Abyss Mode achievement so I feel incentivized to try qq.
For $5, it's worth it. I've seen other reviews talking about FFIV Raid mechanics but I don't know anything about that. I was just looking for a game that pits me against a boss until I defeat, and it delivered on that front. It's definitely short, but honestly I think its the perfect length. Any longer and I think they would have to introduce another mechanic to keep the gameplay refreshing. The boss fights really test your memory and ability to see patterns, so it does require you to memorize their attack patterns and create strategies that can min/max your damage output. The story is what you expect it to be so don't expect to be surprised. Sound design is great, and the game looks good. The boss fights can get hectic, but nothing that feels impossible. Definitely recommend! 8.5/10
Giving the game a thumbs up because the good barely outweighs the bad. BAD --------- I gave up after 15 minutes because of these two things in combination: Bosses kill you in 1 hit Many boss mechanics won't make sense until you die to them once or twice To me this feels like my time's being wasted. Which really sucks because this game is COOL! It's really too bad I have to die 5 times to stuff that is impossible to figure out on your first try in order to enjoy the good stuff. GOOD ------- The theme of grief is awesome, the combat sandbox seems really cool and I loved it instantly, and the boss attacks are usually fun to play around! And the first boss was SUPER creative - for real well done. I plan to revisit this game when I have more patience.
Not much to say other than it does what it sets out to do. Tough bosses that challenge how you learn boss attack patterns with simple core abilities that you the player have making it focus all that much more on the boss designs themselves. Which are all very unique and satisfying when you finally down them.
