A Story of Distress - красивое приключение в стелс стиле.
Fun game where you can unleash your rage on innocent people by shoving a dagger anywhere you'd like. Satisfying combat and a pleasing look. The developers care about this game and it shows, but I still think 29.99 is a bit too high.
Experienced on the Oculus Rift with Touch Controllers. Spoiler-free Review.
This game has so much wasted potential. I originally saw this game when it was priced at $24.99 and I was tempted but I figured I'd wait for some reviews before splurging. A little while later I see the game has dropped in price to $9.99, but I'm seeing the negative reviews. Then a few days later the Steam Summer Sale starts and it's down to $6.99. Is this game worth it? Sure. As long as you keep your expectations low. I finished the whole game in 2.6 hours. It starts out with a very good opening narrative scene. It also has an okay ending. Unfortunately, there is little narrative in between. It's really either kill the guards or avoid detection. I, of course, decided to kill everything in my path. The practice of law will leave you with that inner silent rage that ... well, I digress. Long story short, I enjoy backstabbing stuff. However, the core combat stealth mechanic is just not very interesting. It gets tedious after awhile. You stab things in the back for 1 hit kills. You avoid line of sight and running near guards as they will hear your footsteps if you run near them. You can break line of sight by getting behind objects (crouching in real life helps). The chickens & rats making noise when you get near them don't seem to attract the guard's attention. Humans making noises however can. Backstabbing a guard and launching them in the air also doesn't seem to get much attention. Although, killing by bow does seem to make them walk towards the dead guard if they are close by. You can also kill guards 1 on 1 out in the open. 2 on 1 is probably your death. You have three targets to kill. One is at a camp, the other is in a castle, and the other is in a prison. You basically go down the corridors for the most part and just clear the area or stealthily walk away. There really wasn't a whole lot of graphical variety, just very generic for the most part. There's daytime, nighttime, and I guess dusk settings as well. Killing the end targets is anti-climatic. Killing civilians gets you an achivement. After you progress you gain additional abilities. You get a bow, then a throwing knife (that's really just for distractions of killing chickens/ rats), and finally a smoke bomb to disorient enemies away from you. Those unlock sound cool, but they are all clunky in the execution. The bow does have a larget hitbox, but that's good because you need to get headshots to 1 shot guards. It just doesn't feel good shooting it. The throwing knife is just not that useful as a distraction unless you're going for a pure stealth no kill run. And the smoke bomb is kind of op, but annoying to use. You can't see anything and you get disoriented as well. Still, despite all the shortcoming, this is good amount of content for $6.99, especially in VR. You have a nice-length game that is at least something different than most VR offerings. Rate 6/10.
What happens if you mix Resident Evil level voice acting with Orbus VR art design and throw in a splash of Metal Gear? A Story of Distress... https://youtu.be/kPkMZS_d6K0 First the elephant in the room. This game was built using low poly assets that you'll likely find familiar if you've played Orbus VR. it uses the exact same low poly style and even some of the same assets. I don't mind the art style though the NPCs were admittedly very, very ugly. If you're bothered by the low poly art style, no need to read on. The game is initially fairly fun. Stealthing around in VR isn't something that's been done all that much. The more you're able to get into it and embrace the stealth aspect the more fun you'll have. If you're like me though... You quickly learn that it's much easier, quicker and all around more efficient to just walk up to enemies and waggle to win in their face. You can easily take on multiple enemies with this "technique" and live to tell the tale. Huge points off for waggle to win being possible. The game could have used a bit more polish with gaps in the terrain and clipping through some surfaces. Nothing majorly game breaking but noticeable and immersion breaking enough to warrant a mention. It would have been more enjoyable if the game had been a little less linear as well. When I think of stealth games I generally think more open ended allowing for multiple routes to solve tricky situations. This felt more like backstabbing on rails with a handful of forks in the road where you could bypass a guard or two. That being said, I did enjoy most of the game. Until I got to the first general. I was unable to progress farther in the game. Up to this point, everything important to you had been highlighted purple. The game had been training you to look for purple to progress. Even telling you at one point to "follow the purple." However to lure out the general you need to destroy a random barrel by shooting it with an arrow. There's nothing that hints to this. For all intents and purposes the barrel just looks like an ordinary barrel sitting next to the house. For some reason the barrel then blows up as though it were stuffed with gun powder and the poor abused guard runs out and you can continue with the story. To train a player on a specific breadcrumb mechanic and then completely abandon it for something entirely random and unintuitive just feels like poor design. Maybe it's the fact that I didn't figure it out. Maybe I'm just salty, but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It really did feel like a progress blocking bug. Between the Waggle to Win and the issues I had with the first general, I can't recommend this game right now even though I did have fun with it early on in the review. Once I discovered Waggle to Win most of the enjoyment went out the window. Learning the trick to get the general to come out left me not really wanting to get back in the game. YMMV. If you're disciplined enough to play the game as intended without waggling all over then you might be able to enjoy the game. Personally I don't like the LowPoly graphics at all, but the game should have a nice story and be a stealth game. Right at the beginning Story of Distress comes up with a cinematic intro on a horse-drawn carriage - who doesn't think of Skyrim here. Here we get to know why we are on the way to the big city with our brother. Unfortunately our big brother is soon murdered by three high-ranking soldiers behind his back. Fortunately a nice magician helps us selflessly with our revenge plans and equips us with a magic dagger ... The end surprises us. So much for the story. The graphics are really nothing special, unfortunately there are clipping errors from time to time. However, it is positive that the lips of the NPC lips move almost synchronously to the voice. The sound in Story of Distress is really good for such a small game. However, one of the generals suddenly speaks French ... Also the subtitles are well translated, with a few exceptions. We can control our little avenger easily by free locomotion or teleportation through the three levels of Story of Distress. Unfortunately there is no snapshot possibility and the player has to turn himself. In the game we can climb on certain purple glowing objects, which are certain ladders, fences or stones in the walls. If you want A Story of Distress to be a stealthgame, you can play it as an amok running avenging angel. The AI is so bad that it only reacts when you are already standing directly in front of your opponent. The three levels differ only in the design, there is green landscape, city and prison. In each of the three levels, several knights have to be either killed or circumvented in order to "fight" against the general in the end. There are no boss fights. All in all, A Story of Distress is a great idea, but unfortunately in the end it's too boring due to the gameplay, although the story is quite useful. Therefore no recommendation from me. more assassinating reviews 👀 sneaks quietly onto my curator page. Are you in a predicament now too? A really cool concept but executed poorly for VR. the graphics although meant to be blocky are just awful even on the highest setting. the story is plain and simple but due to bad execution of the stealth mechanic it really throughs off the stealthness. the bow is awful and has a big hit box so even if you shoot around a corner it can still hit the corner. the begining has the length of the skyrim opeing cutscene. the dialouge fits in poorly with the mood and character voices a really odd. there is a loud sound that plays when you put away your blade and gets anoying after a while. in the eggining segments where you kill people it seems odd that you cant blend in. one mechanic taht is good is the climbing but just get climbey if you like that sort of thing. Not a good game, not worth thirty dollars, 10 dollars at most.
Played with Windows Mixed Reality (Acer)
Pro:

decent art style
adequate game length (2.5-3 hrs)
German translation
smooth locomotion
save points are well spread, you can easily stop every ~10 min
Con:

stupid guards - AI is non-existent
aiming with the bow is rather a game of luck (at least with WMR)
I've enjoyed the three hours of game play the devs even prepared a beta for me to run on WMR headsets - which they (currently( don't have themselves. Therefore I had to use the touchpad for locomotion, so WMR users should be aware that they can't use their thumb sticks. The game tries to walk in foot steps of Shadwen but does not really achieve that goal. Still, the art style and the sneaking gives enough entertainment for the few hours. The current price tag of EUR 8 is adequate.
VR RUS - https://discord.gg/uGXekxT
There's more to this than meets the eye. I promise! Pros: 1) Story - It may seem standard and predictable it first glance, but if you really think about it the developers attention to detail is actually quite impressive. I won't say more because of spoilers but I'll make a post in the discussion section for anyone wondering what I'm talking about. 2) Play your way - I won't try to say that this is the Undertale of VR because I don't need that kind of drama in my life thank you very much. However, I think everyone can agree that there are thematic similarities. Did you kill every guard? Did you kill civilians? What about the rats and chickens? And of course the biggest question... did you stop to play the lute????? 3) Length vs Price - I'll fully admit that I kind of speed ran my first playthrough simply because I really wanted to see how the story progressed. That took me a little more than two hours. That being said I also fully intend to replay the game at least once, maybe twice, because there are things I definetly missed and other things I really want to try. So if you get the game on sale like I did, for $4, then I can without a doubt say it's worth it. Honestly though, I don't think I'd really mind paying full price for this one, and that is HIGH praise coming from me. 4) Voice Acting - It's there, and it's not bad. There isn't a lot of it of course because it's a stealth game, and some characters are better than others, but overall I think it's good enough to put it in the Pros section. 5) Difficulty Level - This could be a pro or a con depending on what you really want out of this game. Other reviews aren't lying when they say you can win this game by pretty much walking up to every enemy and just waving a knife in their face. However, I will say that, at least for me, this strategy did not work when facing multiple enemies at once. I actually kind of appreciated that this was an option because I was in it for the story, not so much for the gruling, unforgiving stealth-gameplay. You could still play it that way if you wish, I'm just acknowledging that there is an easy out for those of you that want it. Cons: 1) Difficulty Level - This could be a pro or a con depending on what you really want out of this game. Other reviews aren't lying when they say you can win this game by pretty much walking up to every enemy and just waving a knife in their face. The knife would still not work and I'd have to kill the guards with the bow and arrow and just pray that it wasn't one of those moments when the guards just refuse to die even after being hit in the face four times. However, I did not find any bugs that I would say were "game-breaking," just a few that were annoying.
