About
Murder on the Marine Express is a kinetic novel (linear, no choices) and the first installment of The Mysteries of Ranko Togawa series.
The St. Joachim Academy for elite girls booked the maiden voyage of the new Marine Express submarine train, which runs along the ocean floor from California all the way to the Japanese coast. The journey seems like the perfect opportunity to enjoy the beautiful underwater scenery, learn about marine biology and, ultimately, relax from regular school life. However, the idyllic travel turns into a nightmare when one of the teachers is found dead in his room. Who could have killed the most popular and beloved professor in the academy?
Ranko Togawa, accompanied by her friend Astrid, takes it upon herself to investigate the events and clear the name of the main suspect. Of course, it won't be that simple. As the number of victims grows, the possibility of facing a serial killer becomes more real and panic slowly sets in. Ranko will have to make the most of the time left to find out the truth and prevent the mysterious murderer from killing again, although not all the answers will be to her liking.
Learn the secrets hidden in the Marine Express and discover the culprit in this story of tragedy, surprises and lots of humor!

They really screw up the ending on this one. They also do a few things that really sour the mood, right at the end, when a detective story needs to be at its best. In the last 10 minutes of the game, the reader is subjected to two lectures on how men are such evil predators and women are in danger "just for being women." This is in the context of: A group of women accuse all men of being evil, and when the one man in the room starts to say that's not true, the protagonist yells at him to shut up. But this is written as a lecture to the reader, as if I need to be told any of this political garbage. It comes out of the blue and really makes me disgusted with the experience. Both of those lectures happen during the final revelation, when you learn the truth of what happened. The previous ~2.5 hours were fine and not full of lecturing to the player. It's really gross. Additionally making that ending worse: At the ending they reveal information learned off-screen that should have been done on-screen, then they resort to one asspull out of thin air. Also: 1) There are no choices in this VN 2) It's 2.7 hours long, just enough that you can't refund it on Steam if you don't like the ending. I got it on sale for $1 and I wish I could get that $1 back.
Sure bro, all men are predator. Except that it was ok.
Goodness gracious! Talk about a story that not only sucks you in... It makes you give a damn! It is utterly clear that the story/characters are given a damn about and the the English is super good! There is humor and fun sound effects sprinkled throughout it to make it all better. ^^ Oh and the mystery...! I had severe trouble putting this VN down. Something that's rather rare nowadays. Now clearly I can't comment on anything that'll spoil the mystery... Not even the twist nor the feelings. All I can say is that by the time I got to a certain part of the story... I had a rather strong reaction to it (not a negative one, mind you). Which doesn't tell you anything, but it shows that you do come to care about the characters/story itself. :> There are also few lessons here and there and you can have fun trying to figure out "who'd done it". As for me... I have a few things to reflect on... Good, good job! And looks like more mysteries will be heading this way soon, so...! I am definitely looking forward to 'em! Thank you, thank you! :D :> :) <3 <3 <3
MURDER ON THE MARINE EXPRESS is a briskly paced kinetic novel with fun characters and a nicely simmering plot that goes all sorts of places (the nature of justice as a way of healing old wounds, taking responsibility for your actions however unintended the consequences may be, underwater train is cool) in its three hour run time! I feel the lack of proper exploration and detective-ing is perhaps to the game's detriment (I wanna help solve the mystery too! or at least throw theories at the screen until something sticks! THE TRAIN BUTLER DID IT), but I still had fun reading Ranko Togawa's adventure and am looking forward to the next instalment!
Short straightforward murder mystery VN. The characters of this game are high schoolers. They are stuck on a underwater train and have to solve a murder. You just follow the story. There is no interaction with the world or when talking to other characters. This makes it debatable if it can be considered a game at all, but these types of "games" can still be enjoyable though. This is a type of game/genre I really enjoy, but Murder on Marine Express sadly did not live up to the expectations I had. I knew it was short and that you just followed the story without any interaction before I started playing, but I still thought I would enjoy it as a nice quick snack. Sadly this was not the case. There are too many things that don't work. I will start with some things that do work. The artstyle is good and the setting of the underwater train is cool. The music was serviceable. Now for the things that didn't work and the reasons why I will not recommend this game even if you usually enjoy games like this. The flow of the game is not consistent and the story itself is very cliche. Alot of the dialogue feels hollow and forced. There is also a large amount of the dialogue that is completely unrelated to the game. Ace Attorney has dialogue that isn't 100% connected to whatever case you are working on, but that is kept to a minimum and fits in. In Murder on the Marine Express there is alot of random stuff being talked about and in a short game like this it doesn't make any sense to waste time or space like that. The humor works sometimes, but not for the most part. There are some pretty heavy and serious themes in this game that are handled very hamfisted. At some parts it is down right preachy, which is a shame because I believe you can make a game with these themes without that happening. Things are also learned off-screen which is not good. There is very little chance to think and make connections on your own because major plot points are not revealed until they are explained right away. The main characters are inconsistent in how they act and handle the truth/being objective. They are ruling out stuff because someone is their friend, before there is any evidence to support ruling them out. This happens multiple times. I was looking forward to this game and the sequel, but now I feel like this was a waste of time (even if it only took about 2 hours). There is no need to play this game. Maybe the sequel will be better and that this was more of a prologue type game, but I probably won't take the chance.
Great game, just chock full of mystery and wonder. Ranko and Astrid really solved the secrets of the sea in this one! Who knows what well happen next on THE MARINE EXPRESS!
