Note: I received a free copy of this game from the developer with the intention for me to review it. So, first things first, A Pretty Odd Bunny is hard as nails stealth platformer that despite it's cute appearance, has some pretty violent aspects to it, making it a poor choice for a younger audience. Do not go into this expecting a kids' game, because your ass will promptly be handed to you by it's many perils. I really enjoyed how fresh this game felt. I've played a lot of platformers over the years, I would even say it's one of my favourite genres, but a lot of them can feel very samey or average. A Pretty Odd Bunny keeps the platforming gameplay fresh by adding in some stealth elements. You cannot attack your foes, you will need to find ways to avoid or sneak past them. There are other levels that change things up additionally by chasing you with a overflow of carrots, or making you ride in a minecart. This game has 4 worlds, with around 20 levels each, and 3 challenging bonus levels to be unlocked if you find all the bacon coins. It's a good length for this game especially considering how the difficulty ramps up, and if you are into the morbid humour then this platformer may be worth checking out.
Needs to go some more distance before it can validate you spending money on it
Pros -Visuals -Easy, thus would be great for newcomers to the genre Cons -Lacklustre options menu -Complete hiatus of a ‘Quit’ button -Sprite and hitbox inconsistencies -Easy, thus rookies of the genre won’t find it as interesting At the beginning of my journey with A Pretty Odd Bunny I thought it’ll be a casual platformer. Later on, I thought okay, it’s too easy for that even, maybe this is an entry level platformer, maybe even for kids. Well the gore bars it off the latter and I also wouldn’t recommend it for beginners as an entry, lest the unpolished, annoying experience would likely just keep them far away from the genre forever. If at one point the hitbox issues get ironed and a somewhat more straightforward approach to communication is put in place, this can end up being a newcomer friendly title, but until that point just the cute visuals alone definitely won’t warrant a recommendation other than avoid this one.
Sencillo y divertido
This silly game is so well made. Every level feels put together with though and it slowly builds difficulty. Levels are very easy to read. Every gameplay element is introduced first and when the game gets harder the player is ready. No difficulty spikes. Although some sections have issues with timed elements, if you're out of sync that might be a problem. There are some traces of mobile portness, like no option to close the game and mobile style menus, this is not a major issue. I played using PS4 controller and had no problems. One more level type of game.
I wish I could give an in-between score of this one because I really don't know how to feel about this one, but I guess I didn't hate it for most of the playtime. First off the trailer made me think there wold be more platforming in this game, it's very barebones it's a stealth-puzzle game, which is fine I like that. I liked the first world a lot - the challenge was appropriate to the length of the levels and it was interesting collecting the coins. The second and third worlds really should have had some checkpoints on the longer levels because it gets VERY annoying retraversing and redoing the puzzles back to where you lost, like up to 2 minutes of some levels time (you lose the instant you get spotted or hit an enemy) and the puzzles while usually not too difficult have a lot of moving parts so it's not just time you also have to pay attention to that. In addition it introduces one enemy (a boar) which is a bit of a reflex challenge, it's still a puzzle but you have to be very precise. But there were some good levels in it. The third world was just annoying. Again mostly long levels - even longer than the second world. Then it introduces an enemy (without any kind of tutorial) that is almost entirely reflex-based. It's a bird that you have to lead in one direction then avoid (usually jumping over or crossing in the other direction if possible) so it will continue off screen, but not too soon or it will change direction. I could never work out how to do those consistently so any levels with those were a dice toss for the attempt. This was ok during the levels where it's in the beginning, but some were toward the end. Then towards the end of the world it introduces a new mechanic - a search light. No tutorial no introduction. Everything I tried I failed. I had to look up a guide and what you have to do is way too difficult to manage with a controller, or probably keyboard too because you have to do very minute movements yet can't take time either. The 4th world was a remix of the first world levels with some added elements from the 2nd world in them - I liked it a lot and it's nice to have shorter levels again. So should you get it? I don't know the good parts are pretty fun or at least allright, the bad parts are terrible. And this features no kind of non-linear level design - if you can't beat a level that's it you can't finish the game which you know is a problem especially considering everything else. But as I said I guess for most of the playtime I didn't hate the game and some levels were indeed fun. Oh, and one really weird bug. So there's challenge rooms (which are timed things to collect I didn't find them interesting) that you get for collecting all the coins in the world. Except there's one extra coin in each world and if you get one more than the max the rooms won't unlock and you're screwed. I mentioned this in the discussion board but so far haven't gotten any response.
Bnuuy.
Not a bad game. Wish there was more an emphasis on platforming.
