The game is short but well done. Methodical and informative without being graphic. Respectful and also cozy, if that makes any sense. My husband died last year and this was a good tool to help work through some of the grief. I cried, in a good way, thinking of someone being there to treat him with such kindness and gentleness after he had passed. Maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but for me, it was good. And I think Jeff would have liked it too.
This is a low-poly, third person slice of life game detailing the daily grind of a funeral home employee, from washing the corpse to cutting it open to remove pacemakers before cremation to mingling with the mourners afterwards. Now, be aware that despite the amount of detail on display (and even more nitty gritty not to mention environmental and philosophical essays in your email inbox within the game) this isn't portrayed in a terribly granular fashion, and most of the cadaver based mini-games (yes, you read that correctly) are pretty click/drag to win, about on par with your average kid's iPad game. As long as the gameplay being pretty simplistic doesn't bother you, then the emotional depth and analysis of the funeral industry will probably fascinate you. It may not be complex but it has some real heart and deals with some pretty interesting issues. Recommended!

Its an interesting game but gets boring quickly, wish there was more dialouge or just general story instead of just repetitve action w/no change or development. For the price... 4.5/10.
I am posting simply because: I got to the point with the young man who wished to be cramated but because his will was not ''legal'' his family wanted a ''regular'' funeral... the choise was given and I decided I was not comfortable with it.... without anything the game just put me onto the screen with the body as if I have to start preping him for the regular funeral. before that I was actually emotionally invested and even cried for a bit but this was just so out of the...what the ♥♥♥♥... I have a feeling the game might have some bugs which should have been addressed by now, indie developer or not. If a player tells you they are uncomfortable aspeacially at a such a sensitive topic as is suicide... there is no room for error. Please whoever is more emphatic and emotionally charged should just maybe be careful when playing this.
Very short, so I recommend getting on sale. That said, it was an enjoyable and informative experience with interesting gameplay
A Mortician’s Tale explores an unusual and sensitive subject with care: the body preparation and funeral process in Western culture. You play as a newly graduated mortician starting her first job at a small funeral home. The gameplay centers on preparing the deceased, and the game introduces you to various funeral options—open casket, closed casket, and cremation—while walking you through the steps required for each. Body preparation ranges from simple tasks, like gently washing the body, to more involved procedures, such as embalming or removing a pacemaker prior to cremation. These interactions are presented respectfully and without graphic detail. The sequence of actions feels educational, almost like a guided lesson that demystifies the work of a mortician. After preparation, you attend the funeral service. Here, the main character can overhear conversations among the family, friends, and acquaintances of the deceased. These moments offer glimpses into the person’s life and the grieving process of those left behind. Once you’ve spoken to everyone and paid your respects, the service ends and the cycle continues with the next case. Your in-game computer acts as the central hub for information. You’ll receive emails from your boss with instructions for upcoming preparations, messages from a co-worker and your best friend, and even a newsletter from a Funeral Information Group. These emails add warmth and personality to the experience. There’s also a tougher version of Minesweeper tucked into the computer—worth exploring if you’re an achievement hunter (and worth looking up a guide for, because it’s deceptively tricky!). Overall, A Mortician’s Tale is a short but meaningful and informative experience. It can be completed in a single sitting, and achieving 100% completion takes about an hour. Replayability is limited, but the thoughtful storytelling and the insight you gain into funeral practices make it absolutely worth playing at least once.
a very short game, but a lovely and meditative one. i played this shortly after losing one of my favorite people in the world and it was honestly really healing as i was grappling with the reality of that loss.
I loved the messages of the game, as well as the insights into the business and profession. It's filled with information surrounding death rites and procedures, which I enjoyed learning more about, but for a text-heavy narative game there were multiple typos! Gameplay isn't revolutionary or particularly entertaining, but manages to keep the game cozy with it's repetitiveness and slow pace. It's peaceful and rewarding nonetheless.
