Introduction
A-Gents is a pixelated shooting game reminiscent of Metal Slug. At the time I write this, you have the choice of playing one of two characters, Emma or Shean, who play the same. There isn’t too much of a story to the game, though each level has their own objective that offers some bit of a story if you’re interested. The game currently only has two episodes with five levels each but more are promised to come.
Gameplay
You can play the game with either a game controller or your keyboard and mouse. You can also play alone or with a friend locally. The game is pretty simple, you walk around and shoot down enemies and objects while clearing mission objectives and making it to the end of a level. There are a variety of guns to be used, or you can use a knife. You also have grenades which I found extremely useful as well dynamite to do heavy duty damage. A noted feature is that you can aim your gun 360 degrees, apparently before this update you could only aim in four directions though I haven’t played it that way.
Graphics/Audio
The game is fully pixelated so don’t expect too much in the graphics department. You can choose from two outfit choices for your character. Like the choice of characters, this is solely cosmetic and their tiny pixels make it hard to see the clothes. However, I did like the retro feel of the graphics, while nothing fancy they still look good with nice colors and great locations. The music is also decent though not too memorable. It’s some basic rough sounding combat music so the tunes do fit the stages while you run around shooting baddies.
Pros
+ Great retro feel. + A variety of weapons to choose from. + Great to play with a friend. + Three levels of difficulty. + Each level gets increasingly longer adding new challenges. + Steam achievements and trading cards.
Cons
- Though you can play solo, it’s harder and not as enjoyable as playing with someone else. - Currently the price does not match the amount of content the game offers.
Final Thoughts
I hope to see more from A-Gents, I enjoyed playing this game and have hopes that it will keep getting better since the developers do interact with the community. I hope the project is completed and recommend this game. If you’re unsure about investing quite yet then keep an eye out for further updates to the game. I feel that when all the episodes are released that it will be even more fun.
Interesting game. It features retro graphics and a variety of characters and weapons. The action is pretty tense, so you have to "work hard" for the most of the level. My favourite thing are the bombs which you can throw everywhere. The music is not retro, it's very "pumping" and adds to the overall atmosphere.
Basic top down shooter that works. Play only if you're craving for these type of games.
I liked this game from the first minute. Its basically like a twin stick cannon fodder. It has local 2 player coop which is fun and the fact that there is friendly fire makes it a challenge. Finished all the available levels and very much looking forward to "TBA" levels. A BIG thumbs up!
Great time killer and fun game to play with a friend! I downloaded this game one night with my friends because we were to drunk to play cod or other games so we downloaded this. It's nostalgic (reminds me a bit metal slug) and entertaining enough to recommend this game to players who want some time killer with friends! PS Thanks for releasing on Linux as well guys! 8/10
I have no idea why this game has as high an aggregate score as it does - I can find *no* redeeming qualities to mention in a review, nor would I ever recommend this game to anyone for any reason other than idling cards. An absolute chore to get through, and I only did so because I'm trying to force myself to play through more of my library to completion. - Forgettable art, and even more forgettable music that you'll probably just turn off after the first five minutes. - Character stats do absolutely nothing; all four "versions" of the characters play exactly the same. - Mission objectives consist mainly of "cross the map" and most levels are easily done in less than 60 seconds. - The minimap is obtuse, often doesn't display objective markers, and sometimes doesn't display at all. - Enemy spawns seem completely random in placement and most maps are astonishingly bare. - The only map setpieces that function are turrets. Everything else will just catch fire and explode if you shoot it. - The guns are barely distinguishable from each other. - I'm not even sure if the difficulty settings do anything. Etc., etc., etc. Why did I make myself do this?
A-Gents is a top-down shooter, which features variety of weapons and enemies, next-gen robots and an occasional soccer ball. But I don't want to be Dr Spoiler more than I have to :) There are 10 levels, split in two episodes, and developers promised up to six episodes. The hand grenades are the strangest thing so far, they bounce off anything, you can throw them over trees, shoot them away, so they are very useful, but also very unpredictable. Some things in menu (especially level select and briefing) could be designed better, because they are a bit "technical" comparing to the rest of the game design which is vibrant and colorful. Overall 7.5-8 out of 10 (depending on future levels and updates).
Love the pixel graphics this game has to offer. Game gets into intese action really quick and with local coop made it EVEN BETTER! Just from playing the game, you can tell the devs took their time working on the game along with the story and interface.Only thing i wish the game had to offer is online multiplayer. Pros Local coop Intense action 3 episodes with many levels Steam trading cards and achievements Controller support Cons No online modes
Simple and fun game that can be played for a few minutes to an hour. The levels are unique and fun, with cool music to get you pumped. The graphics are great, especially the satisfying kill animation. The characters and weapons you get are okay-ish but can be improved, since both the characters and weapons just play alike. Other than that, fun game.
