Solid city builder, especially if you are a dwarf yourself :)
I really love digging out tunnels in A Game of Dwarves, setting up little dwarven rooms, and watching your underground settlement grow across multiple vertical layers. I lost a few evenings to it without meaning to, which says something. That said, the game is clearly unfinished: dwarves stumble on staircases, the AI is borderline lobotomized, some Steam achievements are permanently broken due to level bugs, and the challenge basically evaporates once you're even slightly established. It's best approached as a relaxed sandbox dollhouse rather than any kind of strategy game — if you go in expecting Dungeon Keeper or Dwarf Fortress depth, you'll be disappointed fast. Grab it on a deep sale if the idea of decorating a cozy underground fort sounds appealing, but go in with low expectations.
The tutorial sucks. It cites things that are buried in menus. Instead of opening up options as you progress, like most tutorials, they just throw a bunch of stuff you don't need at the start and then want you to dig thru it all. Might as well just go to the first level. The controls suck. How do i rotate anything? No clue. can't build anything how or where i want it because i have absolutely no clue how to rotate the object I'm trying to place. Even how it pauses things automatically when i go to play something., its just annoying that i need to mash the space bar to keep the game going when i'm just messing around trying to place stuff. After spending an hour on it, i feel no desire to play it and feel I've progressed no where. Nothing about this game has hooked me or is unique in such a way for me to care to play it further. Given the age of the game, this one is getting thrown in the retired bin.
This is an interesting game, played it on a whim when I picked a random game from my library to try out and I enjoyed it. With that being said, I think whether you might enjoy it highly depends. If you're the type to like anything with dwarves and quirky games, then Id say you might have a good time. Although It clearly has issues. First and foremost every mission I found myself doing the exact same thing. Start, build log plants, speed up game for 2 hours selling log plants until I could afford more military and be able to steam roll my way through the game. I cant see the game being playable in any other way. If you open the wrong room and you arent strong enough to win against the enemies, then you just lose the game with no second chances. Traps are worthless in every way possible and there isent much strats other then having more military might then the enemy. Assuming your military actually engages the enemy because sometimes youll have one unit cross the map to take on a room full of orcs and other times they wont enter the next room despite being 20 units strong and right next to a boss. The missions take a long time to complete, every single mission you are starting from scratch and researching everything and upgrading troops. Basically it was an hour of prep for an hour of gameplay. Most of that prep was standing around speeding things up. While I understand it, its basically just super daunting every time I go in to a mission. Decorations are about as meaningless as traps. Same as above, every mission resets so if you built out a really nice base, its gone the moment the mission is over. A BIG complaint I had was that there was no way to fill in blocks that you mined. You could use a wood block but it cost 200!!! wood per block. Why is there not a free dirt option that doesent become a new target for enemies who are walking by? Imagine accidentally mining a block next to your beautiful throne room, and having no option other then waiting 5 minutes for enough wood to be farmed to fill it back up. Biggest pet peeve. There were bugs and issues, honestly I feel like if your looking at the game and it already sparks your interest then it might be worth it to you. I will say that I enjoyed the game, despite the mission length and monotony I was excited to keep opening the game and playing more. Just remember its a flawed game with its own little highlights. (Dlc value is null, insane they werent in the base game)
It's a cute resource management / city builder game. Always come aback to it.
Fun Game to pass time. i give a 4/5
