A Demon's Game - Episode 1 is an atmospheric indie horror experience that prioritizes tension, mood, and narrative choice over fast-paced action or spectacle. Developed by RP Studios and published by Conglomerate 5, the game sets out to tell a personal and unsettling story through exploration-heavy gameplay and psychological horror elements. From the beginning, it is clear that the developers aim to create a slow-burning sense of dread, relying on environmental storytelling and sound design rather than frequent jump scares to keep players on edge. The story follows Daniel, an ordinary man whose life has been irrevocably broken by loss, driving him to confront forces that lie beyond human understanding. His journey is framed not as a heroic quest, but as a desperate descent into increasingly disturbing spaces, guided by grief, guilt, and the hope of reclaiming what was taken from him. While the premise of a man venturing into darkness to save a loved one is familiar, A Demon's Game grounds this setup in a more personal tone, making the horror feel intimate rather than purely supernatural. The narrative unfolds gradually, rewarding players who pay attention to environmental clues, scattered lore, and subtle story beats hidden throughout the world. Atmosphere is the game’s strongest asset. Environments such as abandoned industrial areas, shadow-filled corridors, and oppressive sewer systems are designed to feel claustrophobic and disorienting. Lighting is used sparingly, often forcing players to rely on limited visibility and sound cues to navigate safely. The audio design plays a crucial role in building tension, with distant noises, unsettling ambience, and sudden silences that suggest unseen threats nearby. Rather than constantly confronting the player with enemies, the game often allows fear to emerge from anticipation, creating a sense that danger could appear at any moment. Gameplay centers on exploration, navigation, and light puzzle-solving. Players spend much of their time moving through maze-like environments, searching for keys, switches, or alternative routes while avoiding hazards and making decisions that influence the story’s direction. The inclusion of multiple endings based on player choices adds weight to exploration and interaction, encouraging careful consideration of actions rather than reckless progress. However, the mechanical depth remains fairly limited, with puzzles serving more as pacing tools than complex challenges. This keeps the focus firmly on atmosphere and narrative, though it may feel underwhelming for players seeking more involved gameplay systems. One of the game’s more divisive aspects is its pacing. Early sections are effective at building mystery and unease, but as the episode progresses, environments can begin to feel repetitive, particularly in areas that reuse similar layouts and visual themes. Long stretches of traversal without significant narrative development can dilute tension, and mistakes such as falling into hazards or failing stealth sections may result in repeated segments that feel more frustrating than frightening. These issues do not negate the game’s strengths, but they do highlight the limitations of its episodic scope and budget. Despite these shortcomings, A Demon's Game - Episode 1 has been received positively by players who value atmosphere and story over mechanical complexity. Many appreciate the game’s restraint, its avoidance of cheap horror tactics, and its willingness to let unease build slowly. The branching narrative and multiple endings provide incentive to replay the episode, particularly for those curious about uncovering every outcome and piece of lore hidden within the world. Overall, A Demon's Game - Episode 1 stands as a solid example of indie psychological horror driven by mood and narrative ambition. While it struggles at times with repetition and uneven pacing, its commitment to atmosphere, personal storytelling, and player choice gives it a distinct identity. For players who enjoy slow, immersive horror experiences that emphasize exploration and emotional weight rather than constant action, this first episode offers a tense and intriguing journey into darkness, setting a foundation that hints at deeper horrors yet to come. Clever games curator review: 4/10 A highly repetitive horror game, where you navigate a claustrophobic sewer system, avoiding a monster by sneaking around in the dark and finding clues and key objects in order to unlock the exit to the next level. Hey, guess what, the next level looks just like the current level but with a slightly different arrangement. Puzzles are very simple, such as finding a piece of paper with a key code on it, or flipping a switch so that you can then backtrack to go through a door that was previously locked. The levels are mildly maze-like, and that is the aspect I enjoyed the most: Figuring out how to go somewhere that I had not been before on a strong hunch that there would be a switch or other key object that would then allow me to escape. What I really didn’t enjoy is that when you make a mistake you restart the level. Here a mistake could mean falling into the sewage, or not running at your very top speed and being caught by the lurking monster. Admittedly the levels are fairly small, but with so little change in between them I absolutely have no interest in also playing the same level over and over again. The other irritating aspect is that you have a flashlight but an absurdly short amount of battery life. So this game can only really be played at night in a dark room so that you can have any hope of navigating the sewers without turning on your flashlight. Not only is the game itself highly repetitive, but it’s not that different from a lot of other horror games released in that era. I guess if you really like this sort of game maybe it would be OK, as it can be had very cheaply. no gamepad support but the steam input defaults were reasonable.
