Very entertaining Galaxian clone updated with nice graphics, sounds, and more interesting attack patterns.

🤔Overall Impressions🤔

A Blast From The Past is an enjoyable Galaxian clone which has been updated in every sense. It looks nice, sounds great and has many new enemies with different attack patterns. There are bonus rounds between sections and three difficulty levels which get harder as you progress. Compete against your own high scores, or try working your way up the online leaderboards on the harder difficulty settings. If you enjoy casual arcade shooters then this is definitely worth checking out.

🕹️Gameplay🕹️

🎬Gameplay Video🎬
https://youtu.be/QKmjTsRkjzw The game play video will show you what to expect. Perhaps you could subscribe to my channel if you find it helpful. 😏 A Blast from the Past is a retro, casual, arcade shooter with waves of enemies who form a fleet and break off to try and shoot you or crash into your ship. Your ship can only navigate horizontally, and is unable to travel up and down the screen, and it has quite a measly gun pattern with only two bullets allowed to fire at any one time. You can acquire upgrades which increase the amount of fire, but don’t expect anything powerful. The lack of fire power means you have to be more careful when you shoot, as you can only fire again once that bullet has gone off the screen or hits an enemy. This style rewards accuracy and if you do hit enemies regularly, then gun fire is quite rapid, although missing an enemy can really hurt you when you’re trying to shoot but cannot because you have used up all your fire power. Collecting stars from fallen enemies gives you temporary immunity from fire, and you can even collide into spiraling enemies and destroy them with your shield. This comes in very handy when you are trying to avoid a mixture of gun fire and enemy ships hurtling towards you. There are quite a vast array of enemies including ones which need two hits to defeat, and all have different attack patterns. Towards the end of a round, special enemies like snakes and other boss type fighters appear and are much harder to defeat. Every so often you are taken to a bonus round where you shoot enemies in a set pattern. The more you kill, the more bonus you receive. It is quite difficult on the harder difficulty settings, and things heat up almost immediately, whereas playing casual difficulties will allow you to see the full array of enemies, bonus levels, and let you play for a dozen levels or so before getting difficult. Difficulty levels should cater for everyone. The last difficulty is locked however, and I’m not sure what the parameters are for unlocking it. If you want to compete on the online leaderboard you will need to play on the tournament mode, but any difficulty level will provide a high score for you to beat and record for future tries.
🍳Conclusion🍳

A Blast From the Past is an entertaining and fun shooter firmly placed within a retro environment, and is just a casual shooter without any thrills. Even with its simplistic game play, it can get very difficult, and gets very tense and exciting as you dodge enemy fire whilst also avoiding enemies flying towards you in a tight environment. If you enjoy casual, retro shooters then this is an easy recommend. This game belongs in an arcade cabinet! Pickup and play arcade blasting action, the difficulty curve is just about perfect! Incredible super smooth graphics and gameplay... I can't believe this runs at 120hz on my Mac! Hats off to the team, this game is incredible. What a bargain. Be warned though, this game is addictive... You will be trying to beat your hi-score every time you play!
My impressions video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IozL0d3He8 A Blast from the Past is essentially the new Galaga that Bandai Namco isn't giving us and it offers a great presentation and package for a small price. If you know Galaga, you largely know how this plays. If not, a quick glance at my video or a trailer will lay it out for you. While it doesn't share everything with its inspiration (personally, I miss the twin ship capture mechanic), it plays very well and looks great. There are a ton of levels, many of which offer up their own gameplay twists, and there are additional modes available, with more on the way. There are even online leaderboards, something rarely seen in a game with this price point. This title seems to have sadly slipped under most people's radar, but if you like shmups and especially if you like Galaga, don't skip this one! There's a demo so you can try it to make sure but as a fan of the original, I think this is a great modernization.
Loving this, If you like Galaxian/Galaga 88 this is a great modern remake! The graphics and sound are excellent and it plays like a real old school shooter!
Fun game, but I feel like there should be an option to have more than 2 shots or to speed up the travel of the two shots. My mind wants to approach this like Galaga, which has fast bullets, and I can mash the fire button. Enable that mode, and this game would be perfect.
If this game had been made when Galaga and Galaxian were THIS would be the one you remember. A truly well polished well done retro game that looks and plays superbly like you imagine it would. It is literal peanuts in cost and worth twice the asking price. Addiction here we come then. Well done dev/s a winner. Hoping this is one of many more games to come. 10/10 a very rare 'what it says is what it does score.
Saw the Parallax video about it today and had to come check it out for myself. I'm a huge fan of the old school game that this is inspired by, and they nailed it! So much fun. Small changes to modernize it, but it works- I do miss the ability to have a ship captured and try to get it back for the bonus shooting, but the other changes (power-ups etc) seem to make up for it. Will be playing this a LOT when I just need to get a quick gaming fix! Well done!
This game needs to exist in an arcade cabinet. This is sweet as a nut! and for £4.99, definitely worth it!
