88 Heroes is a pretty fun platformer. Pick it up on sale, it's not worth the asking price
This game has its charm in its presentation and gimmicks, but that's all it has. While the gimmick is 88 different characters with powers bordering on useful to useless, the rest of the game is tedious and frustrating. Lets start with the most abhorrent problem, the screen is cluttered by an overlay of the main villain watching the characters move about the level. This is charming but ultimately makes it hard to see, especially since they animated the villain's goons running in the foreground BLOCKING the screen, with rare instances of one tripping and unplugging the monitor, leaving you completely blind. There is no option to remove this, but there should of been an option to at least reduce its size a bit. The characters are mostly references with a few original ones sprinkled in, the DLC also adds a few extra from other titles. The frustrating thing is they relied more on the joke of the characters than to make functional characters. A not insignificant amount of characters are either unplayable or inconsistent. Each character has their own physics and so you cannot get comfortable with how a single character plays, as they all are different sizes, different speeds, different jump heights(or lack of thereof) or in the case of El Delayo, literally have intentional input delay. Now this would be fine if you could take your time and avoid each obstacle carefully, but unfortunately you have a time limit of 88 seconds per level, with 88 minutes for the entire game. That means if you waste too much time and too many characters during the playthrough, you will lose. It is actually optimal to just instantly kill characters if you feel they can't feasibly beat a particular level, as it is completely random which character you get each level. Due to this RNG you might just be stuck at a certain level and be given no choice but to restart. Now the game does have a way to bring back a character, with coins scattered about you can get 88 of them and bring back 1 of a random 3 selected dead character. Except it is just more optimal to ignore the coins for the most part, as they are usually in more dangerous areas and risk killing a more reliable character. When you are down to your last character and die, the only option is to retry at that last character. At that point you ultimately need to reset as progress will grind to a halt. Game is okay for the gimmicks for a few minutes, But the actual gameplay needed to be filled out more.
I love this game but it is absolutely terrible. This game has 1 strong element that's seemingly universally agreed on: The characters. The references are funny, their design looks great, and the different moves and gimmicks they have are really fun. There's clearly a lot of creativity and humour on display here in the character design. There are characters who can teleport, go invisible, create platforms for themselves, fly around, stop time, invert your controls. destroy the level and make new pathways. I specifically remember a hero called "El Delayo" who literally delayed all of my keyboard inputs and played like I was lagging. It was weird to get used to and a tad frustrating but overall it made the character memorable and unique. Sadly, this game lacks anything other than unique heroes. In fact, "88 heroes" is probably one of the most accurate video game titles ever. Because that's all this game is. You would have the same fun with these characters that you would in a random blank scene in unity fighting generic red sqaures. This isn't so much a game as it is 88 video game characters being prototyped. The level design in this game is straight up worse than most flash games out there. It truly is awful. I would be willing to accept the fact that the levels look ugly as sin if they played well but they don't. Problem 1) Enemies are all useless and never require any thoughtful use of the characters. Remember all those cool powers I mentioned? Most of them aren't relevant. Enemies all have 1 HP and do infinite damage, so you either oneshot them with your characters' attack (if they have one) or you mess up and die to them. This is the equivalent to booting up smash bros ultimate, seeing that you have 70+ characters to choose from and only being able to ever fight the training mode sandbag. Problem 2) The hazards are awful in this game. I've played this game for a good while now and got a feel for all the traps. I can avoid them. That doesn't make the way they are implemented any less frustrating. Lazer traps are "on" for far too long and, like everything in this game, oneshot you. I don't understand this decision, as it further annoys players and makes things like misalinged hittboxes (paticularly on spikes) stick out REALLY hard. Shooting or "zapping" traps don't have an "im about to shoot" telegraph. Combine that with their large offensive phase and you'll end up in a situation where it takes you 3 or 4 characters to just drop down a hole 2 feet tall unless you time it perfectly. These two problems combine to make levels that are just straight up bad. And I do genuinely mean bad. These levels aren't just mediocre. They suck. I'm going to confidently say that I don't believe for a second that all 88 levels were playtested for any length of time other than to see that they don't literally crash the game on loading. The only fun part about playing the levels was occasionally breaking them by teleporting to the exit or breaking your way there. What's sad is that someone clearly tried to make these levels good. There are alternate paths that can be taken under certain circumstances (sometimes), and coins to collect are placed in spots to dare the player to get close to traps. However, even systems like these don't properly work. The alternate paths are alternate but just as boring, and they themselves are few and far between in the first lace. And the coins system requires a player to spend 88 coins to revive a fallen hero-something that takes you putting your current hero in danger 11 times in a row. I don't think I need to explain why that isn't a good design choice. Now for a quickfire of things that are annoying but aren't as annoying as what I've mentioned: The boss sucks. It's really really really really really boring. And you fight him multiple times in the same linear and boring way. The game doesn't take up the full screen. Instead, you see the game through the villains CCTV camera. This looks awful. This also means that characters in the villains lair can literally get up and walk in front of the screen. I rarely curse, but seriously, what the actual ♥♥♥♥. Someone had to create assets and program in a feature of someone occasionally blocking your view. Do you enjoy it when someone stands in front of the TV? No, but you're getting that anyway for some reason. The time limit is incredibly pointless and is something no one will enjoy. I can see liking 88 seconds per level, but the devs clearly did not understand the implications of what an 88 minute timer means. It means that someone can literally play up until level 87 with no deaths and fail by a second and they will have literally wasted almost an hour and a half of their life accomplishing nothing. In a game that forces you to be precise when dealing with traps, this is a joke. I would have liked to see what this game would be like with no stupid screen stuff, 10-20 well designed levels, 1 boss fight and no time limit. I truly believe that (especially at this price tag) the game would have had the potential to be incredibly popular. I understand this review may come off as overly harsh and I expect that this game is made by devs simply beginning their journey. Despite my criticism, there ARE good parts to this game. That is why I like it and will probably keep playing it. Despite that, I cannot recommend this game. Is it worth the price? I paid 3 pounds for it on sale, so me for it probably is. It's currently 13 when not on sale though. I wouldn't pick this up for anything above a fiver. 88 heroes is, without a doubt, the best worst game I have ever played.
A brutally hard plattformer where you get 88 lives but they are each a different wacky character. Most have a gimmick which either helps or hinders your gameplay. Very few are OP as hell. This is only recommended for players which like a challenge and are okay if they favorite character will die early. Its kind of the ADD plattform game.
it works pretty good on gamepad! its awesome funny! its well done overall! so i quess you do the 88 levels without loosing all the 88 heroes , and the game is won! stupid as i am , that would take some time! Can only recommend this game! get it on sale maybe ! if ya got the extra money just get it straight! definately gonna spend some time on this and try get my 88 levels done!
