8-Bit Adventures 2

Let me just start off by saying what a fantastic sequel this is. I already enjoyed 8BA1 a lot for its writing, but it definitely shows and feels its age. With 8-Bit Adventures 2 everything feels a lot fresher and newer - not simply because it [i]is[/i] those things but because it's just all around a superior product. I could easily see myself going back to this in a couple years and it feeling just as solid to play as it did now. That isn't me trying to disparage the original game like Peter Molyneux throwing Fable 2 under the bus to promote Fable 3, I was that impressed with the improvements between games. I also want to say that while you don't [i]need[/i] to have played the first game to enjoy the second one, it certainly made me feel a much deeper connection with the returning characters and the world itself. Being able to say "I remember this person!" when entering a town or recalling the adventure where the warrior, thief, and mage all met and the tribulations they went through. True sequels to games are [b]rare[/b], and even when they happen it's 100 apart or has little to do with the previous game. About the only other noteworthy JRPGs to do this are the Trails games. There's a fair amount of mechanics the game introduces at a steady pace, with a tutorial help message you can easily revisit in the menu at any time. Enemies are always visible on the map, so no random battles. However, if you wanna grind (like me) then just ask the friendly save point when you see 'em and ask to revive enemies! Or else you can just return to the world map and re-enter. Any time an enemy has a [i]new[/i] item for you to steal, there is a very helpful asterisk - this * thing - by their name. Basically, there's plenty of helpful features that improve the game's quality of life. You can even set your party to *not* change between battles! If you swap characters in and out - a very useful feature in itself - after the battle is over it'll return to your starting party! I loved this [i]so[/i] much. There are a couple exceptions where it doesn't work, but that's plot stuff so don't sweat it. After the game is over, and trust me it's pretty meaty already, there's free post-game DLC that you can do. It's pretty challenging, so if you found the game too easy somehow then the bonus bosses will probably give you something to chew on! All in all, it's a really amazing game that I enjoyed thoroughly. I sincerely hope that they'll do a third one someday.

I am ashamed to say this, I did pirate this game for a little bit, but I loved it so much, I had to buy it, that is why I have so little hours here. This game is amazingly fun and simple, love me some old school pixel art, and don't get me started on the OST. I can't say much without spoiling it besides what is in the description, but it's worth a shot for anyone who likes turn based games, I don't and I really liked it, so :)

A true retro RPG with modern QOL improvements. Don't let the bad name fool you this game has a great story, good combat and the graphics and music are a great callback to the NES era. My one complaint about the game is sometimes the dialog drags on. I love all the world building through dialog but sometimes they will throw out 2 minutes of dialog for something that could've been a single line of text. Other than that a fantastic game and any retro turn based fan should not miss this one.

I wanted to give this a chance because of the nostalgia for me, but its like they made a 8-bit game with less quality of life things that RPGs in the 2020s should have even if its 8 bit. I only give it a thumbs up because that style was my jam when I was a kid, so if they make another one, maybe they can stop limiting themselves to 8 bit User Interface ideas...

Better than the original in every way. Still playing this one, but the improvements are immediately apparent - deeper combat, better pacing, and an even more engaging story. The developer clearly listens to feedback and keeps leveling up.
