WT(ever-lovin')F! The graphics are pretty, the music is nice, but almost everything else is absolute poop! No maps or guides or waypoints to show where the heck you're supposed to go, and weird AF mechanism of 'weaving' that seems to sew where IT wants. I'm too baffled to continue with my ".4 hours" of play time.
No. Weaving Tides is a vanilla, uninteresting game. It's a mechanic looking for fun. While the first level is interesting because you're still figuring out how the mechanics work and how much fun you can have with it (spoiler alert - not a lot), you quickly lose interest in the repetitive gameplay and boring lore that really never have time to develop and annoying/frustrating/obtuse puzzles. Whoever thought it would be "fun" to have a health meter bar and combat, clearly haven't played through the result. I usually tend to stick a long time with puzzle games with solid mechanics, but I could not wait to finish this game, uninstall it, and never look at it again. Visually, it has no flaws but also nothing that stands out. Audio-wise it's also safe, nothing crazy but also nothing remarkable. It's on the gameplay that it really suffers and ultimately leads to being not recommended.
I really love this game, but I also hate it so much. The art, weaving mechanic, characters, exploration & collectibles - all exceptional. But the combat is way too hard for a seemingly cozy game like this. Especially the multi-stage, not-gonna-tell-you-the-rules boss fights. I image this is what Dark Souls feels like. Please, at least add a skip button for the bosses. I want to see this story through.
I'm assuming that based on achievements I'm around half way through the game and in general.... I'd recommend the game. I just got it tonight in a Fanatical bundle and instantly wanted it when I saw it because I love the style of the game and the unique looking gameplay. I'm a crafter and I love the very rare finds I can get in gaming where there is something with a crafty feel to it. Let's get the negatives out of the way first. ----I'm not a fan of the controls. The controls feel very janky as I've seen a few other people say. I really wish there was a way to remap the controls because I just don't like them. It took me way to long to be able to get used to the controls and be able to do things effectively. Three hours in and my left hand is cramping SO BAD. Some of that could have been helped if I used the right side shift or control instead of the right, but it just doesn't come naturally to me to use the right side of the keyboard much. Being able to play one handed is nice, but I really wish I could remap a few of the keys to other buttons on the left side of my keyboard. Be seriously... my left hand is killing me. ---- This game is not difficult by any means. That being said the game also does VERY little in the way of explaining things to you. For instance. There is a large flower that you can find that produces a unique very large ribbon that you have to take to a specific ring. Simple enough concept, but if something happens (like you needing to attack something) that causes that big ribbon to stop you can't pick it back up again. I couldn't figure out how to pick it up so I just kept leaving an area and coming back because the loading screen made it reset. Turns out, I found out on accident, you can dash at the large flower and that resets it. The game never explains this. What the flower DOES is not taught through dialogue, but through just observing the world. Which is fine, but if you aren't going to make the flower auto reset when the player drops the ribbon... at least tell us how to reset it. This is far from the only example. It took me, admittedly, way to long to realize that when there are rings on the ground attached to statues that you are supposed to grab them, pull, and then tie to them to the ground where there is a weave. A simple text box from Twill or Kilimi saying something simple about pulling and tying it down would have been nice. We do get a text box from Twill about being able to pull moles away, but nothing about tying them down. So in one puzzle area I kept pulling away the moles, not realizing for again... way too long... that I was meant to pull them away and tie them down like other enemies. ---- The above two are my only major problems with the game. Otherwise a smaller complaint is that so far, getting to the second area, it doesn't feel like the weaving mechanic of the game is actually used all that much. The main thing you do with is is weave holes in the world closed and tie up enemies with your ribbon that... somehow kills them? I kinda went into this game thinking that there would be more focus on having to make patterns and stuff. So far I've barely even had to use any of my special stitching abilities. There ARE places where you are weaving patterns in areas where there are several rings all over the floor and you have to weave a certain pattern and those are really fun. It feels like they are few and far between though and so far I'm really wishing there was more of that. But I am only 3 hours in and much of that was trying to just figure out what to do so this very well may change the further into the game that I get. ---- Forgot one.... WHY ISN'T THERE A MAP??? There have been a couple times so far where I really wish there was some kind of map where I could see where something was as there have been a couple times when I passed an area because I wasn't sure what to do with it and then spent way too long trying to get back to it because I didn't remember where it was. Okay! Now onto the good! ---- The overall design of this game is amazing. The concept of weaving through fabric, like I said before, is what grabbed me. However the artistic design of the game is GORGEOUS! The character sprites are beautifully drawn and I love looking at them. There are many characters so far that I wish I could have a physical print of. Just to have it and look at whenever I want because I love the character designs so much. ---- The music is very fun and soothing and though repeative has not yet gotten grating or anything. It's just kinda chill vibes and I'm enjoying it. Definitely a soundtrack I'm going to pick up in the future. ---- Weaving in and out of the world is pretty fun once you get a handle on the controls. It was super frustrating at first because of controls, but once I got the hang of it I've been having fun weaving in and out of the world. When I'm in an area that doesn't wind up confusing me cause I have no idea what to do. I have a decent amount of fun just going in and out of things. The weaving puzzles are also pretty fun for me. Some of them have been really easy and others have been a smidge more difficult. Nothing outlandish or stupidly hard yet. Just... fun to do. Also there's a weird satisfaction with fixing the holes in the weave of the world. I kinda wish there was more of this too. ---- The story isn't anything super unique yet, but it's not a bad one. You play as Tass a clearly human child living in a world of moth people. Hilariously there is a scene where you find out that Tass didn't fully realize they WEREN'T a moth despite looking nothing like any of the other characters. Tass seems to have been raised by Kilim, a weaver, as he calls him Dad a lot. You find out that weavers are creators that keep the world's structure in tact. Very close to the beginning of the game you find out that Tass's biological parents could be out there somewhere and Tass sets out to find those parents. There is also this over hanging situation of these dark weavers that we see at the beginning of the game. Again. Not the most original story idea, but it is still a decent one so far. ---- The personalities of the characters so far are really good though. I absolutely adore Twill. She is hands down my favorite character. She cracked me up the second I met her when she notices that Tass isn't a moth and says "Hey, you're weird looking. I like your feet." And that sentence made me cackle because it was just so out of left field, but really sets the tone for the character. Overall opinion. Setting aside the controls. Once you get the hang of this game it's a really beautiful game with a unique mechanic that you can generally sit down and just vibe and relax with. There will be times you are frustrated because the game doesn't explain something. However if you don't go into this game expecting a super hard puzzle game you'll have a good time with this title. So far I'm not 100% sold on the price. I got mine in a Fanatical bundle and it is well worth what I paid for it there. If I had purchased it on steam I think around $15-$20 would be the price I would have paid for it and not felt disappointed in my money spent ONLY because it is about a 10-12 hour play. So I would grab it on a little bit of a sale. Edit: I wanted to add that when I speak on the controls I AM speaking keyboard controls. Not controller. Also, having now completed the game. I am a bit torn. The game is very frustrating to play at times, but I do feel my opinion stands that the game is overall a good game and worth a play. The story did take a bit of a turn that I didn't expect, but I am disappointed that the end is very much an open end. Leaving me with many questions I do hope this game gets a sequel. A note for completionists. This game is equal parts nightmare and fun as there are almost no guides for this game online. It's been frustrating, but kinda fun to have no guides to rely on.
This game has one of the most gorgeous looking world made from ribbins filled with some intresting lore, characters and beatiful music. I quite enjoyed exploring the world fighting a lot of diffrent enemies and the bosses which had pretty cool designs! The collectibles were quite fun to get some had intresting puzzles and some were quite hidden that i didn't aquire during my playtrouth. Dragons in this game had one of my favorite dragon designs i saw while playing a game. Tho i admit sometimes i had to use some hints to go trouth a few puzzles since i couldn't quite well understand how to do it(mainly the ribbon flower). But non the less i enjoyed this game and it has some replaybality since there is a playground where you could create your own creations with the ribbens in the game hehe. Im also rating this game 10/10!
A short, adorable game about petting dragons, stitching the world together (with the dragons) to fix it and/or solve puzzles and/or defeat enemies, and overcoming obstacles along with your found family (the dragons, and also moths). Unusual but engaging game mechanics; puzzles that aren't ultimately difficult but aren't always intuitive (made more difficult by the fact that the game is obscure enough to make finding hints and/or walkthroughs a challenge); and a massive, massive Act 4 difficulty spike. Might be best enjoyed on sale, unless you're a fan of dragons and/or novel game mechanics. The main sewing gimmick was oddly satisfying, though sometimes less precise than I'd have liked; it also had some interesting design with being able to arbitrarily travel over or under the map, and a good number of the puzzles involved using that to traverse obstacles. Overall, I do not regret my time spent with the game (squeeing over the dragons).
Unique puzzle game with pleasing visual style. I beat the first level (and boss fight!) after an hour and found myself genuinely having fun.
3.8/10 was really looking forward to this game + art style + cool one of a kind game play + puzzles - hardly any sewing the ground back together - god awful combat the amount of times im trying to defeat one tiny guy that just wont die.... - god awful boss fights i move at the speed of pudding well the boss plows me down full speed every time. i know where i need to be to trigger the damage phase but most of the time i have no way to reach it in time before the boss runs off. only took me 2 tries to beat the boss. figured out its pattern on the 1st try. 2nd try took me 17 minutes of doing the same ♥♥♥♥ over and over until i got lucky and it spawned in a place i could make it to - all around janky edges. you get stuck on things and places all the time - 25$ its over priced for about 5 - 6 hours of gameplay - no map - no way points removed combat from this game and just make it about sewing the world back together with puzzles could also toss in local co-op or a vs game mode that would be fun
