About
It’s the year 197X…
A mysterious force calling itself the Cosmic Demon Empire suddenly launched an assault on Earth, commanding an army of colossal beast-shaped war machines known as the Space Beasts. Meanwhile, at a certain top-secret Space Robot Laboratory somewhere in the Far East, preparations had been made “just in case something like this ever happened”. Thus, the newly developed transforming and combining combat robot GEPPY-X was deployed into action.
Never before released outside of Japan, 70’s-Style Robot Anime GEPPY-X will now be available to play worldwide!
A love letter to Japanese mecha anime from the 70’s, this fast-paced 2D side-scrolling shooter has undergone a transformation of its own. Battle the Cosmic Demon Empire with quality of life improvements such as faster load times, rewind, save states, and more!

For this new release, each “episode” has had its opening theme, previews, commercials, and end credits re-digitized and restored to its original 24fps.

Geppy-X is a love letter to 70s mecha anime, specifically Getter Robo and to a lesser degree, Mazinger Z. Geppy-X is very clearly a Getter Expy with the combining mecha gimmick. Its attacks and upgrade form are references to Getter Robo and Getter Robo G. It's a nice nostalgic trip playing through the game for people familiar with the genre. The music is also scored by legends in the anime and mecha music scene. Unsurprisingly though, 40 bucks is a pretty huge asking price. I will recommend it to fans of mecha - specifically super robots. However if you're feeling the slightest bit apprehensive, I would suggest waiting for a sale. I personally bit the bullet however because I really liked the game from the demo and knew that despite the length, I'd still appreciate the game despite its price. I'd highly recommend for anyone at $20 and tentatively for people who are fans of super robots/japanese mecha at $30.
I used to not believe in the beauty of 2D mecha games, but this game made me a believer. I used to not believe this game was worth it, but my god, this might be my favorite remaster in recent memory. The sidescrolling is WAY more dynamic than i expected and i'm gonna spend dozens of hours mastering these controls. Whether you love retro games, mecha, or even art in general, this game is for you. Geppy X! We'll protect the Japanese economy!
。 This remaster is a remake of the classic side‑scrolling Getter game from the PS1 era. It’s fairly pricey, yet it comes with a full suite of convenient features, and its gallery function works really well. You can switch between three Getter forms anytime in‑game, each with distinct combat styles and weapons. As is typical, picking‑up power‑ups boosts your weapon performance and activates support drones, while your mech also gets upgrades and modifications midway through the campaign. Every stage features opening‑and‑ending‑style cutscenes, and each boss has its unique finishing animation. For that reason, in my opinion this old‑school title is actually more fun than the earlier UFO Robot Grendizer game.
This game is more expensive than most of the shmups you can buy but honestly, it's worth it because this game is a twofold labor of love. When it originally came out for the PS1, it arrived on four CDs because of the amount of voiced animation clips in it. The devs went full in on making this game feel like a parody of a 70s anime ( with some 80s and 90s flare too! ) with each stage being its own episode with an OP/ED, Eyecatches, and a silly commercial. Plus voice acting from the greats in mecha anime! Many, many, many years later this remake happened through great effort of passionate people to collect the original recordings and re-digitize them. Now this is absolutely insane with Japan's not very good rep with preserving old media with anime and games but a miracle happened with Geppy-X and everything was kept in good condition and found. This game is literally a piece of gaming history properly restored with love and passion rather than a slapped together cashgrab. This is especially important with the rise of AI and vibecoding to spit out games. You can put it on par with M2's ports. Now for the gameplay! You have the biggest hitbox ever. Bigger than a fat dragon from Dragon Spirit! But that's okay because you don't die in one hit, you have a generous amount of armor with rather frequent refill drops. So you will get hit, but it's not that bad. This does make the game feel more approachable to casual players. But there's still a bit of challenge in the game as there's no 1up pickups that I know of or score 1ups. So you have 3 lives and 3 continues to beat the game. Still very generous and casual friendly! You will be able to see the ending within a few playthroughs. You have 3 mech modes each with 2 different shots and 2 different charged shots. Each one feels pretty good, even the yellow one that's slow and short ranged. Play whichever one you like! Depending on which mech you use to kill a boss, you might get a special cutscene! it's fun trying to figure out for completing the animation collection. My only cons for this game is that the shooting controls feel a bit delayed because the game wants to complete doing and action before doing the next. You won't have an instant transformation or bombing if you were holding down the shoot button. It takes a bit getting used to and makes you play a bit slower. But once you get a feel of it, it's not that bad. Stages can be really short and bosses die fairly quickly, especially if you're fully powered. If you skip all the animations and cutscenes, the game is rather short. But this game isn't meant to be a pure action shmup, it's more about the presentation. So if you're a fan of 70s mecha anime, you're in for a fun ride. You'll have to beat the game three times to get all the endings so you get a good amount of replayability. Oddly enough, when loading a finished save file after beating the game, you get infinite continues. Also after you beat the game, you unlock the Extra modes where you play as the helper mechs! If you're the type who likes to fill out collections, Geppy-X has an enemy log and movie log to fill out. It's an absolute delight to read the silly descriptions of everything and weird names all the enemies have. There's an enemy called Night-Fog Soap-Bubbles Friday and another one called Old Man Missile Unit-1 to give an idea of the jokes in this game. Overall, Geppy-X is a really fun shmup! It's more about enjoying the ride than going for score or tight mechanics. You'll get a big smile out of this game, perhaps even shed a tear or two. It's an amazing passion project made by fans of old school giant mecha anime and shmups and I'm glad now the whole world and experience what was once a Japan exclusive gem of the PS1 days.
