About
It’s the year 197X…
A mysterious force calling itself the Cosmic Demon Empire suddenly launched an assault on Earth, commanding an army of colossal beast-shaped war machines known as the Space Beasts. Meanwhile, at a certain top-secret Space Robot Laboratory somewhere in the Far East, preparations had been made “just in case something like this ever happened”. Thus, the newly developed transforming and combining combat robot GEPPY-X was deployed into action.
Never before released outside of Japan, 70’s-Style Robot Anime GEPPY-X will now be available to play worldwide!
A love letter to Japanese mecha anime from the 70’s, this fast-paced 2D side-scrolling shooter has undergone a transformation of its own. Battle the Cosmic Demon Empire with quality of life improvements such as faster load times, rewind, save states, and more!

Geppy X is a game I honestly have mixed feelings about. The Steam release is a port of a Japan-only PS1 game that originally released in 1999, which was usually relegated to streamers who were looking for games no one had heard of to play - I'm pretty sure the people who ported the game know about it because of Slowbeef (who streamed it and did several con panels about it). In terms of raw production value, this game blows a lot of stuff on the PS1 out of the water. Each stage is presented as an episode of a late-70s mech anime down to the point where they have an OP, ED, and toy commercials. The titular robot has its own theme song (actually it has several) and the voiceacting was done by a bunch of big-name Japanese voiceactors (including having Kamiya Akira, who voiced the lead character in Getter Robo, voicing the lead character in this game). There's even a villain who is a copyright-friendly Char Aznable voiced by the same VA who did Char. From a visual and audio design perspective, everything about this game is amazing. The original developers cared so much that they put in a joke mode (called "The StarGeppys") that is a direct parody of the US release of Space Battleship Yamato (which was called "Star Blazers"). Then you get to the gameplay, which has ideas but falls flat on execution. Your robot has three forms that I'll call Red, Blue, and Yellow. Red is a spread shot, Blue is a laser that penetrates enemies but fires slower than Red, and Yellow is a joke (it's melee-only). The gimmick is that changing forms briefly removes your hitbox, and the game centers around using that to dodge attacks that your mech is too big to move through - kind of like Ikaruga but without the color mechanic. The re-release includes savestates and rewind for a reason (that reason being that I've seen people who are good at Touhou have trouble with Geppy), though as far as I am aware there are no hotkeys for those the way there would be on any major PS1 emulator: you have to pause the game and use it from there kind of like how the Wii/Wii U Virtual Console worked. The port job is also pretty good as far as I can tell: the cutscenes have definitely been upscaled, but it looks like there was actual work put into it and it's not just a rushed AI upscale job. The translation seems generally okay to me, with no obvious signs of MTL as far as I've seen. The one thing I think I really disagree with is the price: I'm sure a ton of work went into this, but $40 for a port of a 27-year-old PS1 game is a bit much, especially when the core gameplay really isn't the best. Still, it's worth experiencing if only for the audio-visual production value.
Makes you grow huge sideburns when playing.
If you're a mecha anime fan, especially of older series, the only consideration to whether you buy this or not should be the price. $35/40 is admittedly a steep ask for a scrolling shooter that only lasts two or three hours for a playthrough, though it does have some Star Fox-esque replayability in the form of having three different story routes, as well as various alternate modes you can unlock after finishing it. With that being said, this game is a shining example of quality over quantity. This is the first ever localization of a PS1 game that despite its length still launched on 4 discs purely because of how much video and audio content it has; it has its own anime opening and ending, mid-level intermissions with fake commercials, story cutscenes, and 'next episode' previews, all fully voiced by a cast taken from all kinds of famous mecha series from back in the day. Every stage has its own music track and almost all of them have vocals. It may only be a few hours, but I can almost guarantee that you will be smiling through that entire time. If you don't believe me, there's a demo that has the first three levels in it, and at the very least you've got to try it. Even if you're not a mecha fan or a scrolling shooter fan, I think it's worth playing the demo just to appreciate the insane amount of effort that went into this game. I think it's understandable that not everyone will be willing to pay this much for a relatively short title, but considering the small niche of this game and the effort of porting and translating it, I have no issue paying a premium for it to support efforts like this. I had never even heard of this game before the nextfest demo, and I think that's a massive shame for how incredibly cool it is.
I can honestly say that there's just not enough game here for the asking price. Just an on par, side scrolling space shooter from the PS1 era. Fortunately, I'm not here for just that, but the total nostalgia package of old 70's mech anime, themed songs, and the interspersed television toy ads. It's simply a purchase of appreciation.
This is probably most important game release of the year. Originally released in 1999 for the PS1, Geppy-X has long been a staple of "best games you've never played" lists and has been going for triple digit prices online for what seems like forever. Now it's readily available on like every platform and properly translated into 7 different languages, with its cutscenes restored from the master tapes by the same guy at Imagica who handled, among other things, the recentish 4K transfers of Angel's Egg and Branded to Kill. The actual gameplay is whatever, it's a horizontal shmup that's not nearly as punishing as the kind of stuff we're used to in a world where every other game's some sort of bullet hell roguelike (also it's not a long game, you can blaze through it in a few hours), but the presentation is nuts. The game's conceit is that every level is structured like an episode of an anime, complete with opening and ending credit sequences, a next episode preview, commercials, insert songs - the whole thing. No expense was spared (the PS1 version shipped on 4 discs and most of the disc space was taken up with cutscenes lol) and there's big names (in the anime arena, anyway) attached to it. It feels premium in a way that more than holds up today, especially now that all of that fancy animation has been remastered to Blu-ray quality. There's also a ton of bonus content, including a boss rush mode structured like a theatrical release of the theoretical Geppy-X TV series and a mode that imagines what the game would be like if it was Americanized a la Star Blazers. There's a demo if you want to try before you buy. Can't recommend it enough though, even if you don't click with the gameplay it's a unique experience you won't forget and it's not often that we get a remaster this good of an actual hidden gem outside of like Night Dive's work (have you played Killing Time yet? Please also play Killing Time).
