Poor Oscar just wants to relax. After a day of deliveries, on his last run he encounters The Cell of the Soul. Does this count as overtime?
Gameplay & Features
The game is a point-and-click adventure. Search the environments for clues or objects to help you progress through the story. The game is played with either your mouse or the space bar. A radial wheel will pop up when you click on an object with 4 actions; take, look, talk or use. You can drag one item on top of another to combine them. Or open up your inventory (right click your mouse) and drag an item to use it on an object in the environment. The settings are basic; full screen or windowed and audio controls. A nice touch is being able to listen to the original soundtrack provided on the main screen. Also credits are available to view on the main screen. 💥 Important! Save your game before exiting, it will not automatically save. I had to restart the game from scratch not knowing this.
The Visuals & Audio
Feelings of nostalgia surface when looking at a game like 7 Meters away. Oscar and the Cell of the Soul. The game is composed of pixel art graphics. The old school gamer in me was drawn to the appeal of this game as I hail from the era of the original Nintendo days. So this style will appeal to those who grew up in the same time frame as me. The soundtrack consists of 7 tracks that are haunting in some instances with hints of melancholy, with the exception of the end track which is mysterious and sci-fi-sih. The music reminds me of some of the other games I played in the same genre in the late 80’s and early 90’s. If you’ve ever watched Stranger Things some music in the background scenes will have these tones as well.
Dev Shout-out
Clever move Dlou…alien poster in the office :) So I will point all the gamers to your awesome Youtube channel if they wish to check out the developer and learn how to draw pixel art. Search DLOU_SAIYAN for his site.
Overall Experience
I do believe the developer should put out a strategy guide for this game. I did get stuck at times to the point of frustration. It could be just me not seeing a missing object I have to interact with or pick up, or not combining the proper items together. That is my only suggestion after putting in some time with the game. This game is a nostalgic trip with such well done pixel art. A lot of love went into the crafting of this game. A great first game by Dlou Saiyan that will satisfy any pixel lover. 💠 Otome Lovers wishes to thank Dlou Saiyan for providing a free review copy for this game.
BottomLine at the Top:
Developer has potential but I can't recommend this title.
Intro:
Full disclosure upfront a copy of this game was sent to me by the developer (thanks!). Its a quick adventure jaunt that has potential but ultimately falls short due to incompletion and lack of polish.
Pros:
-Good Background art -Some detailed sprite animations -Beginnings of an interesting mystery. -Standard 4 verb icon wheel -I like how the developer referenced himself in the game. If I ever made my own P&C I'd totally do the same lol. -Multiple save slots -Game does come across as having an interesting mystery.
Meh...:
-Starts in windowed mode...Yuck! -No Voice Acting -Default mouse speed is slow
Cons:
-Weird script timing. There are several scenes with obviously clickable objects present before the scripting allows you to actually pick them up. One or two of these would be ok but it happens too often in this game. -No hotspot highlight function -By far the worst part was the initial cell puzzle. Was very unintuitive due to an inventory item's design. -Ultimately this is an incomplete game posing as a short game. Apparently this was supposed to be "episode 1" basically, but that was not specified until the end of the game (its also not on the store page). It would have been better if this was a demo released to generate hype/funds for a completed game. But selling an incomplete game with no warning is kinda lame.
Final Thoughts:
I think this developer, and even the this particular title really have potential. The foundation of a good P&C game is here for sure. If this was a completed game I probably would have changed my review from negative to positive. Selling an incomplete game, even if its very cheap, is not something I would be interested in buying. «7 Meters Away. Oscar and the Cell of the Soul» — игра в жанре point-and-click, в которой вы берете на себя роль Оскара, молодого доставщика посылок.
Follow us for more Awesome Adventure
The only reason to give this game a thumbs up is to support the small developer trying to keep alive a dying genre, but unfortunately, this game barely qualifies as a game and feels more like a demo or prologue with actual ads for the developer. It's short, lasting around 1.5 hours (30 min if you're luckier than me) , and is filled with pixel hunts and red herrings, ending just as it starts to get interesting.
Can't recommend, that cell puzzle was nonsensical. It has some decent art though, hopefully the dev releases an official guide or another fan does the honors.
You know those games that have a Solo Dev vibe? This game, aside from being developed by just one person, feels like a personal and intimate story. I highly recommend this game if you want to enjoy a unique, short, deep story with a bit of mystery and, above all, a lot of heart. It's a graphic adventure that feels like those classic adventure games where any corner of the screen could be the key to uncovering the next step, and where the protagonist accompanies you like a friend trying to help you move forward on your journey. Along the way, you’ll get to know Oscar, the endearing protagonist of our story, who will, before you know it, become a friend in this adventure. This game has unexpected twists in the story, so it's hard to go into detail without spoilers, but I can certainly say that it won't leave you indifferent. I highly recommend this game.
