About
3D Life is a game of cellular automata that generate endless patterns from a few simple rules.
Cells live or die based on the number of live neighbors. Too many cells nearby, a cell is overcrowded. Too few, it is underpopulated. Empty cells come to life if they have a certain number of live neighbors.
From these rules evolve a multiplicity of forms that grow, blink, and glide through mathematical space. The behavior of each rule set is unique.
Use your stopwatch to control the flow of time: start and stop cell movement, slow down or speed up gameplay.
Use your flashlight to generate cells in three ways: randomly, frozen until discovered by the algorithm, or spaceships. Spaceships are cell patterns which move on their own, repeating after a number of generations. They can be created in any direction and orientation.
This game is VR-only for SteamVR-compatible headsets and motion controllers.
14 rule sets, each with their own unique patterns and behavior
23 spaceships
20 million+ cells
Start, stop, and control speed of play
Room-scale game; supports play areas up to 8 x 8 meters (26 sq. ft.)

Cells are generated in three different play modes:
Randomly but symmetric with respect to one axis (as it increases the chance of spontaneous spaceships)
Frozen cells which remain until discovered by the algorithm
Spaceships that move on their own, repeating after a number of generations
This game has rapid, flashing patterns.

Reviews
Played on the Meta Quest 3
Very close call here. I could have gone either way. However, I think the fact that you get more directions from reading the Steam store page than you do from within the game leads me to give this a negative review. You might enjoy this more than I did though. The lack of locomotion killed it for me. You have to move / turn IRL. It should be clearly labeled as a room-scale game (even if it's just standing room needed at minimum). It only says this "Supports play areas up to 8 x 8 meters (26 sq. ft.)". I also didn't like the controls for this game. It should have joystick locomotion and turning available at a minimum (smooth and snap turning). The lack of QoL features just leads me to go thumbs down. The controls just being button pushes is the least immersive way to do things. However, there is something here for you VR science nerds out there. It's open sandbox type play. It's perfect for those that like to experiment and think up solutions. It could of really helped to have a tutorial. Also, some kind of guided goals would be nice. Rate 4.5/10. Hate to give it a negative review, but devs need to realize that QoL features in VR really do matter such as proper on-boarding and comfort features / locomotion options. I won't refund though. It's not a bad game per se.
