Fight against ruthless hordes of zombies, break through infected ruins, collect codes and keys, read notes left in a hurry, and search for clues. Each step may be the last, but it is the only one that brings us closer to the truth about what happened in Zone 404.

About

Zone 404 is my first game project. You can expect a short story lasting about 50 minutes.
The game was not intended to be a full-fledged scary horror game, but rather an atmospheric experiment and a personal creative experience.
All locations were conceived and created by me from scratch. I have always enjoyed designing spaces and levels, and at some point, I decided to turn it into a full-fledged game by adding a small storyline, mechanics, and puzzles.
I hope this project will interest you and leave you with pleasant impressions.

Zone 404 is a single-player first-person shooter with horror and survival elements in the action genre, immersing you in the heart of a mysterious and strictly classified military contaminated zone.
An unknown outbreak has engulfed an isolated area designated in military documents as Zone 404. A team of military doctors trained to work in biological disaster conditions was sent there to investigate and stop the threat.
The operation failed — the helicopter crashed. You are the only survivor. In the heart of the dead sector, without communication, support, or room for error, you have no choice but to move forward through unknown and deadly territory.
In the game, you will encounter:
Battles with hordes of infected and a tense atmosphere of survival.
Exploration of tunnels, factory buildings, and isolated military facilities.
Search for keys, codes, and notes that gradually reveal the mystery of the disaster.
Checkpoints that allow you to return and continue your journey after death.
Atmospheric sound design and visual effects that enhance the feeling of horror and loneliness.
Each step brings you closer to the answer: what happened in Zone 404—an accident, a leak... or something far more sinister? Will you make it to the end... or will your name end up on the “missing” list?

Zone 404 is an indie first-person experience that places atmosphere and tension at the center of its design, reflecting the focused vision of a solo developer project created and published by ILYA KURTAEV. From the opening moments, the game establishes a bleak and unsettling tone, dropping the player into a sealed-off military zone that has clearly suffered a catastrophic failure. Abandoned facilities, scattered equipment, and silent corridors immediately suggest that whatever happened here was sudden, violent, and ultimately uncontrollable. Rather than relying on cinematic exposition, the game invites the player to piece together its story through exploration, environmental cues, and fragments of information left behind by those who did not survive. The pacing of Zone 404 leans toward slow, deliberate progression, encouraging caution over reckless aggression. Combat exists, but it is framed as something dangerous and costly rather than empowering. Ammunition and healing resources are limited, and encounters with infected enemies often feel tense due to confined spaces and unpredictable ambushes. Enemies are not particularly complex in their behavior, but their placement and the narrow environments ensure that even straightforward threats can become stressful under pressure. This approach reinforces the survival-horror influence, where awareness and restraint are often more important than reflexes or raw firepower. Exploration plays a crucial role in shaping the experience. The game frequently asks players to search laboratories, bunkers, and utility areas for keys, codes, or essential items, turning progression into a methodical process rather than a linear sprint. Along the way, notes, documents, and environmental storytelling gradually reveal the nature of the disaster that transformed Zone 404 into a quarantine nightmare. While the narrative itself is relatively simple, the act of uncovering it piece by piece adds weight to the setting and gives purpose to the slow traversal of ruined spaces. This structure will feel familiar to fans of classic horror shooters, but it also gives the game a steady rhythm that supports its oppressive mood. Visually, Zone 404 embraces a raw and subdued presentation that prioritizes atmosphere over technical polish. Environments are dominated by muted colors, concrete textures, and industrial lighting that flickers or fails at key moments. Darkness is used effectively to limit visibility and heighten anxiety, often forcing players to rely on sound and instinct rather than clear sightlines. While the graphics are clearly modest and occasionally rough, this roughness can enhance the feeling of decay and abandonment rather than detract from it. The sound design further strengthens the experience, using distant noises, sudden audio cues, and long stretches of silence to keep the player uneasy and alert. What stands out most about Zone 404 is its sense of intention. It does not attempt to compete with large-scale shooters or deliver complex systems, but instead focuses on crafting a contained, unsettling journey that reflects its creator’s strengths. The game feels personal in its scope, with design decisions that favor immersion and mood over spectacle. This also means that its limitations are visible, particularly in enemy variety and overall content depth, which may leave some players wishing for more mechanical complexity or replay value. In the end, Zone 404 is best viewed as a focused indie horror-FPS experience rather than a genre-defining release. Its strength lies in its atmosphere, deliberate pacing, and commitment to tension, offering a somber journey through a contaminated zone that feels genuinely unsafe. Players who enjoy slow-burn horror, environmental storytelling, and modest yet sincere indie projects will likely find value in what it offers. While it may not leave a lasting mark on the genre, it succeeds in delivering a tense, self-contained experience that reflects a clear creative vision and a strong understanding of mood-driven game design.
I was a tester of the game, overall a good game for the evening, I'm glad that the bugs that I found, the developer fixed everything literally on the same day
The screenshots looked too good, especially for an indie game. I thought it was a render and had little to do with the game, but in the end, these are actually gameplay moments. It's a bit short, but it's just right for passing the evening. I encountered an unpleasant bug with a door in the middle of the game, but overall it wasn't critical and didn't affect the gameplay or progress.
5/10, so so. Not that long, graphics not that good. Mobs of zombies sometimes. My playing times are always long as I write schematic walkthroughs of all I play, for possible replays. Won't ever happen with this one. Would have played it I've had known, not really. But for the low sale price I paid would be harsh to give a thumb down as I was entertained. Didn't find ammo nor health anywhere at the start, nor later, no inventory. -- Disclosure, 70 y.o. gamer. So I used cheat engine for infinite ammo (4 Bytes, 9999 instead of 15). The zombies take your health in chunks so great and quick that I didn't got time to find the health meter address.
