«ZHED - Puzzle Game» Review(En/RUS)
Gameplay: https://youtu.be/_M3n4qxXUCY
«Review(En):»
Logic puzzle. The mechanics resemble checkers. The goal is to capture a white chip. Each chip moves only in a straight line and has a certain number of moves (are taken into not repainted cells only, you can jump over adjacent chips). The difficulty is high, but you get a few hints at the start and one hint for completing each level. + Minimalistic graphics. + Nice music and sounds. + Convenient mouse control. + 100 levels. + High complexity, but you can restart levels as many times as you like. + There are hints, undo moves and quick restart. - No training (description of mechanics).
«Review(RUS):»
ZHED is a quality puzzle game which offers a good challenge. Recommended.
If you're used to the artsy, one-note small puzzlers genre which pops up on Steam regularly, then you'll probably know exactly what this one is. It has one mechanic, offers a very repetitive, droning electronic music with very little personality. Visuals are basic geometry and flat colours, with a palette swap every so many levels. Clicking makes a noise. Really none of that matters, what matters is the mechanic, and well... ZHED doesn't really stand out in any way, good or bad. The core mechanic is fairly unique but simple: each numbered block on the grid can "paint" X tiles in a straight line, where X is the number written on the block. Tiles which are already painted "extend" that range, so if there are two tiles which are already painted in the direction you want to paint with a numbered block, you will have a range of X + 2 in that direction. The goal is to paint a specific tile on the grid. If you boil it down, it ends up being a "right order" type of puzzle. I found the way of thinking to be reminiscent of traffic jams, where you need to move pieces (usually cars) in straight lines to get out, except instead of other blocks impeding you, here they help you. There are a number of issues with ZHED: - The difficulty curve is awful. You will clear 10 levels in 2 minutes, and then be stomped for 10 on a specific one. Now puzzle games get people stuck in different places as we all have different ways to approach puzzles, but in this case I'm confident in saying that some levels are just straight up harder for no reason. - It's 1280x1024 at most, with black bars in full screen. In 2020. Yes. - There is very little in the way of progression in the game. There are no other mechanics, no sub-logics which appear as you play, and there are not a lot of patterns either. It's really just grids getting bigger. So at the end of the day, is it a good game? ... Yeeees? I think? It's a fun little time waster with not much to offer past its one mechanic. It has 100 levels, which being half-way through I think will keep me busy about 4-6 hours. However, ZHED is not particularly clever or satisfying - only filling. And that's alright.
If you like puzzle games, then this one is for you. It is relaxing, there is no timer, and you can take it at your own pace. It starts off easy, but then it gets harder over time. There are times I was just stubborn and keep on doing the same thing over and over, and you got to force yourself to think of different patterns. The best part is when you spend a long time on a level and then finally it clicks and you beat it, that is the most gratifying part of it. Wife loves to play it and so do I when I have some time to kill. There are 100 levels so replayability is low (?) I guess unless you want to do the levels all over again. It is the most interesting puzzle game I've played in a long time, and I don't play puzzle games that much.
Played on Steam Deck. Bold claims in the description of being ""an instant classic puzzle game"" and it actually lives up to that. I haven't seen this puzzle mechanic before but it plays really well and fits perfectly as a minimalist puzzler for my Steam Deck. The back half of the game is pretty hard, primarily the stages with ""red herring"" style elements which were my only issue with this format. The puzzle elements included exclusively to throw the player down the wrong track felt unecessary since the strength of the puzzles already was finding the correct order, so these levels just feel like a waste of time and are frustrating. These elements specifically are blocks positioned to be potential final pieces in a cardinal direction of the finish block, so instead of trying to work out the solution to a single puzzle it is required to work out the solutions to four puzzles to see which one is possible and that is a task that is too much for me personally. Similarly there are stages with multiple finish blocks, but only one is possible... Thankfully there are hints that are accumulated from finishing stages so I could just spam hints to get through those, so overall the game is good especially for the sale price.
Great puzzle game, currently at level 46, level 46 is start of a lot more tiles in play and shrinking of the board to accommodate it. Get a tile to reach the WHITE SQUARE tile, that is all. Numbered tiles on the board and place that many tiles in one direction only, but if others are in the way, it goes its # total regardless, and some maybe tile(s) maybe red herring (not used in solution).
ZHED is a very unique numbers-based puzzle game that I would draw some comparison with nonograms (logic puzzles, basically) since tile counting is a pretty big part of the gameplay. In this game, the goal is to reach the white tile by using numbered tiles and what these numbered tiles do is that they "extend" by placing the exact number of coloured tiles in the direction you chose. Like all good puzzle games, there are rules of course, for instance, coloured tiles can't be placed in a grid that already has a coloured tile, and you can use these rules to your advantage. ------------
Watch me play!
Levels 1 to 45 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z390z84iHyc Please take note that I'm not a hardcore puzzler. I love playing simple puzzles mostly and I do have a strong penchant for puzzles like Sudoku. Finally, solved level 46 and now I got stumped at level 47 :P https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqJmDqySMgA --------------------- The game also has an insane number of levels (up to 100 I think). Although I've basically breezed through quite a lot of puzzles (didn't use a single hint right until level 45/46 if I'm not mistaken), the difficulty really ramps up as you play and I ended up barely reaching the halfway point before I've thrown up my hands. I'm currently taking a break but I'll definitely take a crack at level 47 again when I feel I'm up to it :) However, since I'm not a particularly hardcore puzzler, the levels that I found difficult might not be so for a veteran puzzler, so please do take that into account.
Pros
+ Love the minimalistic look! At every milestone, the colour scheme of the board and the tiles changes so that you won't be bored looking at the same stuff. + Very interesting, brain-teasing puzzles that gradually become more difficult and complicated as you play, despite not (really) introducing any new mechanics. + LOTS of levels + Relaxing music that's nice to listen to + Limited hints but you can earn more of them by successfully completing a puzzle. It's best to accumulate as many as you can because you might need to use quite a number of them + Has unlimited reset and undos. You can earn achievements for using them as well! + The price is a steal!
Cons/Feedback
- Not really a con but I might have to spend a ton of hints from my "nest egg of hints" to solve a single level so I'm not particularly happy about that :P
Overall
ZHED may not look like much but it's not only a challenging puzzle game; it's also brain-teasingly fun and is perfect for midcore to hardcore puzzlers. At its asking price and the hours of hours of entertainment that it can bring, I daresay that this game is a steal and a treat all rolled into one! If you love puzzles, ZHED should definitely be in your wishlist, if not in your library.
