Reviews
This game is a fail because we have to guess which move was played by the player and often it is not the best move according to the engine.
Do not purchase this product. Firstly, there are multiple positions where you are forced to make the Champion's move in order to progress, even if there's an objectively better move in the position. For instance, in the game Kramnik v. C. Houze Lyons 2001, Kramnik played Rxg7+ instead of Re8#, so Zen Chess forces you to do the same. Secondly, there is at least one position(Tal v. Tringov Amsterdam 1964) where the continuation shown in Zen Chess not only deviates from the original game, but also contains a move that is obviously illegal. Thirdly, and as far as I'm concerned most damningly, the user experience for this is painful. There's no drag and drop for moving the pieces, the game allows you to make illegal moves, the game takes a long time to transition from one level to the next, and if you get a move wrong(which, for the reasons above, may actually not even be wrong) you have to restart from the initial position.
What can i say, i liked Zen chess mate in 1, 2,3 and 4 moves. For 0.51 cents on sale i would say this a good deal on Zen Chess Champion moves. But i feel as if there are too many errors in the chess moves. On board #47 there is an illegal move made by the game. You can not put the kind in check but that is what it did. There are several boards you can finish with better moves but the game is inflexible. It feels wrong some how. Or maybe my chess skill is too high as the game is not really a challenge for me. I feel that this game is a miss somehow, it should of been better. But then again for 0.51 cents on sale I should not complain. The only feeling is that this could of been a great game if the developers care enough. Buy at your own risk.
INSTALLING NOTHING
In 'Zen Chess: Champion's Moves' you will be put in the position of a World Chess Champion. You will need to play through historical games and solve the same chess problems the champions had to solve to win each game. PROS - Simple to play; - Great concept; - A good game for your memory; - Beautiful designed chess board; - 150 different puzzles; - 15 achievements; - Famous chess quotes; - Promoting chess on Steam; - Relaxing music; CONS - There isn't a reset button; - You can do impossible moves (there isn't a chess engine); - Not for begginers (I would recommend to play the Mate in One, Two, Three, Four series first); - There are multiple puzzle errors: Puzzle 47:
After Bxf7+, black plays Kxf7 and not Kd8.
Puzzle 100:
The white pawn on e5 should actually be white so you could be able to resolve that puzzle.
- There are description errors: Puzzle 112:
Rb7 move is actually mate, but the description says: '' Salomor Flohr resigns''.
- Multiple possible best moves: Puzzle 125:
There are 4 possible best moves as it's a mate in one move.
Puzzle 149:
Rh1 (which is the second move) can be played instead of Rh2 as the first move.
I know that you need to find the exact move that the Champions made back then, but the developers should have chosen only the puzzles that have one possible best move. If there are 4 possible best moves on the board then it's a matter of guessing and not a logical quest; - If the puzzle ends with a mate then you don't have enough time to study the final position as the game moves forward to the next puzzle; - The puzzles were taken from a free online chess archive and they still managed to copy them wrong in some cases; - All these issues are known for years, but nobody is trying to fix them. It took me around 45 minutes to finish the game and I would give it a 5/10 difficulty rating as there are many errors. It's better to get this game on a sale as, in my opinion, it is the worst one from Zen Chess and I would recommend it to those who want to test/improve their chess skills or to those who want to try new games/are doing playthroughs. If you don't know how to solve a puzzle, you can check out my full game playthrough video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7tUpKyjmsU
2/10 amazing idea and would love a CHESS game like this this game and ALL Zen Chess don't know how to play chess! The game knows how to unlock the next level by putting pieces in the order and place they choose. this means the game will only accept the win if you did it the way they wanted and not any other way.
Played on Steam Deck. Not recommended. This isn't chess puzzles like the other Zen Chess games, but just recreating the final moves of previously played GM matches. It's random too, sometimes you have two moves and will actually play checkmate because that's what happened in the match, but most of the time it is last 1-10 moves before a resignation, and even the resignation happens several moves out from checkmate and you don't even get to play it out. I play 4 moves to see the stage complete with the message "Bent Larsen resigns (Mate in 6 moves) or play 1 move and see "Pal Petran resigns (Mate in 8 moves)".... There are even two stages with some unnecessary moves thrown in probably just because that's how the match played out in real life, is this supposed to be like a walk down memory lane or something?
