I keep warping into walls 10/10
This game is voluntarily designed as a spiritual successor of sorts to Witch-bot Meglilo, as the backstory is that the same institute that made that magical girl into a cyborg (and built Vulkaiser) many decades earlier, has perfected the warp technology first used with her and applied it to a new craft, which is in truth more similar to a mini-mecha, sent to battle a mad scientist and his bio-engineered army. The warp is no more merely evasive, as teleporting through enemies acts like a slash that destroys the weaker ones and severely damages the big ones. Due to its wider use, it recharges much faster than it did in Meglilo and several warps can even be chained as long as there is energy. Upgrading between levels unlocks other abilities: a very useful shockwave around the point of warping, a bigger shockwave should the shield be lost, and even an afterimage that temporarily attracts enemy aggression. As the ship is small and maneuverable but fairly slow both in movement and fire rate, using these abilities to the fullest is imperative. The level design takes full advantage of the warp, with multi-directional scrolling and plenty of obstacles and traps. The early levels have the familiar style of many Astro Port games, with even some apparent recycling that I can easily overlook, given their productivity and that it's set in a shared universe. Later on, however, technology makes way for biological monstrosities that get increasingly twisted, up to some peaks of body horror. The music gets appropriately eerie. It's like they recalled the times of Dark Hell Company and Psyche Metal, and I wish they did more like that. Either way, the bosses are some of the best from AP to date, with some even too big to fit into a single screen. A particularly clever miniboss is a core inside a circular space, with two blades moving at different speeds like clock hands. It's quite challenging even at lower difficulties, some memorization of the level layouts is required, and certain traps and enemy attacks can be a bit unfair (those damn giant wasps), but there is no limit to how many times you can continue. Slashing through a boss back and forth is one of the most rewarding maneuvers. Replays are very open to experimenting with different upgrade choices. There is a cameo from another Astro Saga game (If only the trailer didn't spoil that already), and you will get a certain reward if you are fast enough to act... Zangeki Warp is possibly the best Astro Port game up to this point and, just like most of their catalogue, worth every cent of its price.
Makes the mistake of forcing you to hold down the attack button when there is never any reason not to be shooting, but I fixed it with a custom steam controller config that makes the Y button a toggle that spams the A button.
I understand what this game is trying to do but no.
That warp mechanic in this game is just really good and smooth. One of the most creative shmups ive ever played. When i first saw it in videos, i thought, this game will be one of the hardest games out there... and yeah, its definitely not that easy but the interesting thing is, i never got frustrated by it. You can always warp more and experiment with better directions... this game is just fun all the way.
浓厚的IREM味道!十分大胆的设计加上版面构造
