Maybe good on Coop
I'm sorry but i can't recommend this game to Solo players: - The difficulty on the first level is ok but on the second it's not possible to play Solo. - The A.I. from the second character who is suppose to help you is really bad and keep dying so you end up playing alone. - The shooting doesn't seem to do enough damage to enemies and the range of the bullets should be much more further. Sorry again but i had to refund (even with this low price).
If you like my reviews, consider into subscribing to my curator page: https://store.steampowered.com/curator/5504022/ Welcome to the adventures of Melee Dude and Ranged Boy This game is a Twin-Stick Shooter with Tower Defense mechanisms. You play Cye (Melee Dude) and Chrome (Ranged Boy). The game created as a Co-Op game but you can play it alone while the AI takes over the char you don’t play and you can switch any time you want. The graphics are simple but good. You always have a good overview and the screen is not too much cluttered with special effects from attacks. The only thing that is distressing are some of the on screen infos like incoming waves/last wave as they can hide enemies which can be very bad. The sound is also good. Nothing special, nothing bad. You can play longer sessions without wanting to rip your ears off. The Story Mode consists out of 15 stages with each 6 challenges to beat. A stage consists out of multiple rounds that are bound to the amount of reactores to protect. Each stage can have up to 3 reactors. At the start of a stage you can choose freely what reactor you want to protect. After the waves are finished you have to choose the next reactor. While the not chosen reactors are deactivated and not attackable by enemies, every new reactor you choose activates additionally to the old ones you have to protect, so in the end you have to protect up to 3 reactors. Your characters have two attacks the core attack by clicking and a charged attack. The core attacks are sadly utter useless. On top of that you can chose up to 3 skills. Melee Dude has some attacks and traps and Ranged Boy has some towers he can place. You can play the game either alone or with a friend online or via local coop. If you don’t have friends you can play alone with an AI controlling the second character. Sadly the AI is even dumber than trump. It will run into walls, never use charged attacks or skills and die alot. So playing alone raises the difficulty of the game very strong. The controls are mostly good and fluid but the skill system needs a rework to be fully viable. Currently you have to have to hold the right mouse button select the skill with the mouse and then aim the skill and click to use it. Have an enemy you want to attack with a skill that is on the far left, have fun doing that fast. The game desperately needs needs quick slots for those skills and not only for yourself but also for your pal if you play alone. Something you can configure so you can press 1 for the skill in the first slot. Also in Single Player the game desperately needs the function that you can make the AI force to use a skill, so they are not too worthless. While playing you get EXP for killing and using skills. This levels your character up and you get skill points to upgrade your skills, which you can reset at any time for no costs. Sadly you can not upgrade your core attacks or life, which will make your characters die in less than a second on higher levels. All in all the game is quite fun and with a friend probably even more fun. Want a real video? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbfEFJUL60o The game is definitely recommendable but needs some few tweaks and re-balancing and it could be a good longtime timewaster. Also some more levels would not hurt, as you can play through the “story” in less than 3 hours. So grab it while it’s hot!
I have not played the 2014 release of this game, so I will review this version by itself. ZAMB! is a twin-stick shooter where you have to defend power nodes by building turrets, placing different types of traps, and using other offensive abilities. We played the co-op for a few hours and the game managed to give as a challenge by exposing our lack of teamwork ;). ZAMB has 2 playable characters, one of them places the turrets, and the other dude is more like a crowd-control spammer. However, both characters can pick up and carry turrets around which is really cool. There are a few different areas with multiple stages, each ending with a boss fight. The game even has an endless mode, control binding and lots of upgrades - more than I can say for some similar games. I would recommend playing it with someone, but it has the same content for single player as well (15 stages, 3 boss fights, and several endless maps)
Technical Notes:
It's not the most fluid game I ever played, it definitely feels a little stiff when you moving around. Sometimes the UI gets in a way, not only the pictures take a huge part of the screen, but some of the effects can pop-up over the middle when you are aiming - an option to reduce some of that would be welcome. I played the game with the keyboard+mouse, so I had to use mouse to select skills which can be harder than using hotkeys (I don't think that it has them for specific spells yet). However, I did not encounter any glitches so far.
Gameplay mechanics:
Both of the characters have several abilities (or turrets) to unlock, but you can only carry 3 during gameplay. Each ability has several passive upgrades such as damage, range, and AOE effect. I prefer to play as the turret dude so my job is mostly about turret positioning. Some of the maps have placements nodes that empower the canons, giving them massive bonuses or range. Sometimes you have to defend several locations at the same time so you do have to use some planning. From what I played the game is not that easy in multiplayer without teamwork ;), but you can get some interesting support abilities. Usually, the game requires you to defend a power node from multiple enemy waves, and then move to the next location. If you are playing alone then you will be controlling both characters by switching with a tab* (a bit complex if you not very experienced). Pros: + fun co-op mode, encourages teamwork + story and endless mode + several turrets and skills with upgrades + can change controls + achievements Cons: - movement is a little clunky - could use settings to reduce UI/effects - could use hotkeys for all skills (1,2,3 maybe)
Overall Thoughts: 7/10
I will admit that I was not enjoying the game by myself because of the clunky movement, but it's a lot more fun in co-op. To be fair, I do like the actual gameplay features, with more polish it would be a decent game. It's still pretty easy to recommend at $3 though. Extremely fun little hybrid game. You will definitely want to do it co-op as single player makes it difficult to take advantage of the two dudes in the game. Scratches similar itches too Orcs Must Die and Nuclear Throne. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H25zo_8d-LE
Introduction
This colourful comic book style looking game known as ZAMB! Endless Extermination is a Tower defence mixed with a twin stick shooter. Unfortunately, I can't see this game being able to stand on it's own two feet, it just feels and plays too generic and too much like other games of a similar genre. But of course, let me explain my reasoning. (TL;DR Below)
Gameplay
So what can you expect from ZAMB!? Well, like other games of the similar genre you will be walking around a area defending reactors that you hack from waves of enemies in order to win. Seems simple enough, and perhaps that's where the game falls flat because that's all there is to the game, it never really expands upon this and as you can imagine it gets boring and repetitive pretty quickly. Unfortunately, the game doesn't help itself with other specific things that makes the game less interesting and just not very inviting to play. But there are still a few positives that this game kinda has going for them! The tutorial is well presented and shows you everything you need to know quickly. Even if your not a person who plays tutorials in games, in that case don't even worry about it. The game never forces you to play the tutorial and waste your time, so if you wanna go into the game inexperienced of the controls whilst you flail around the area like a bull being played then that option is there for you. When it comes to character selection, don't get your hopes up however, there are only two. Which initially wouldn't be a bad thing, but considering the gameplay (for me personally) is bland and boring I would've liked to have seen some different types of characters instead of just the two. Don't get me wrong though, the two characters that are in the game aren't all that bad, and if you have a friend you can play co-op which is the better way to play the game as you can both take advantage of the characters special abilities. Speaking of which, if you're like me and you have literally no friends because you were that one awkward guy at college/school then you'll probably have a bit more of a rougher time with this game. The AI that plays as the other character isn't well programmed and acts more like cannon fodder to try to help you instead. Just pushing themselves into enemies so they take all the damage whilst you try to kill them all. It also doesn't help that the AI doesn't use any of their special abilities. So you know, might wanna start making friends now to have an easier time with this game. Even though the AI lacks the ability to use their special abilities, there is still a nice amount of variety that you can choose from, and they all unlock very early on in the game. Chrome (guy with the gun) can place down different kinds of turrets and Cye (guy with blades on hands) has elemental abilities which gives you a nice range to choose from and coming up with some strategy of winning if you had a friend. Consequently, there are no upgrades for your main weapons so you'll feel super weak later in the game and will be forced to keep using special abilities. And to use these abilities you have to spend gems that you get from killing enemies or finding in the level, so there is a limited supply of them really.
Graphics
One of the stronger points of this game is the graphics, you have these colourful comic styled graphics throughout the game and it just looks great. There are even some comic strips at the start of every level to give a bit of insight of what's happening between each level. However, this does seem to lack a little when it comes to some of the enemies you fight against.
Music
The soundtrack to this game is good, and add a certain level of intensity when you are up against a swarm of enemies just rushing towards the reactors that you have to protect. Would've like to of had a bit more variety as I'm not sure if they all sound similar or if it is just all the same music.
Pros
+ Quick and simple tutorial, teaching you everything you need to know + Can play co-op on endless or story mode + Nice amount of special abilities, unlocking very early game + Comic book art style is great and about the only unique thing going for this game + Good music
Cons
- Basic twin stick shooter / tower defence gameplay which never expands or tries something new to be different - Game play feels bland and generic, nothing really makes it something new or special from other games in the genre - Only 2 characters to pick from, would've liked to of seen one or two more maybe - Playing single player with AI will make story mode significantly harder - Bad friendly AI who rarely use their special abilities - No upgrades for your main weapon, forcing you to use special abilities more often than not
Closing Thoughts
From the outside, a promising game with a nice comic book art style, however look beyond that and you'll find that ZAMB! doesn't really differ from other games of it's genre. Bland, generic and gets repetitive with the lack of expanding on just the idea of defending 3 reactors from enemies spawning in the level. Wouldn't hurt to give it a try for the amount it's selling itself for, but for me personally I wouldn't bother. Look, I'm not going to lie. My dad is straight up named Craig. No Joke. I will pay 14 pence to any woman, OR MAN, who doesn't ejaculate on to their monitor after playing this game (into your own eye does count but only for 5 pencce). Craig fingers me.
Nice little game. For its £2 price id say its worth every penny. COOP is the one. Its ok with A.I. though.
My Experience I had a great time with Zamb!, although I probably don't know how to pronounce that title correctly. First off, I love it when cooperative games give each player a unique role. Cye has powers that he can use during a level, such as lightning orbs and healing circles, and he predominantly serves as a melee brawler. Chrome, on the other hand, can equip and drop up to three types of towers at a time (the majority of which attack enemies), but only has a ranged weapon. Outside of each level, towers and powers can be upgraded using the points earned when characters level up. Points can be refunded at any time, so you can re-prioritize if need be. Each level has a few challenges - typically, one of these will involve a certain type of "combo." Combos are activated, I believe, when a few enemies are killed after taking damage from both a turret and a power. Different types of combos result from different combinations of turrets and powers. These challenges and the ability to respec at-will encourage players to experiment. However, I was partial to the cooldown tower (which slows and damages enemies) and the laser sniper (which has good range and penetrates through enemy groups). Certain aspects of the game (outside of the gameplay itself) have a low-budget feel, but that's hardly surprising with such a low-costed game ($2.99!?). I actually think the developers could safely kick the price up a few more dollars. The game features some odd-looking comic book-style panels between levels, which look like they might've emerged from MS Paint. They aren't awful, but character proportions sometimes appear strange. The other big issue is with some of the achievements and challenges in-game. After completing all of the 15 levels, my co-op partner and I wanted to go after some challenges and achievements. Unfortunately, there are many issues here. Oddly enough, I acquired the achievement for buying all upgrades for a single power ("I've Got The Power!) although I never played with Cye. In addition, there was a challenge in one level for completion without moving a tower once it is placed. We completed the level once, and although I was sure that I hadn't moved a tower, the challenge was listed as incomplete on the score screen. We played it again and I didn't drop any towers at all (and actually popped the "I'm a Big Boy now!" achievement for completing a level without dropping towers) but still the challenge was listed as incomplete. We decided not to pursue these extra challenges if they were bugged. Other issues include:

As you take down enemies, you build up a "boost" bar. You can activate your boost to increase the amount of damage you deal. This boost bar depletes extremely quickly, to the point where it doesn't often feel like it's worth messing with.
On a few occasions we had difficulty activating our "Zamb!" ability. This ability must be activated by both players at a reactor, and will wipe the screen of enemies. However, if it isn't triggering, you're just standing there hitting X (at least on an XBOX 360 controller) while both you and the reactor take damage.
Although I had a couple issues here and there with meter-based powers and bugs with challenges and achievements, I enjoyed almost every second with Zamb!. If you wanted some replayability, you might even decide to go back through the levels with the other character. A quick tip: levels don't begin until you begin hacking a reactor - therefore, you can usually scrounge up enough resources through destroying red crates to start with a tower on the map.
