A little simple, but definitely enjoyable and well done. Just for the record, I don't think it's a Zelda clone, but more inspired by Golden Axe Warrior, which is a great game as well
game is a knock off of zelda nes like what they did with god of thunder (pc, 1993). this game is pretty easy, i m just walking and get around pretty fast. the music is not that bad, it s at least music and a nice tune, but the same (mp3?wav?)-loop is being repeated whole the time and in the overworld this gets a little bit .. to much the game, i bought it with sale/discount for only 0.39 euro cents, and i dont really mind what other people have written as a review, i think i like this game but i suspect it s gonna be a short playthrough. i ve only played 1 hour and gotten 1/3th of the overworld map discovered. what they did is pretty neat, they made for each screen in the overworld map a different screenshot instead of what was the case with zelda 1 nes you now see a pretty screenshots composed overworld-map when y press select. has joystick/controller support no problems there - using a logitech gamepad f-310 usb. a few things are a bit of a nuisance - the way to save the game is just by exiting to the menu, why is there no save game option in the game menu. and in the castles/dungeons the floor tiles seem to confuse me aswell as the way doorways to the up have been made graphically. it s not always clear where you can walk (door) or when it s a wall. and the floor tiles dont look like being a floor in many cases. but this is not a big problem it s only graphically. and achievements are easy - already got a couple within one hour of playing
In homage to the classic top-down adventure games of the 1980s, Zahalia adheres to the conventions of that period. Each screen represents a distinct room, many of which contain hidden secrets. Explore the expansive overworld, discover concealed caves, and acquire new abilities to enhance your character. Zahalia effectively captures the charm of titles such as the original Legend of Zelda. The secrets are not only beneficial but also attainable, the dungeons require a degree of effort to navigate, there is a diverse array of enemies to enrich the combat experience, and the puzzles are engaging.
Not for me, but the game works fine.
Zahalia is an action-adventure role-playing game developed and published by LunarCore Games that draws inspiration from classic fantasy adventures built during earlier generations of gaming. Instead of pursuing cinematic storytelling or expansive modern design philosophies, the game embraces simplicity and nostalgia, delivering an experience centered on exploration, discovery, and steady progression. Built around retro-inspired mechanics and old-school adventure structure, Zahalia feels like a deliberate tribute to an era where curiosity and persistence shaped the entire experience. The story follows a familiar fantasy framework that intentionally recalls older adventure titles. A once peaceful kingdom has fallen into danger after a powerful Dark Wizard steals sacred crystals that helped maintain balance throughout the land. Players step into the role of a hero tasked with recovering these crystals and confronting the growing darkness threatening Zahalia. The narrative remains straightforward throughout much of the experience, focusing less on dramatic storytelling twists and more on creating motivation for exploration and progression. Rather than overwhelming players with lengthy exposition, the game prefers to let adventure itself become the centerpiece. One of Zahalia’s greatest strengths is how strongly it commits to its retro design identity. Exploration drives progression from beginning to end. Players move across a world designed around secrets, hidden locations, and gradual discovery. Hidden caves, concealed rewards, and optional pathways encourage careful observation instead of rushing directly toward objectives. The game trusts players to explore naturally, rewarding patience and curiosity with upgrades and valuable discoveries. The structure itself immediately captures the spirit of older fantasy adventures. Areas are built in a way that encourages revisiting locations after gaining new tools or abilities. Progression unfolds steadily as players become stronger and gain access to previously unreachable areas. This creates satisfying moments where advancement feels connected directly to exploration rather than simply gaining levels or collecting larger numbers. Growth feels earned because new possibilities emerge naturally as the journey continues. Combat remains relatively straightforward but fits the overall philosophy of the experience. Battles emphasize positioning, timing, and preparation rather than demanding elaborate skill combinations or highly technical mechanics. Equipment upgrades gradually strengthen the player while new weapons and defensive options provide a familiar sense of progression. Zahalia never attempts to reinvent action role-playing combat systems, but it succeeds by making battles support exploration rather than overshadow it. Merchants and equipment progression help reinforce long-term advancement. Stronger gear creates motivation to continue pushing further into dangerous territory, while gradual upgrades help create a satisfying sense of character development. The pacing remains controlled and deliberate, giving players opportunities to steadily improve without overwhelming them with excessive systems or complicated mechanics. Visually, Zahalia embraces a retro-inspired presentation that feels intentionally nostalgic rather than technologically limited. Pixel art environments and top-down exploration immediately communicate the type of experience players should expect. The world favors readability and atmosphere over technical complexity, creating a visual style that aligns naturally with the game’s classic influences. Players who appreciate older fantasy adventure aesthetics will likely feel comfortable with its presentation immediately. The atmosphere also contributes significantly to the experience. Zahalia succeeds at creating the feeling of stepping into a smaller fantasy world filled with hidden opportunities waiting to be uncovered. The pacing encourages exploration rather than urgency, allowing players to move at their own speed while slowly uncovering secrets scattered throughout the world. There is a satisfying rhythm created through movement, discovery, and gradual progression that complements the retro design philosophy effectively. However, Zahalia’s dedication to traditional adventure design will not appeal equally to everyone. Players expecting heavily cinematic storytelling, extensive character customization systems, or highly modernized gameplay mechanics may find its simplicity limiting. Combat systems remain intentionally straightforward, and progression depends heavily on exploration rather than narrative spectacle. Those unfamiliar with older adventure game design may occasionally find its pacing slower than expected. The independent scale also becomes noticeable throughout the experience. Zahalia focuses on delivering a specific style of adventure rather than attempting massive ambition beyond its scope. Instead of chasing larger production standards, LunarCore Games concentrates on building a focused experience designed around exploration and nostalgia. That decision ultimately becomes one of the game’s greatest strengths. Zahalia succeeds because it understands exactly what kind of game it wants to be. It does not attempt to modernize every mechanic or reinvent fantasy adventure conventions. Instead, it builds an experience for players who enjoy discovering hidden locations, upgrading equipment, and exploring fantasy worlds built around curiosity and gradual progression. For players who miss classic adventure games that prioritized exploration and discovery over cinematic presentation, Zahalia delivers a focused and enjoyable experience filled with retro charm and rewarding progression. It may not dramatically reshape expectations for the genre, but it captures the spirit of older fantasy adventures with enough confidence and sincerity to leave a lasting impression. Rating: 6/10
