About
Grendel’s Cave is a top-down 2D pixel-art adventure game. Its setting is the Old English text Beowulf, Norse mythology, and the historical early 6th century Scandinavian warrior culture. Grendel's Cave is based on the legacy online dotcom game, GrendelsCave, which was one of the first on-line browser-based adventure games. Now Beowulf brings you this adventure as a real-time interactive 2D game for PC and Mac. In Grendel's Cave you create Thanes, kill monsters, increase value, stats and magic, and collect items. You obtain gold rings by selling items or by Singing of Deeds before King Hrothgar. You gain magical abilities by visiting the Witch and by acquiring magical items. This leads you to complete the five quests, earn amulet pieces, and craft a full amulet. Wearing this amulet gives you the power to kill Grendel and win the game.

Edit: beta and soon core game has a new puzzle game where you can earn lives and the puzzle game is a blast with good repeatability. The dev is constantly adding more stuff and upgrading this little gem, and this puzzle game is a great addition. Best of all theres no charge for all the updates and extra work they are doing, so no worries about buying a billion DLC or anything. I look forward to seeing what they will do next. Have played the Browser version of this game a long time ago. Though a simple game it is fun. Based on real time, or rather your computer clock for it's night and day cycles, the day/night cycle and even the season cycle has effects on how things in the game work. Like certain monsters only show at night, and flowers can be found more easily during summer then winter. ((All based on what your PC time/date says it is) The big bad Grendel, is brutal, luckily the game warns you when he starts getting close so you can get out of the area. He is not kill-able until you get to the end, and if you inspect him then it shows that he is immune to weapons, so prepare for hand to hand at the end against a boss that's not easy to take down. The over all game flow is simple, kill monsters, get stronger, get loot, kill more monsters, go deeper into the dungeon. The dragon and witch are very key to beating the game, as the dragon gives you the hints needed to know what quests need done and how to proceed, while the witch gives lots of buffs and keys needed to use on the dragon (though you find keys in the dungeon as well) The quests are a mix of easy and simple, to grinding, to small puzzles to figure out what to do. Nothing to complicated, and I felt it was a nice flow, not to much of any one kind of thing, yet not so easy as to be boring. For me I enjoyed growing and getting stronger more then actually beating the game. Additionally the game is still growing and evolving making it more enjoyable to come back and see the new features. Played as a beta tester for the game, so got to see some of the earlier versions, the dev has listened to the player base very well and the game has improved a lot since I first play and I expect that it will continue to grow and expand with additional players and feedback/opinions. One of the best devs I have encountered so far. Mainly because they are one of the few that listen to there players. Over all I think it has enough content to be worth the price, and I am sure it will grow making the purchase even more valuable with time. I hope others enjoy it as much as I have, and look forward to seeing what the dev does next Edit: the New leaderboards adds a competitive feature to the game, and some minor repeatability, the dev is very dedicated to improving on the game and expanding it to be even better. They have mentioned the magic shop will be added into the game along with looking into ways to make Multiplayer type functions work. I have high hopes for the games steady development and hope others will find the game as enjoyable as I have.
I've been following this developer on their web based game since the late 90s. I have very little time in this game so far, but if the quality is similar to the first Grendel's Cave game I played, this will be a big hit for myself personally! Looking forward to exploring more to see the differences and similarities hidden within this gem of a game! Thanks Beo for all of the years of memories!
A great reimagining of long running browser-based mud.
Maybe around 2050 GC will go 3D! Seriously though, there may still be some rough edges but they almost lend to the charm and this absolutely keeps the spirit of Grendel's Cave alive. Great job and thanks for all your years of hard work and dedication to this incredible enterprise, Beo! -GD
Brings me back! I am so happy to be playing this!! Thanks Beo! This is alot of fun, I really enjoy playing it!
Great Game! Long Live GC!
I am so happy this game is on steam. brings back my childhood. strongly suggest getting this game.
Great gamification of the well renowned epic... If you like RPGs with story and purpose you will love it. There's tons of weapons and armor sets to choose from which offer great variance and replay value... and to be honest it has much more in it than it costs...
awesome game. better graphics then what i was expecting. please keep up the great work
I loved the the original browser edition. The simplistic manner of levelling up always drew me back to this game over the past 20 or so years. Oh! and the stacking your equipment with enchantments! It was always so satisfying getting your first stoning weapon. The witch and the dragon were always like gambling, which I think is appealing to many Growing up, I wasn't even aware there was quests, or regions. All I knew was Cave... (p.s. I'm amused that I can Dark Souls myself by jumping off an edge in this version)
