It was a bit clunky at times but some fun levels and amusing abilities help make this cheap game worth a quick play through.
Short version: Pros: + Enjoyable visuals + Perfect for a younger audience + Cool powers and abilities + Simple, yet enjoyable story Cons: - Buggy - Sometimes controls can be unresponsive “Long” version: Zack Zero is a 2.5D side-scroller developed and published by Crocodile Entertainment. You play as the titular Zack Zero and must rescue Marlene, your girlfriend, from the evil clutches of Zulrog. I eyed this game for years and when the gem packs were introduced to Steam, I spent mine to get Zack Zero for “free”. It took me quite a few years to give it a fair shot, but I am glad I did. The story reminded me of a 90s Saturday-morning cartoon. Your girlfriend gets kidnapped by an evil monster and you must rescue her. It is very simple but charming, nonetheless. You get to watch narrated still images between some levels and these are a nice, kids-friendly way to keep children invested. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1511676443 Gameplay is mostly decent. Zack Zero has a suit which can control the elements, giving him a vast array of abilities to traverse the environment and deal with enemies. Each element has a few passive and activatable abilities. Earth makes you deal massive damage and become super tanky and immune to stagger, but it also makes you move at a snail’s pace and disables your jump, ice can be used to slow down time or freeze enemies and fire makes you move faster and allows you to float. The regular suit also has a few tricks of its own. Traversal is satisfying. Your basic movement speed is serviceable, but you can increase it by switching to the fire suit. This suit will also allow you to float for a while; when combines with your ability to double jump, you can overcome quick a few environmental hazards. I managed to “break” the game twice using this method; apparently, you were not supposed to be able to do that. That made some of the platforming rather easy. Combat is a bit mashy but I found it enjoyable. Especially after upgrading some of the abilities and unlocking a few new ones. Basic enemies are easy to defeat, but some of the tankier enemies require well-timed jumps to avoid and a little bit of cooldown management. It is not perfect but I feel like kids will enjoy it. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2776874389 The game can get quite challenging, but nothing too absurd. It takes a fair amount of time to get used to the controls, as they can get in the way and tend to be unresponsive. If you figure out what to do in those situations, however, they are fine. The only real downside is that the game is prone to crashing. Crashes were few and far between, so they did not upset me much. Though I did come across a crash that happened after a boss fight that required 10+ restarts (and boss battles). There are also plenty of collectibles that unlock more abilities. Graphically, I enjoyed Zack Zero’s style. It is very colorful and the environments are decently complex. Character models are a bit goofy but I feel like that is what they were going for. Even though I find the overall presentation charming, the actual graphics are a bit blurry and might not please players who prefer sharper visuals. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2777081745 Sound effects are nice and crunchy (earth powers sound so satisfying!). The narrator is clearly having a good time, as he does not take the story too seriously and I feel like children will be invested because of his high-energy performance with a very welcome sense of wonderment and adventure. A simple, inexpensive game that is, unfortunately, prone to crashing. It is still enjoyable, especially if you go in with the right mindset and knowing what to expect. I had a great, albeit flawed, time with it and would be down for a sequel. Final score: 7 out of 10. Zack Zero is a well-made hidden gem despite its flaws. It's an action platformer with a little bit of puzzle elements in it. It kinda reminds me of Trine due to its art style and the soundtrack but they have their unique charm as well. The protagonist Zack has three elemental powers: fire, ice, and rock and you're dependent on them. From what I understood, he's a galactic treasure hunter and one day, on his way to home, his beloved gets kidnapped and he enbarks on a journey to save her. As you can easily notice, it's a cliché story but just when it was getting interesting, it ended with a cliffhanger. Apart from that, many people claim that the game is extremely buggy but I have to deny those claims since I've only encountered one game-breaking bug on the lava stage and I was able to bypass it by switching my elemental power to ice or rock during that section after restarting the stage. However, it's an old game, so some people may have problems about running it on modern hardware. Long story short, Zack Zero is quite good. Don't get fooled by its price because it offers a lot more!

Well, that was surprisingly enjoyable. One of the better games I've probably gotten in some trashy bundle. The good Fun 2.5 puzzle platforming and beat 'em up action Colorful and attractive environments Decent soundtrack and sounds Enough hints from your "assistant" to avoid much frustration It was not too difficult and about 8 hours, so it didn't wear out its welcome. Worked just fine with my controller. The meh Sometimes it was a bit difficult differentiating the foreground from the background and from items I could interact with or couldn't. On the very first level I got stuck in some environmental glitch that forced me to restart. But that only happened once. Though monster design is solid, our protagonist looks a bit derpy, especially in close-ups. Not a lot of variation in boss AI, but since I tend to like my games on the easy side, I can't complain. The bad The hand drawn cut-scenes, story and narration are admittedly pretty crappy. The game ends on a cliffhanger that will never be resolved. Verdict: This got like a 4 on IGN when it was first released (though I think the bugs mentioned there have been stomped in the PC port). That is way harsh. I'd probably give it about a 7. If you're a metroidvania or puzzle platformer maestro, this will probably be too easy for you. But otherwise at full price $2.99, this is absolutely worth a go.
**Zack Zero (2013)** I restarted *Zack Zero* after a few hours because I had missed something important along the way, which caused me to get stuck. After restarting, I finally managed to get past that section. Before that, I had already put several hours into the game, so I’ve spent quite a bit of time with it. The core of the game is about collecting **orbs**: these let you upgrade your **suit**, become stronger, and unlock more options in combat. You have different powers at your disposal that you can cleverly chain into **combos** against enemies, which makes the fights surprisingly fun. It’s also definitely worth exploring every path and side route. You’ll regularly find **treasures**, although they’re mainly **collectibles**—they don’t really boost your stats, but they do give you that satisfying “found everything!” feeling. Another thing I’ve noticed is the nice **variety in the levels**, which keeps the game from feeling repetitive for too long. Genre-wise, I’d describe it so far as an **action platformer**. Visually, it’s fairly **simple**, but it still looks more than good enough for me. The **audio** is fine—nothing bad, but also not something particularly memorable. The **gameplay**, on the other hand, is a real strong point—it simply feels smooth and fun to play. All in all, I really enjoyed the game and finished it. According to *HowLongToBeat*, the game should take around **4 to 6 hours** to complete, And for **€2.99** (not on sale), it’s honestly **more than worth the money**. *Trading Cards *Achievements
This is an okay platformer, its story is a bit childish, but tolerable.
Whoever hid this little masterpiece from me owes me emotional compensation. At first glance it looks like one of those old-school side-scrolling platformers your childhood remembers with suspiciously perfect nostalgia. You know the type. Run. Jump. Punch things. Collect shiny nonsense. Question your life whenever spikes appear. Simple. Except... Zack Zero isn't pretending to be retro. It grabs the entire golden age of arcade platformers by the collar, gives it a gigantic bear hug, injects it with modern technology, and then politely says, "Watch this." And HOLY &#$%!, does it deliver. This isn't one of those games desperately screaming, "REMEMBER THE '90s? PLEASE VALIDATE ME!" No. It actually understands why those classics were fun. Then it builds on that foundation instead of living inside it like a nostalgia parasite. Every level feels alive. Every jump feels satisfying. Every enemy exists for one glorious purpose: To receive a professionally delivered fist to the face. And I happily volunteered for overtime. The controls? Crisper than fresh potato chips. The pacing? Smoother than butter on a hot pan. The gameplay loop? Dangerously addictive. This is one of those games where you tell yourself, "One more level." Then suddenly the birds are singing outside and you've accidentally invented tomorrow. The visuals deserve some love too. That gorgeous retro-inspired aesthetic isn't trying to copy the past pixel-for-pixel. It's celebrating it. It's like the classic platformers got a modern wardrobe, hit the gym for a few months, and came back looking ridiculously good. And the mechanics? OH BABY. When Zack Zero stares into the magnificent abyss of classic platforming...The classics stare right back and whisper, "Yeah... this kid gets it." That's not nostalgia. That's respect. There's a massive difference. The game constantly reminds you why this genre became legendary in the first place. No unnecessary bloat. No fifty-seven crafting systems. No battle pass asking you to eliminate twelve squirrels before Tuesday. Just fantastic platforming backed by developers who clearly understood the assignment. Games like this don't rely on nostalgia. They earn it. Zack Zero is proof that old-school platforming isn't dead. It simply put on a modern suit, stretched for a bit, and came back ready to embarrass half the industry. If you love classic side-scrollers, do yourself a favor. Play this. Your inner twelve-year-old will high-five your adult self while your reflexes file an official complaint. Now excuse me while I go uppercut another robot because apparently that's my personality now.
