Z: Escape is a dark themed runner-shooter platformer game. Z-87 awakens with no memory of who he was, or what he is. Destroying the bio pod in which he was trapped, Z notices the laboratory equipment all around the room. Something horrific has been done to him in this laboratory space station.

Few reviews here? Z Escape presents itself as a "dark themed runner, shooter and platformer".. sounds quite bombastic! The game has a minimalistic menu: a tutorial, play, a scoreboard and some extras (you'll basically be able to see the few videos and music tracks the game has.. quite a few, literally: two videos and five songs). Well, the soundtrack is quite crappy, the usual 8bit or MIDI or whatever reminds you of the '80s and '90s, while the videos are utterly crappy for what concerns graphics and everything else. And you can see the ending video even if you have never played the game before.. Apart from that, the whole game relies on a huge retro-looking interface: all the graphics will remind you at best the old NES games, and all the text fields are written with a plain MS Word white font. Which makes everything look very amateurish. The tutorial will explain that you'll play as Z, some kind of Megaman (I mean, looks the same as those SNES games), you'll have health points and ammo (auto-regenerating if you don't fire, but you can collect them too). A green bar on the upper part of the screen will show your level progression and points, which is something I really appreciated. The WASD keys (controller support looks enabled, but I had no XBOX joypad when playing this game these days unfortunately so I couldn't try it) are used to speed up and down, jump (W) and fire (F) - so yeah, no crouch for the S key since the main character will run automatically and you'll only be able to control him, jump and fire with no-remappable keys. Tutorial apart, the game offers us two modes - the normal one and the hard one, which tells us in caps lock that the !!! DAMAGE RECIEVED (sic.) is +300% !!! (yeah, no grammar controls or whatever else). And coming to the game itself - it could have been a nice idea, an indie take on Megaman and similar games, but everything's realized in a rushy way, it seems the whole thing has been programmed within some days. The unremappable keys are a huge issue, since F to fire when you're forced to use the WASD keys is very uncomfortable, and the fact that you can't have more than your basic gun isn't encouraging.. no upgrades at all, since the points have just the leaderboard goal. Plus, it gets annoying that you're always running to the right of the screen and you can only adjust the speed and jump around - and another main issue concerns the graphical compart. I love retro-looking games and such, but this one offers us the same background "space" scenario and grey platforms and doors, making it hard even to distinguish between enemies, walls, platforms and so on. The jump option too is quite crappy, you'll often be jumping without even seeing the right part of the screen where you'll want to land. Overall, this is a somehow appreciable attempt to an indie platformer/shooter, but the realization is really bad. It's not that hard, the enemies are almost all static and you can kill or avoid them quite easily, and the green progression bar on the upper part of the screen is a good addition.. but the levels look all the same, there are no upgrades and overall you'll be just keeping on running, firing and jumping within a crappy-designed world. I have read it's a mobile port, I can't imagine how one can play this game on a mobile phone if here on my gaming laptop I can't even see the right part of the screen when I'm jumping.. Not recommended.
Another revoked key that was legally purchased. The developer should know better. This is not the way to treat customers.
Developer sold keys and then mass revoked them before making this game F2P. In the end, anyone who paid received nothing for their money. I believe that developers that abuse the Steam processes should be banned from the platform. The game itself is crap. The graphics and level runs are circa 1980's. The only reason to spend more than 10 seconds on this is to make the point that developers that sell and then revoke keys without proper cause should be banned from the Steam platform. The developer presumably did not get fully paid by the retailer who sold keys, although no proof of this is offered. To get Steam to mass revoke keys they have to lie and report that the keys were stolen. Rather than acknowledge a bad business decision, the developer chooses to punish the paying customers, the only ones who actually did nothing wrong. BAN THESE DEVELOPERS FROM STEAM!
dev swindler who snatched the keys promised to give us new "did not" and f2p puts it without solving the big mistake he made with the people who support your game, be careful and do not leave your money in this dev.

So let's get this out of the way, I had originally purchased this game from a Bundle (Gogobundle) and when the site went belly up and didn't pay the Devs, some of them started revoking keys. This Dev was one of them. Should they have done that? No! We basically had our money scammed from us, and really screws over the customers. The Devs should have cut their losses and be glad people were playing their games. Some people seem to take it too far like threatening the Dev, like come on you spent like maybe $0.25 on this game. Had this game been like a $50 I can understand being upset more, but people like to hate mob way to easily. Some have offered to give new keys back if you emailed them, but most didn't. This Dev stated that if you emailed him you would get a key back. Well that didn't happen exactly like that. The Dev ended up making the game Free... BUT you may have noticed that there is a DLC. Since I had given my email, the Dev reached out to me and gave me a key for the DLC. Now with that, let's move on! There is 2 versions of the game, the original, and the "remaster" version. Both can be selected from the main menu. The classic version is a side scrolling runner, with the aim of making it to the end, in one go! You will always be moving, with the choice to slow down or speed up. I've gave it a few tries and could only make it just past half way. It's pretty simple and not too hard, just a matter of learning where the enemies are. Some of the achievements will be hard, like not getting hit and beating it in 4 min. It's interesting, but nothing ground breaking. Now, for the remastered version... I really did not like! It follows the same idea as the classic, but gives you free movement and has some story elements. You escape your prison and have to escape your creators. Simple story. Now this time there is different weapon pick ups, like a spread shot, lazer, explosive, and a spinning shot (the most useless weapon.) The other addition is now you have 3 lives, which I didn't really lose until I got to the "Kill Room" which has an instant death trap. Once you use up all 3 lives it's game over and will have to start over. For the most part it's pretty easy, but I do have some major complaints. The hit boxes seem to be wonky. Some times I can hit an enemy no problems, other times my shots go right through, or my explosion doesn't deal any damage. But nothing compares to the one enemy type, the flying drone thing. These things you have to kill at a distance, as if you active them, they fly towards you in a blink of an eye and explode, dealing quite a bit of damage. You can't dodge this either!! There is even bosses this time around, and again are pretty easy, especially when you go into them with a weapon power. Spam shoot and you win. Also, some of this music sounds really familiar, but I can't quite say where I've heard it from. Now the last part of the game has a flying shmup style mini-game, and it's honestly the worst. Your ship moves painfully slow, so good luck avoiding stuff. Your hitbox is all over the place, so expect to get hit lots and miss powerups! You get the same power ups as normal, but the problem is the one is utter useless! I'm talking about the swirly one (F) as this weapon shot will faze through asteroids, something you need to be able to blow up to try and avoid taking damage! The goal of this mini game is to destroy 150 enemy ships, yes just ships! This will take forever, as it will spawn more asteroids than ships. I played for 10 min, and only killed 30 ships! I just gave up as it just got boring super fast. Now what does the DLC add? Nothing really special. A "Training Room" that lets you jump to the boss fights to fight then back to the select room. The other is jumping to the shmup mini game. It's honestly not worth it. In the end, I can't say I enjoyed it, or hated it. Since Valve doesn't give us an in-between option, and with all the other sh*t surrounding the game, I'll have to give it a Not Recommend. To the Dev, keep working hard at it!
