A Modest Platforming Effort with More Friction Than Fun
Yury is a small indie platformer that aims to deliver a straightforward, skill-based experience built around jumping, timing, and navigating simple obstacle courses. On paper, it follows a familiar formula inspired by classic 2D platformers. In practice, however, the game struggles to turn its ideas into a consistently enjoyable experience. The core gameplay revolves around precise movement and avoiding hazards. Levels are short and clearly structured, and the rules are easy to understand from the start. Unfortunately, the execution doesn’t always support the intent. Controls feel stiff, jumps lack precision, and momentum can behave unpredictably. In a genre where responsiveness is everything, these issues quickly become frustrating. Level design is serviceable but unremarkable. Early stages introduce mechanics clearly enough, but later levels rely heavily on repetition rather than creativity. Difficulty increases mostly through tighter timing and denser obstacle placement instead of new ideas, which can make progression feel more exhausting than rewarding. Visually, Yury adopts a simple, minimalist art style. While clean and readable, it lacks personality and variety. Environments blend together, animations are basic, and there’s little visual feedback to reinforce player actions. Audio design follows the same trend, functional but forgettable, with repetitive sound effects and minimal musical presence. The game’s biggest problem is that it doesn’t offer much incentive to push through its rough edges. There’s no narrative hook, no meaningful progression system, and little sense of payoff for overcoming difficult sections. As a result, the experience feels flat, even when you manage to complete challenging parts. Ultimately, Yury feels like an earnest attempt at a traditional platformer that needed more refinement. Players who are very tolerant of rough mechanics may find some enjoyment, but most will likely struggle to stay engaged for long.
The Good:
- Simple concept that’s easy to understand. - Short levels suitable for quick attempts. - Minimalist presentation keeps the screen readable.
The Bad:
- Stiff controls and imprecise jumping. - Repetitive level design with little creativity. - Lack of polish in visuals, audio, and feedback.
