YS will always be a fantastic experience. Had a few issues with colors in the game, nothing that would stop me to finish it. Somewhat of a slow start compared to other YS's, but once the mechanics catch up, the game even ends a little to fast. All in all, if you are reading this review your are purchasing the wrong game. Make sure to purchase Proud Nordics and not this version.

This was my first ever exposure to the Ys series, but thankfully the story is self contained to this game. Speaking of the story, the story was quite enjoyable, and as a Norwegian I can appreciate a lot of the inspiration and themes from Viking culture. Though I gotta say that some of the names of the other in-universe countries made me chuckle, "Ispania" and "Danmerk" being some of them. The only real negaitive I can say is that the game feels a bit limited in the begining, but it opens up more later. All in all, it's not a super huge game, but the gameplay and story is quite enjoyable. It's worthwhile to check out if you're already interested
first off get the proud version instead. But for my time with this one... Pros: The music once again from the people of YS is out of the park, all of the combat, boat included, are top stuff and very fluid. The dialog feels very natural with your party/crew. Hardly any missables this time around as apposed to YS9 Grinding is not at all required The power to find new islands and go where you want or fast travel there is a breath of fresh air after the last game's town. The fact that each time the music changes you can make it list off which track it is. Cons: It's too easy. Like I played my first time on nightmare and didn't hit double digits in the game overs. I think this is because they made the revive system too forgiving. I'm talking beating super boss first try and beating foes ranked level 77 while I'm level 31 No rainbow drop recipe in the game... If you know you know. No one can accurately say what is in this game for collectables or missables due to the proud version. Mastering skills does nothing this time around nor achivment based (Granted some new skills will unlock depending on mastery but not all) The seagull bar...... (If you're missing 4 food entries it's here.) And the cool but I couldn't test/use. The fact this game allows co-op is a great touch. There are enough bottles that even a nightmare run can get all achivments in one go. All in all I'd call this game a slam dunk and a real fun time. Combat if quick enough to let you feel powerful but the heavy hitters still make sure you're engauged. If you want a game somewhere along the lines of Xenoblade, or tales of, with an interesting story and lots of exploring then give this/proud nordics a chance!
32:9 works out of the box. Though I don't think you can choose the placement of the UI. Not really an issue in this game though. I enjoyed this game. I played Oath in Felghana about 14 years ago and it's quite different. Combat and exploration though, feel familiar, and that's a good thing. Just far less challenge. If you want a casual Ys experience, I imagine this is the game to go with. As for story, well they sure show their genius here like in any JRPG. You see, by making it so bad, and causing your intelligence to be so insulted, you can't help but focus only on the cool gameplay. Works every time. Honestly though, I skipped at least 95% of scenes. Somehow I doubt I missed anything. Just play the game.
I just finally got this and started playing it today around 8pm.. It's now 2am as I very reluctantly turn it off knowing I should sleep tonight as i could easily pull an all-nighter playing this. I'm playing back through some games and finally playing others as I work my way through the entire series in timeline order; Origin, Chronicles (Book) 1 and 2. Nordics, Memories of Celceta, Oath in Felghana, Lacrimosa of Dana, Ark of Napishtim, Seven, then Monstrom Nox. The first one I ever played and beat was Ark of Napishtim.. I had no idea any backstory of anyone or anything. While you dont need to play the others to enjoy the individual adventures, I do recommend it to understand references; Who is Dogi and the doctor? What stormwall surrounding Esteria? (Chronicles is a bit odd with its bump attack system, but easy enough to get the hang of.) Being as it is the newest in the series, obviously the graphics are absolutely amazing. Almost the majority of the game has voice acting.. except in a few random parts and it makes no sense why, other than too many nameless NPCs. The story became intriguing the moment the "duos" mechanic is introduced. Im also liking where i think theyll be taking Karja's character development. The two things i wish they would change is 1) duos mode. You either need to approach the enemy at the speed of an escort quest or turn it off every time you want to close distance (so far, anyway.) Blocking enemy attacks also doesnt make much sense; you can block the unblockable, anticipated attacks, but some normal attacks break your defenses? And you dont know the attack will break it until they hit you? 2) Adol's random voice lines. Hes not exactly silent protagonist, but hes always been silent enough to immerse you more into the character. i dont recall him ever having actual voice lines in parts like the story or approaching the healing stones and its thrown me off a few times. 9/10! Would be 10/10 if the duos mode wasnt the way that it is, but being a core combat mechanic loses it a point. That doesnt change that ill be binge playing this game to completion!
