A battle arena title that balances fanservice and serious competitive action
This is an arena-based versus action game that puts fanservice front and center through the crossover of major Falcom characters from recent years, while still retaining a solid core as an action game. Controls are simple, but the design emphasizes mobility through chase dashes and jumping, where positioning and spacing directly determine control of offense and defense. Unlike traditional fighting games focused on frame-by-frame exchanges, the game strongly favors a constantly moving, chaotic “scramble” style of combat. In battle, players build SP through normal and charged attacks, then make situational use of pre-slotted skills. Once the EX gauge is filled, flashy super moves can be unleashed, and the presence of support character calls and emergency escape options that consume HP keeps matches lively at all times. Guarding, dodging, and chase actions all consume stamina, so over-reliance on defense can quickly lead to collapse. Including momentum shifts created by well-timed “Flash Guards,” the system consistently demands sound judgment on both offense and defense. In terms of modes, the game offers a story mode that progresses through narrative, a tournament mode focused on consecutive battles, and free battle options with detailed rule customization, making it more than just a versus-only experience. Points earned from battles can be used to purchase and enhance equipment and skills, preserving an RPG-like feel of growth and repeated unlocks. There is also a gallery component that allows players to collect BGM and artwork. The 2025 version significantly reworks the original handheld release for modern environments. Smooth visuals at 4K resolution and 60fps, rollback-based online versus play, widescreen support, and the addition of English voice acting all contribute to a noticeable improvement in overall playability. Homages to Falcom’s past works remain scattered throughout, resulting in a design packed with elements that become increasingly enjoyable the more familiar you are with classic Falcom titles, often prompting a knowing smile. While it is not a competitive fighter taken to the extreme, its value as a fast, flashy, fan-oriented arena action game refined for modern play is substantial. For those familiar with the original era, it offers nostalgia and rediscovery, while newcomers are presented with a brisk and accessible chaotic battle experience. HHF-chan comment: “This is a chaotic Falcom character brawl. The story kind of gives off a certain 3rd vibe, but if it feels off, just let it slide. Also, anyone who recently played ‘Trails in the Sky the 1st’ should be careful—there are spoilers, so watch out!”
Check out our Steam curator (link) , YouTube channel (link), and X(Twitter) (link)!
I bought this to be a quick game to play once in a while to enjoy some Falcom content but ended up getting super into it and 100%-ing the game, which is something I rarely ever do. This game is grindy but strangely addictive, but also would be fun as I originally intended, as a fun arena fighter to play once in a while with some cool Falcom stages, themes, and characters. I did play Ys Seven this year in anticipation for this game, and I'm very glad I did, because this game goes hard on Ys Seven content. Since that game was fresh in my mind, all of the characters, stages and movesets were still familiar. I loved the combat in that game so this is really no different, except that flash guarding is not as super easy. Trails in the Sky is well-represented and gives us a taste of the Trails world from before Rean and his harem were everywhere. Hearing new voiced lines from these beloved characters after so much time was also quite the treat. I mostly played in Japanese but I did try the English dub and the voices fit the vibes of the characters and were well-executed. I got to experience multiplayer a bit playing with my brother in-person, and it was fun to try different characters and see what level of handicap to put on the opposing team to make for a good battle, since not all characters are equally powered (sorry Olivier, I still love you though). Experimenting with supports in friendly multiplayer matches is also really fun (we playing with both of us on the same time and fighting teams of 2 CPUs). I did not try network play but local co-op was smooth and fast-paced. The main thing that kept me grinding is the library of Falcom songs included - I made sure to purchase those from the shop as soon as it was feasible. I would set the free play stages to "random BGM" and almost every track was a treat. Most of early Falcom is represented, although some favorite tracks, such as "To Make the End of Battle" are not included. "To Make the End of Digging" from Gurumin was a nice inclusion instead, and many of the songs were either new to me or unheard by me in years. Overall, definitely recommend this hands-down to any Ys Seven fan, and also to most Falcom fans. For non-Falcom fans, probably not worth a play unless gameplay videos of this type of combat look especially appealing to you!
very epic game! i am so happy it got localized so more people can try it! :D
Very neat and well-managed port of the Japanese-Only PSP title. The crossover of these two Falcom IPs were given their due all while adding considerable care for what a remaster should be. This is not even considering the attention and work the team has done for the online battle modes that include cross-play across all platforms flawlessly. My only complaint is the lack of Co-Op play in story or arcade modes though is otherwise a solid buy for the price. Well done.
I'm of two minds about recommending this. The positive is this release is damn near perfect. Falcom have done an incredible job of preserving and updating this game, you could not ask for better. Problem this? They've done all that work for -this- game. And this game is to be quite frank, irredeemably ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awful. It gets absolutely not a single thing right, not as an Ys game, a Trails game or just as a fighting game in general. There is nothing to like here. Hitstun in combat is completely inconsistent to the point of feeling totally random, EXTRA skills are straight up without any exaggeration the single worst implementation of a super mechanic I have ever seen in any fighting game, they come out instantly, cannot be blocked and can often times instantly (or near instantly) kill you. Your only option is to daigo parry it or eat ♥♥♥♥ and die. Characters all feel homogeneous too. Fantastic work from a games preservation standpoint, however this aint a game that was necessarily worth preserving in the first place.
Very good intense fast paced combat action game, even more fun than modern games.
ORENO BANDANA BARRIER RISING SUUUN METEOR BREAKKKKKK
Perhaps one the biggest out of nowhere surprise releases of the year. Ys vs Trails was one of those game I had assumed too niche to ever see a PC release, but I was proven wrong. Now the game doesn't offer some amazing hidden additional story to the main franchises, but it is surprisingly interesting fighting game. Although only "Sky" characters from Trails series and "Ys seven" characters from Ys series plus few others are playable. The customization of characters loadouts is surprisingly deep as each character has slightly different strengths and weaknesses(speed, range, reach, etc.). which are rather faithful to their original skills from their own games. Support characters and items which you can either have many small ones or few big ones can change you character playstyle quite a lot from boring stat boost to more fundamental changes how they play out. You also get lot of bonus content in a form of intro movies/wallpapers/soundtracks from various Falcom games mainly concentrating on Ys and Trails, but also some nods to Zwei/Gurumin/Vantage/Sorcerer/Xanadu franchises. There is even a whole dedicated music player included which is actually really good and contains several hours of music from Falcom classics titles. Now the game doesn't serve as very good internet multiplayer game due to low player numbers, but as a party game it is really good.
