7/10 The game starts with Adol Christin suffering from severe amnesia after what I initially assumed was the fantasy equivalent of long-term abuse of benzodiazepines. This time, you are tasked with mapping the great forest of Celceta, in a region loosely inspired by Spain — hence names like Sancho and Panza casually walking with their boss Leo (comic relief who is a Don Quixote-inspired character). System-wise, this is a very natural evolution of Ys Seven. You control Adol alongside two active party members and can swap between them instantly during combat. The combat is fast, snappy and responsive as usual for the series, and the party system works well enough to keep battles dynamic throughout the game. That said, I found the game far too easy on Normal difficulty. Outside of accidentally running into a couple of absurdly high-level overworld enemies, the game offers almost no challenge whatsoever. Most encounters can be brute-forced without much thought, which made the combat lose some of its excitement over time. The camera is also surprisingly annoying. It constantly feels too zoomed in, especially in tighter areas, and for some reason I found myself manually adjusting it all the time throughout the game. It is not game-breaking, but it becomes one of those low-level irritations that slowly wears you down over a long playthrough. Visually, this is very clearly a port of a Vita game, so set your expectations accordingly. The graphics are not bad, but they are definitely dated. Personally, I do not really care much about graphics in Ys games, so this never bothered me too much. The story is a mixed bag. I did appreciate finally getting some background on Adol as a child and learning more about why he became an adventurer in the first place. There are also some neat connections to earlier games, especially Ys I & II and Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim, which longtime fans will probably enjoy. Unfortunately, the actual plot becomes increasingly weird as it goes on, and the ending leaves a lot to be desired. The writing also falls into some of the worst anime exposition habits imaginable, where every single character has to chime in during conversations with completely unnecessary dialogue. Normally I can tolerate — or even enjoy — this kind of thing in JRPGs, but here it became genuinely grating because it constantly kills the pacing of cutscenes that should have moved much faster. I wish Falcom would let us punch characters in the face every time someone starts talking nonsense. My biggest disappointment was the exploration. For a game heavily centered around mapping the forest, the map completion system is borderline atrocious. Due to what feels like genuinely poor programming, many areas simply will not register properly unless you spend your time aggressively hugging walls. The entire system feels rushed and weirdly unpolished for a game so heavily focused on exploration. Even as someone who normally does not care much about 100% completion, I found this completely mind-boggling. If you are a completionist, use a guide from the start so you can avoid resorting to benzos like Adol. I also found the level design, bosses and soundtrack somewhat uninspired compared to previous Ys games, even though a few tracks still stand out. So far, playing the series in release order, this is easily my least favorite Ys title. But even a weaker Ys game is still a good action RPG in my book. It never became outright bad — just consistently okay.
Yet another fantastic addition to the Ys series. I loved it just like I loved pretty much every other game. Great stuff!
И это тот редкий случай, когда я, игрок прошедший Tales of..., Final Fantasy, Persona, могу сказать: Memories of Celceta ощущается абсолютно великолепно даже сейчас.
