big fan of survivor games, very much my style currently. But this game I wouldn't recommend to anyone sadly. even though im a fan of the idea of the game, this is the worst one I've played so far (played vampire survivors, soulstone survivors & nomad survival). -- Don't get tricked: The steam store page says its a roguelite, but it is a rogue-like, so no meta-progression of which I'm fond of so every run feels worthwhile. Also, there's no encyclopedia for all relics/anything that you've unlocked. And no stats or anything to keep track of besides "losses" & "wins". I'll play it for some more time to get a few more achievements, and that'll be it. not good.
was looking for a chess rougelike. not quite what i thought up but close. needs more chess like gameplay and not constant bullet hell you dont have much time to really think about where to move and you rely solely on the buffs and aoe attacks more than an actual chess style combat. not a bad game but wont continue after one hour of playing.
tepe kurgu.
Chess Survivors by Aarimous is a strikingly inventive take on the increasingly saturated survivors-like genre, managing to carve out a distinct identity by fusing real-time survival mechanics with the rigid, rule-based movement system of chess. What initially sounds like a novelty—bullet heaven gameplay constrained by chess logic—quickly proves to be a genuinely thoughtful design choice that reshapes how players approach positioning, threat assessment, and moment-to-moment decision-making. Rather than simply dodging swarms of enemies through reflex, the game asks you to think spatially, turning every movement into a calculated risk. At the center of the experience is its grid-based battlefield, where both the player and enemies operate according to recognizable chess rules. This is not just a thematic overlay but a fundamental gameplay system. Enemies modeled after rooks, bishops, knights, and queens move exactly as expected, forcing players to anticipate patterns and control space rather than react blindly. The result is a constant mental balancing act: you are simultaneously navigating a real-time survival scenario while solving positioning puzzles in rapid succession. Safe tiles can become dangerous in an instant, and the pressure escalates as more enemy types overlap their movement patterns. This creates a unique form of tension that feels different from traditional survivors-likes, where chaos is often managed through movement speed alone. Despite this added layer of strategy, the game retains the addictive progression loop that defines the genre. Defeating enemies yields experience, which leads to level-ups and the opportunity to select upgrades that enhance your offensive and defensive capabilities. Over the course of a run, these upgrades stack into increasingly powerful combinations, allowing players to evolve from a fragile piece on the board into a dominating force capable of clearing entire clusters of enemies. There is a satisfying sense of escalation here, particularly when synergistic builds come together and dramatically shift the pace of the game. This balance between controlled strategy and explosive power growth gives Chess Survivors a rhythm that feels both measured and exhilarating. Character variety adds another layer of depth, with each playable unit offering a distinct approach to the grid. Some emphasize mobility, others focus on damage output or unique abilities, and experimenting with these differences becomes a key part of the game’s appeal. Unlocking new characters and upgrades provides a steady sense of progression across multiple runs, encouraging players to revisit the game and refine their strategies. While the system is not overwhelmingly complex, it offers enough variation to keep the experience engaging without becoming unwieldy. The pacing is particularly well handled. Early stages allow players to familiarize themselves with movement patterns and establish a build, while later phases introduce increasingly dense and overlapping threats that push decision-making to its limits. There is a clear arc within each run, moving from cautious exploration to near-chaotic survival scenarios where every move must be made with precision. This escalation is one of the game’s strongest qualities, as it keeps tension high without feeling unfair. Failures tend to feel like the result of misjudgment rather than randomness, which reinforces the game’s strategic foundation. Visually, the game opts for a clean and functional pixel-art style that prioritizes readability. This is a crucial choice given how much the gameplay relies on quickly interpreting enemy positions and movement patterns. Each piece is immediately recognizable, and the grid structure remains clear even during the most chaotic moments. While the presentation is not particularly elaborate, it serves its purpose effectively. The audio design, while competent, is less memorable, providing a fitting backdrop without significantly enhancing the experience. The main limitation of Chess Survivors lies in its scope. While the core mechanics are strong and engaging, the overall content offering feels somewhat limited. Environments lack variety, and after several runs, the repetition becomes more noticeable. The game does not take long to explore most of what it has to offer, which can leave players wanting a deeper pool of stages, enemies, or progression systems. Additionally, the reliance on chess-based movement, while innovative, may present a learning curve for players unfamiliar with how each piece operates, potentially making the early experience feel less accessible. Even with these shortcomings, Chess Survivors stands out as a smart and well-executed experiment. It takes a familiar genre and injects it with a layer of strategic thinking that meaningfully changes how it is played, without sacrificing the immediacy and satisfaction that make survivors-likes so compelling. The fusion of calculated movement and escalating chaos creates a gameplay loop that feels fresh, rewarding, and consistently engaging within its runtime. In the end, Chess Survivors succeeds by focusing on a strong central idea and building around it with clarity and confidence. It may not offer the depth or longevity of larger titles in the genre, but its originality and tight design make it a memorable experience that stands apart from its peers. For players looking for a twist on the survivors formula that rewards both quick thinking and strategic foresight, it is an easy recommendation. Rating: 8/10
Fun, fast-paced roguelike reminiscent of Crypt of the Necrodancer. Only paid a dollar for it in a bundle so definitely worth it.
I couldn't really do this game, it was achingly slow. if you loved vampire survivors but felt it needed more movement quirks, you might like this. unfortunately, i couldnt find much in it.
I was interested to see how Chess + Survivors would work and it definitely works. Not the most filled out or balanced but it's nice to click on specific tiles and see the results instead of just running around and hoping pixels don't overlap too much.
