First off Yatagarasu is a dinosaur. But that isn't a problem for me...I love old school fighters. Heck, a couple of my favorite fighters of all time are Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Samurai Shodown 4. Here is the big problem with it: this is not a sequel...this is version 1.1. (Or maybe 1.01 would be more accurate.) I backed Attack on Cataclysm way back in the day. That was like 10 years ago....and the game has not really advanced in that time other than a few new characters. That is it. its been 10 years, and seeing the game return gave me hope that there have been some sort of changes to make it better. But instead it is still the same game you may have (but probably didn't) play and forgotten you had. Really this game is so boldly generic, that is should be on Playstation....and I mean the first Playstation...not 5. And here is the best advice I can give you: first thing you will want to do after booting up the game is to: 1. go straight to the options 2. find the commentary master volume 3. and set it to 0. I didn't like the commentary in the first, and I am not doing it in this one either. Thankfully it has that option, because if not I was ready to unplug my speakers, and play this game in silence. I am still stuck seeing their faces appear every time they have to say something.....but there is something much worse. This version now does screenshots of when there is a counter or something big happens. It then pastes the thumbnails of those screenshots in the top middle of the screen for around 5 seconds during the match and in the way! Ever tried playing a fighting game with a window over your game window? Well...now you can anytime something big happens. I am not going to lie....this game is about 20 years behind when it should have released. Now it is 100% guaranteed to be dead on arrival. If you have never played a Yatagarasu game, then this is already $5 overpriced for you. If you have...then it is $15 overpriced for you. If you want old school, you can pick up KOF 98 for the same price, and it is a far better experience. Edit for steam deck users: don't bother. the game is borked when you go into full screen. I have tried just booting, GE, and Experimental, and everything goes to a black screen when you change the resolution to full screen. You could play it in a window though....like a 640x480 window (since there is no option to change the window size and you can't resize it yourself), if that sounds fun. Honestly this might have worked better if it was $5 "Decade Pass 1" DLC. At least there would be no delusions about what you are really getting. But instead... Yatagarasu Enter the Eastward....Exit the Series.
I have the first game but I was not a backer for the original indiegogo campaign. The reason I states that is because I will be comparing this game to the previous version a lot. The short version is that this is the same as the previous game with extra stages, 3 new characters and some QOL improvement BUT no rollback sadly. I was expecting the game to cost more than it did, however I will be refunding the game because of the lack of roll back in 2024. The devs had 9 years to implement it and I do not want to reward stupidity. The longer version: The game ditched the startup menu of the previous game which is a huge improvement, the game works on steam deck OLED fine (I did try the game on both PC and Deck). The game is still at 480p and can go full screen when using on PC. I tried online ranked quickly and fought a Japanese player (at the time of review I am located in Canada) and as expected, it was bad, however no port forwarding was needed unlike the previous game. Edit: The triggers buttons work fine when using the game on Windows, not sure what happened when I first tried but I could not set these buttons up so for sake of transparency, those work just fine now. One of the new feature is a small screenshot when you get punished showing the action you (or your opponent) performed when punished. This is a nice idea but I wish they spent their time on something more useful for the success of the game. The 3 new characters are well made, they are the same quality as the rest of the cast. The game has all the usual menus: arcade, story, training, versus, online, options, records, online records If you never played the first game, this one is a great fighting game, as was the first game. Some people mentioned that there are new moves, however I was unable to find any with the characters I tried. I do not recommend the game, the lack of rollback netcode in 2024 is unforgivable, especially when the game is just a small update of the previous game. If things change then I may update the review. Please ask questions if you have any and I will try to reply.
I backed the original Yatagarasu about a decade ago, and to this day, gameplay-wise Yata is still my favorite indie FG. This is basically the exact same game, with 3 new characters (which admittedly are excellently designed), stages and a few QoL additions. That's it. The game lacks many features that are standard to modern games, it feels ANCIENT, like a PC game from the early 2000s. Yatagarasu AoC already felt outdated 10 years ago, but at least back in the day you could excuse it because the dev team was pretty small and it was an indie project. How can anyone defend this in 2024, however? Not only that but they pretty much fixed none of the issues the original had. The game still doesn't have rollback even though they promised it, fullscreen mode still stretches the image and makes it look awful since the game's native aspect ratio is 4:3, the game still doesn't recognize X-input triggers, in-game music still doesn't loop properly. I love Yata and I really like the Dev Team's design philosophy when it comes to gameplay, but this is just inexcusably lazy, even if the 3 new characters are impeccably made. I won't be refunding, I really just love the gameplay that much and I still consider myself a fan of the original vision and project, but there's no way I can honestly recommend this to anyone.
This is just hilariously bad/sad. It's a sequel (or more like re-release with a few new characters) of my favorite fighting game (mechanically) of all time, but would not recommend the purchase to anyone except super die-hard fans of the existing game, and even that comes with a "maybe". This is basically as lazy as a release can get. -Game opens in tiny windowed mode. -To change your nickname (or any settings at all), you have to browse to a folder, open a launcher and do changes there. -No keyboard keybind support. -Triggers on controller don't register (lol). -Delay-based netcode, no rollback. And even that has to be manually adjusted (manually press O and P to change the delay during character select. How are you supposed to know?) -Online Lobby UI and practically every menu in the game is archaic and clunky. Basically development debug tier. -How do I change my online team's name and information? Who knows. -How does the avatar icon upload system work? Does it even work? Who knows. -Character portraits during a match still have some old style portraits while some chars have new style portraits. -Lacking movelists for characters (lol...) -Some of the stages (and ost) are just plain ugly to the point that I wish they didn't exist. Never have I thought like this about a fighting game stage before, but it still holds true for yatagarasu. -The whole commentator feature is annoying and should be off by default. -The new "pop up" feature that happens when two attacks clash is... I don't even know. If I had to come up with a way to waste development time, I wouldn't even come up with this. Insane waste of time. etc. etc. etc. the list goes on but let's stop there for now. Basically everything except the gameplay sucks and it all is just inexcusable after 7 years of "development". The developer would not need to do a lot of work to improve any of this. It is just plain laziness. And it completely boggles my mind how little they can care about such a great core fighting game. HOPEFULLY though this new release (without a publisher?) is a sign that they have even a hint of care and can update the game more easily. Crossing my fingers and will update the review as soon as something positive happens.
I'm not going to make a long-winded review on this because I just can't since it's this game in particular that we're talking about. With that out of the way...... Yatagarasu: Enter The Eastward is a 1 vs 1 fighting game made by a team comprised of 3 former SNK devs. If you're here and wondering why there are 2 versions of this game with the other called "Attack on Cataclysm", that's because "Enter the Eastward" is the sequel to AoC but in truth.....this isn't really a sequel but just an update to AoC without actually updating AoC but instead forcing you to pay full indie price for the whole game even if you own the AoC. There is NOTHING in this version remotely new coming from Attack on Cataclysm......NOTHING and if there is, it's not even noticable. The only thing this version of Yatagarasu has in stored for players is the addition of 3 additional characters (and stages) that were included in the arcade version of the game. These characters have more than likely been in the arcade version for years with us just now getting them in the Steam version. These characters were first announced back in 2018 and we're just now getting them.....yeah, these devs are slow....hella slow on updating their game. But this review is dragging on so let me get to the point and end this review. There are technical issues with this game like with the sound being overly loud and with no way of setting the game volume down at all (Yeah, the sound settings are broke and don't work.....set it under 10, sound is off and set it at 10 or over, it's by default loud and on at all times). The game user interphase is nowhere up to snuff to today's standards and looks cluttered and outdated like the game is stuck back in it's vanilla iteration back in 2008. The devs took nothing into consideration and did the bare minimal and just released it onto the public. The most glaring issue with this game is that the online play. This game does NOT have rollback netcode......SOMETHING THAT THE DEVS ARE OBLIGATED TO PUT INTO THE GAME. The reason I said this is because back during the release of Attack on Cataclysm, the game had an indiegogo campaign and one of the stretch goals were to add rollback netcode into the game (GGPO) and that stretch goal was met. Players have been waiting for this since AoC's release and the devs have not delivered on their obligation but instead released an arcade version of the game and a updated arcade version (Enter the Eastward) since then. This is since Aug 8, 2013 when the stretch goal was met. I'll say this now, this update isn't worth the asking price of what the devs are asking for. Actually, I would go as far as to suggest not supporting them or this release at all until GGPO or an equivalent version of rollback is added into the game (I had to buy the game in order to put a review out so yeah....). Even with my time spent with this version of the game, I'll just go off based on my experience with AoC added with this as my claim for this game. Yatagarasu Devs, you guys have an obligation to your supporters to add rollback. I don't know what the hell you guys been doing all these years up to this point to only release this game in the face of all of those who gave you support money only to not fulfill that obligation for rollback but this makes you all look like a scumbag dev team to all of us. If you prove us wrong, then that's good but it doesn't change all the goodwill wasted on you after all of these years. Our trust in you is already gone so unless you can do something worth while and actually do some work on this version of the game to make it more presentable to the public and your fans, I'll stick with my opinion of you guys as lying and thieving devs till then. If you still want this game but don't want to support the devs, just look for a warez version as the game is so ancient, you can literally run this game without Steam.
As a warning, this game is not going to be for most people reading this. The game is old, its backend is ancient, and its online functionality would have been considered outdated 15 years ago. And no, there's no rollback. This is a game that you are either going to be playing with mates locally or not at all. I understand this is going to be a dealbreaker for most people, and I get it. That said, I love Yatagarasu, and it getting an update out of the blue something like ten years after its original English launch is nothing short of a dream for me. This is easily one of my favorite fighting games, hands down. The game is heavily inspired by Third Strike and pulls from two decades of competitive knowledge to create something that plays absolutely magnificently. If you're a fan of 3s, you are going to feel right at home here. The changes to the game for this version are, admittedly, relatively small--3 new characters, a handful of stages, and balance and move adjustments and additions for the whole cast. Pretty standard incremental revision stuff, the kind that the genre has been getting since the early days. What really sells this version for me is that it runs on the Steam Deck without much effort, unlike the original version, which means that I've got an easy and portable Yata setup for locals, which I could not be happier about. I can't recommend this game for everyone, but if you're a fan of 3s and you've got buddies or a local scene to play with, you need to pick this up.
I am Delay Based Netcode's strongest soldier
I really do like this game. It's very fun and has some interesting characters/mechanics. Although I can't say I recommend it until goes on sale since the game is still pretty rough on a technical rollback. Also, while I do understand the sentiment that the devs punked out on rollback, it is absolutely ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up most of the reviews on here are just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on the devs steam Review Score just to prove a point. You're not proving anything. You're literally DESTROYING an indie game that barely has any players anyways. And for what? So you can flex your Internet Points? GTFO here. Capcom/Bamco are charging most of y'all accessories/cosmetics for ACTUAL money. And you're giving this game ♥♥♥♥ for not having rollback? GTFOH with that garbage.
