After sinking dozens of hours into Xenonauts, I can confidently say it's the most faithful spiritual successor to classic X-COM ever made — if you want that brutal Cold War alien-defense experience without the streamlining of the newer XCOM titles, this is it. The tactical combat is unforgiving in all the right ways: I've had soldiers blow themselves up with forgotten C4 timers, watched desperate last-stand defenses succeed against all odds, and felt genuine dread creeping into alien bases with inadequate gear. The strategic layer — managing bases, intercepting UFOs, juggling international funding — is deeply satisfying, and the air combat actually makes dogfighting fun rather than the one-click afterthought it was in the original. My biggest advice: enable the Community Edition branch immediately from the Steam beta settings, as it smooths out a lot of the rough edges and balance issues in vanilla. It's not perfect — assault rifles are nearly useless, maps get repetitive, and there are some lingering bugs — but for fans of the old-school XCOM formula, Xenonauts earns every one of its hours.

antiquated but fun
👍
Any fans of the original X-COM from the 90's, will absolutely LOVE this game!
Honorable and worthy successor of XCOM: UFO Defense. Well-balanced, simple, and challenging in all the right ways. Plenty of enemies to keep you on your toes, and most importantly, no Lobstermen or Cruise-liner levels like Terror from the Deep!
Incredibly fun and addictive to replay, especially modded!
