---See where this game landed on my Metroidvania Tier List beneath this rec!--- It's alright, it's more Metroidy Xanthiom. You can take screenshots of rooms which pin on the map. This is cool, but you have a limit for them which I quickly reached, forcing me to use the regular map pins as well. There are a few moments where it can be quite tricky to work out how to make progress. Missiles can interact with a lot more things than I would've assumed, and were the solution to getting un-stuck in a few places. There was also one really obtuse location where I needed to dash into a wall to make an icicle fall down. I had tried hitting the icicle with missiles and fire weapons, but the actual solution wasn't intuitive to me. You do get to do the crazy gun powerups like in Xanthiom Zero and you can melt some of those bosses with thousands of projectiles. There is something just delicious about the feeling of some of these guns. That said, personally I prefer a set of handmade guns than mixing and matching myself. The map/level design felt a bit mazey/constrictive for my liking but it was far from the ugliest cases I've encountered. This game and it's prequels all get the thumbs up from me. I don't love these games, but they've certainly been enjoyable to play through. -------------------------------- There isn't enough space in a Steam Rec to post my entire Tier List, so I cut off the bottom tiers and just left the games I liked. The Xanthiom series once again prides itself on Metroid-style exploration, with the main feature being able to customize your gun. This ranges from being able to spread bullets, shooting through walls, spatial firing, etc.; with the right amount of tweaks its possible to have an overpowered weapon that shoots up the entire room to a rapid-fire machinegun that melts bosses in seconds. There is also the ability to screenshot the room or an in-game note. Coupled with map markers and percentage completion per area makes it easy to do a lot of cleanup. This game relies on a fair amount of puzzles that you'll really need to stop, think, and observe. Sometimes its an element in the background, others its a passcode that's placed in a completely different room that your screenshot ability will come in handy for. My only biggest downside is that the first 30 minutes can feel pretty unrewarding, I mapped out an entire biome (sand caves) but I wasn't able to loot anything from it at that point. There's another area (jungle) where you get trapped in and need to find clues to get the powerup to escape, but because I went the wrong way I wasn't able to reach one of the clues without said powerup. The description of the game also mentions "Unfold an Engaging Story", but I had no idea what the hell was going on or what the final boss was even about... Xanthiom 2 also comes with a remake of Zero with altered graphics, reduced gravity, a different plot (independent from 2), and slight level design changes.
As a child, I tried to play Metroid. In my early teens, I read in a print magazine that you could blow up the Lower Brinstar glass tunnel. In my 40's, I can safely say that MathanGames understands what makes a great Metroidvania in the vein of the OG classics. The kind we all know, love, crave and fiend for.
Really, really great Metroidvania!
Emphasis on exploration and puzzles. Combat is satisfying without being annoying. The gun configurations and customizability are super awesome, so you can use what weapons fit your play style (i.e., scattershot vs. precision aiming). Bosses are just enough and well paced. Puzzles require some head-scratching, but that's a good thing. I'd rather it be challenging than utterly obvious. I'm old-school (I played the original Metroid when it came out. Yes. I'm old.) and this brought back thatsame feeling of exploration and enjoyment. Great job to the developer! Your put a lot of heart and soul in this this and it really shines!
Awesome! I only discovered the series a week ago, playing Xanthiom Zero before this came out. These games are up there in the continuation of the platformer-action-adventure genre along Zexion and Axiom Verge. Please continue making more games. I eagerly await what you do next as I keep playing the first two titles.
Do you also have fond memories of Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion, and Metroid Zero Mission? Then this is the one. They finally did it, people--a Metroidvania that actually pays good homage to Metroid--the art style, the level design, the soundtrack, the instrumental beam usage... it has everything. Yet, it does enough to set itself apart as something that is more than just a clone and expands on the concepts and choices from which it took inspiration. Man, this makes my 90s kid heart so happy.
REALLY good classic Metroid style game, heavy on environmental storytelling and light on exposition, lots of upgrades (some of which I didn't see coming, very nice) and a lot of ways to adjust your weapons. A lot of the difficulty is dependant on unlocking modifiers, since in the base game if you configure your gun in a couple different, specific, ways combat becomes a non-threat, like even the final bosses melt under the right setup. Plus it's TWO games in one!
Superb, worth the money, a real homage to old shcool (but easier TBH) metroids and NES-era games.
Very fun so far, very non-linear so far (good thing) Very responsive dev actively working on issues as people report them. I have only encountered one issue myself so they do not seem common. EDIT: still having a good time. And the issue I encountered was patched. Only one negative review (at time of writing) which is talking actual nonsense. There is no game restarting trap. If you love metroidvania games this is a must. Also comes with a re-make of the original Xanthiom which I also loved. Play this game.
A nice evolution of Xanthiom Zero's gameplay that gives Grisham some Super Metroid-esque style, with plenty of enhancements to make it feel great to explore in. Both game modes are quite enjoyable. I'm looking forward to a Side Scape 2 or Xanthiom 3.
