One of the best sandbox space games out
Mega gut
This is a great game, even with the awkward UI and auto pilot still not 100%. Having reached 350 hours I have finally got into terraforming, which is a pain although worthwhile. I skipped the last 3 dlc's so maybe I don't have the full experience yet it has been really fun so far. I kinda dread trying to find all of the vaults without using a guide but I'm gonna give it a go. The ability to replay the game so you can change the outcome of some quests is nice. Adding mods to your ships can really make a difference too. The 9.0 update has definitely changed things for the better.
If Kenshi and Elite Dangerous had a baby, this would be it. A genuine slog for CoD attention span players, probably best to leave them on Elite to have their dog fights. Jokes aside, best game to scratch the itch of economy control, space exploration and building. I foresee my 400 hours on Eilte to boost my enjoyment of this game. Here's to 1000 hours.
I have played this game for a long time now. I feel like this either one of those games you put hundreds of hours in or just ten and be frustrated with it. I want to focus in this review on combat mechanics as the remaining mechanics kind of came to me easier or were more self-explanatory. First off: To really enjoy and progress in this game you must be willing to do research on your own. To find out how concepts work. To even look in to forums, wiki's or some in-game information that explain features of the game. And yes, even a non-relevant sounding sentence in the in-game encyclopedia can be vital information on how something works. Combat can seem challenging at first when you use your small ill-equipped fighter and even later when you attack larger stations with your destroyers. This is because the game heavily favors good and especially well suited equipment. AI is sometimes dumber then you think. With higher skill personell it gets better but it doesn't fix some core problems the game still has. My advice for the beginning is: Take small fights to learn how to avoid being shot at it in staying close to the target. "Hatikvah's Choice I" has a gate to xenon territory. Sometime small fighers come through. Perfect place to pratice and farm items and not piss off any faction. Take fighters with good weaponry (don't buy the most expensive guns, look at projectile speed and range as well), good manoeuvrability and boost speed instead of good shields, hull or travel speed. Don't be afraid to "run away" and attack again. This is a core concept in the beginning. When you get comfortable you can try attacking higher sized ships, especially miners and traders as they aren't protected well except for their turrets which you can avoid being shot at by circling the ship and staying on one side of the ship. Keep upgrading your ships components and if you start with a fighter first go to heavy fighter. You don't need m-sized corvettes or frigates for a long time and most aren't good to fly yourself anyways. If you really want a good fast m-sized ship you can go for the terran katana but again I would always chose manoeuvrability over anything. One advice I want to give for later in the game is, that you should equip your destroyer's large turrets with plasma throwers. They do the most damage and are the best against large, slow moving or static targets. Paranid plasma turrets work the best. This took me way too long to figure out and I want to spare you the research. It really pushes a destroyer's firepower immensly. AI sometimes is very dumb. If you set destroyers to attack a station, some of them may fly in turret range of the station and get literally anhilated in seconds. There is no real way around this but I advice saving the game before doing large scale attacks. To minimize these suicide runs of destroyers set the turret configuration of every destroyer so that large turrets only attack capital ships (stations are included) and the small turrets to defend. Also get higher skill pilots and use the "Coordinate Attack" option. This is more of a fun project for me but I've also found it can be fun to have a lot of s-sized "bombers" with torpedo launchers on a large carrier. They can take out stations very quickly and you avoid you loosing L-sized ships. In summary: Try. Research. Try again.
X4 is an ambitious game mixing elements of grand strategy / empire building / logistics games, RTS combat, space shooter flight sims dogfights, and first person RPGs. This ambition comes with a cost, as it's probably not the best example of a game featuring any of those individual elements. However, it is probably the best example of trying to merge those kind of elements into an "everything" space game. If you're looking for something that digs deeper than No Man's Sky, doesn't require installing 1000 third party tools like Elite Dangerous (and with considerably less predatory monetization), or want an actual functioning game unlike Star Citizen, then give X4 a try.
If you like space games like Stellaris and Star Citizen then you will like this one , its like 2 good games rolled together.
535h of game play and still love it!
