I tried out XP12 as someone with several hundred hours on MSFS, mostly out of curiosity for how it would stack up. Overall I was pretty disappointed, and found it much less user friendly than MSFS. The controls are not great. Is a "toggle internal/external" keybind really that hard to include in a $60 sim? Same with combination button controls for controllers/joysticks--why are only keyboards allowed that advanced feature? The FMS/GPS on the couple included planes I tried also didn't impress me. More barebones than MSFS. No camera presets? Really? And why can't I zoom the view out further? Yes this is all whining over small stuff, but it adds up and just feels like a clunkier version of MSFS. People claim the flight model blows MSFS out of the water, but I didn't notice enough difference to stick around and put up with the jank. No, I'm not going to spend hours tweaking plugins and running out the refund clock to make your sim usable.
Yes, X-Plane 12 has its strong suits. It offers a unique opportunity to fly legendary classic aircraft like the Tu-154 and other complex, high-quality add-ons. The clouds here, by the way, are done pretty well too - they are not as bad as some reviews claim, and they deliver a decent visual experience. The only thing this simulator is genuinely great at is its pure physics and solid flight model. Another massive plus that completely destroys its competitors is the realistic crash and damage physics. If you hard-exceed G-limits or mess up a landing, the wings can actually rip off or the fuselage will bend, instead of just throwing a stupid "Game Over" screen at you.And before the comment section floods with "upgrade your PC" claims: don't even try to blame my hardware. The simulator was running on ultra graphics settings, pushing a native 30 FPS, and I easily added another 30 frames on top using third-party frame generation apps. So it’s not a hardware issue at all; it's the game itself. I spent a long time playing MSFS 2020 before this, and its out-of-the-box FPS was way higher than in XP12, which clearly speaks volumes about the "optimization" of Laminar Research's engine. But let's be honest: flight dynamics and crash physics are literally the only advantages XP12 has, and you can’t get very far on dry mathematics alone. In absolutely everything else, MSFS 2024 wins hands down. Playing X-Plane 12 without a ton of third-party mods is simply impossible nowadays. In its default out-of-the-box state, the game completely lacks the feeling of a living world - you sit in a sterile cockpit flying over entirely lifeless, gray textures. I honestly tried to fix this and installed a heap of graphics plug-ins and environment add-ons. Admittedly, after adding gigabytes of mods, the immersion improved and the game looked better, but you just can't save this engine with band-aids alone. The real "wow-effect" never happened, especially when looking at the competitor, which literally makes my mouth water.Ultimately, I made the final decision to switch to MSFS 2024. Straight out of the box, without any hassle or tweaking graphical mods, it is just miles better and offers a hundred times more features. Technology-wise, it's a massive generational leap that XP12 could only dream of. Yes, the default flight dynamics and cockpit feel there might fall short compared to X-Plane 12 in some aspects, but this minor drawback is easily and fully offset by third-party add-ons like FSRealistic. In return, the new platform delivers an unmatched level of immersion: you can physically walk out of the cockpit, do a pre-flight inspection on foot, check the flaps and landing gear, and truly feel the scale of the aircraft. The world around you no longer looks like a dead digital canvas - thanks to smart dynamic traffic, highly detailed global airports, and a massive, fully fleshed-out career mode with actual missions (ranging from medevac to commercial flights), the simulator turns into a real aviation life, rather than just dull and empty flights from a generic point A to point B.For me, a living, breathing planet, incredible cloud technologies available right after installation, and modern gameplay completely beat Laminar Research's outdated approach. Why spend hours digging through forums, downloading gigabytes of plug-ins, and trying to bring something dead to life when the competitor is vastly superior in every other aspect and provides a true piloting experience in a living world right here and now? X-Plane 12 keeps its physics, crashes, and a loyal niche audience, but globally, this simulator is hopelessly stuck in the past and can no longer compete for a modern gamer's time and attention. While I wait to purchase MSFS 2024 tomorrow, I'll still spend this evening flying in XP12 to scratch that aviation itch, but my final judgment on this game has already been passed. XP12 requires $120–160 in graphics mods and still lacks a living world, whereas MSFS 2024 is cheaper and its physics can be easily perfected with free community-made aircraft models, leaving XP12 ahead only in spin simulation. 100% worth it.
It is such a tragedy that XP12 doesn't have the market share it deserves. This is the only true "Flight Simulator" I have seen on the market. I've stacked over 1,000 hours on the Microsoft Flight Simulator series (including FSX), and having switched to XPlane, I have no idea how I didn't make this decision earlier. It feels so real in ways that MSFS can not recreate. The most notable thing is the physics engine. It feels like you're actually controlling a heavy aircraft instead of a paper airplane. Before anyone says "you didn't use the high fidel physics engines" - when I played MSFS, I only flew with Fenix, PMDG, etc.. This is by far the Gold Standard. I hope X-Plane can soon receive the large-scale attention it deserves. Laminar did a remarkable job with this.
I think that this is better than mfs2024 in many ways but its not good on its own youd need to add mods to really make the game complete. I hope that the devs can bring things like multiplayer and just expand the game because there is so much potential with this flight simulator that is unsused. Devs please add something like career mode like in msf2024..
I'm on Linux. I like how that sim behaves natively.
