At first, Wytchwood leaves a good impression with its beautiful art and fable setting. However, the shortcomings of its level design and crafting system become evident 2 or 3 hours in. About the level design: the game consists of 12 independent levels (fables); each one is just a linear sequence of fetch quests: fetch (or craft) something X from somewhere Y for somebody Z. And that's all! There is zero puzzle or problem solving: almost every single time, you are told explicitly what materials you need, whom you should talk to, where you must go. Although maps (there are 8 major locations) unlock progressively with the hope to give you a sense of broader and broader exploration, one cannot help feeling that these maps are just a reskin of each other, since they offer absolutely no variety in gameplay. The plain, simple, and predictable story of each fable does not help, either. About the crafting system: during the fetch quests, you automatically unlock the recipes for the objects involved. In particular, you never have to guess or design how to craft an item. The biggest issue of the system is the following. Later recipes often involve items crafted using earlier recipes, which creates a longer and longer chain of dependency up to the raw materials which can be gathered without any crafting. This makes the gameplay unbearably repetitive in the second half of the game: to craft one mission-related item, you may need to revisit several other locations to obtain some rare ingredients which can only be obtained by using other crafted items, which themselves may require more backtracking to get some other rare ingredients elsewhere… You get the idea now. Due to such a design, the levels are stretched into longer and more tedious backtracking and farming, although the amount of fetch quests remains more or less the same. Not to mention that the recipes themselves do not make much sense even lore-wise. In short, Wytchwood is not bad as a cozy game. But you are looking for deep stories or game design, or interesting mechanics, Wytchwood can offer none.
Gameplay is repetitive where you explore and gather materials to craft, but the very beautiful art style and the storyline make it worth your time. There are fast travel points so going back and fro to collect things is pretty manageable, but if you like looting things everywhere you go, you would already have most of the ingredients in your satchel when the time comes to craft quest items (such is my case). A fun game, thumbs up!
A fairy tale game for grown-ups. I really like the hand-drawn, story-book aesthetic of the game and its full of Gothic fairy-tale references that make the world really fun to explore. You'll like this game if you like fetch-quests and travelling all around the map looking for specific ingredients to fulfil the quest lines.
For people like me who loot everything in games becasue MAYBE you might need all that stuff. This fun, little collectathon basically expects you to be a hoarder and rewards you for it. Very well done, sticks to what it promises and is charming throughout. So if you know and understand what the game is built around and that sounds appealing, you will likely enjoy this.
I feel like this game was designed for me personally and by extension, every gothy, witchy girl whose favorite part about playing TES: Skyrim was running around & collecting crafting reagents. There are some extremely basic, limited combat elements to obtain certain ingredients but combat is not what this game is about. Darkly comedic with attractive animation, I have enjoyed traipsing about the world meeting characters and crafting ever more elaborate recipes. My one complaint is that the controls are not as intuitive as I'd have liked and it took me the first hour to really get the hang of how to best use my mouse. That minor frustration is overcome by how much I've otherwise enjoyed the gameplay.
Such a charming gothic fairytale type of game! Beautiful music and art style, witty dialogue. I definitely recommend this game, if you like exploring, running around, collecting things, admiring scenery, crafting, and just want to feel like a little goblin. However, if you want to play a linear story, from A to B to C, and want to binge it - you will not enjoy it, because this game will have you going all around the map to collect specific things. And I think that's the point and beauty of this game.
Cozy witchy game where you gather stuff and do little quests
I really enjoyed the storyline and loved the art style. However, if you get frustrated having to run back and forth to collect items to make something in order to make something else, then this game is probably not for you.
